A trio of divers slipped into the waters of Hemlock Cove, a bay off a stretch of Oak Beach where some of the human remains have been found.

The divers were using measuring tape and technical gear to help with their underwater survey and divers flags on the water measure their progress.

Bless you.

So from google maps, I can see a walkway down to Hemlock Cove. Looking now to see if there's a boat dock or something. There's some reason LE is searching there.

These pressers are often such a let down.

This case is crazy, and very overwhelming.

Is there a succinct time line and breakdown of all the known factual events, with corresponding geographical locations?

That needs to be done, IMO.

Hopefully the milky white plastic that the bones were found in, will provide a clue.

So, someone is thinking the newest remains found, could be victims of Joel Rifken?

Madness.

Again, I will say, that this SK may have thought that, statistically speaking, the best possible location to put his victims remains, would be an area that had already been used as a dumping ground by another SK.

What would be the odds of TWO SK's operating in the same place, kwim?

Does anyone know precisely where JR put the remains of his victims?

Latest Remains Found on N.Y. Beach Could be Victims of Another Long Island Serial Killer

The latest sets of human remains found near a remote New York Beach are too old to be tied to the killings of four online escorts and may be the victims of another notorious Long Island serial killer, the New York Post reports.

An unnamed source told the New York Post that the remains -- reportedly a torso and human skull -- could be victims of convicted serial killer Joel Rifkin, who confessed in 1993 to killing 17 prostitutes and is serving a life sentence in upstate New York. Rifkin was convicted in nine of the deaths, but three of his victims were never found.

So the last person to see Shannan that night (Does he mean in the early morning hours? I believe so.) is the doc.

Therefore, he must have called LE if he did not take her in to his home for treatment because as both a former police surgeon and former head of Suffolk EMS, he would instinctively know that Shannan would likely be in need of some attention: a young female stranger in the gated community running around in the early morning hours near the beach (as seen through the eyes of a former LE-related, physician-related and EMS related mature, intelligent and experienced man.).

So bottom line is Shannan's mother says someone who identified himself as the doc called her the day after SG vanished. The family had not officially reported her missing to NJ authorities yet.

The doc says he that he did see Shannan running that night near Oak Beach, but he denies calling SG's mom.

Gilbert was last seen near Dr. Hackett's home last May. Gilbert's mother says she received a strange phone call from him the day after her daughter disappeared.

"He called me on the phone. He said he had a halfway house and that Shannon was there," she said. "She wanted to be off the streets and he was trying to help her."

Dr. Hackett denies calling Gilbert's mother, and police have not named any suspects in the case so far.

It looks like abc's take is a bit different than the original article about Dr Hackett seeing Shannan. Nothing was mentioned about near his home but that he was the last one to see her.

PLUS from what Sherre {Shannan's sister who was interviewed} said, Dr Hackett did not actually say he didn't call the mother but rather that he never told her mother Shannan had spent the night at his home.

:banghead: Darn media get you comin' and a goin' in almost every case it seems

This is the question I posed before... I don't buy "just in the area where the remains were found" -- like the Mountain_Kat said "why not just search the whole bay". It's got to be a lead from someone!

This cove is packed with boats in the summer (see my earlier post you can see pics on the Hemlock Cove FB page) I've driven by it many times myself a very popular place to "float and tie-up with other boats", lots of boats coming and going could easily bury something sitting in the sand below very quickly.

OK...I admit I am new to this thread and am trying to catch up on everything, but this doctor...something is not quite right about him. It almost seems as if he called the mother the next day to try to cover his tracks somehow. I need to read everything about it, but it sure seems like this guy somehow is the key. But, what do I know?

Hackett said he saw Gilbert running at night near Oak Beach, looking both sick and distressed.

How could anyone tell if someone looks sick and distressed while running and at nightime when it's dark?
He would have to be super close!

I have to say, Doc certainly does seem to fit the profile of who I imagine our SK to be. Quiet, fatherly, almost meek. Pillar of the community type, who straddles 2 worlds and is adamant that they never overlap.

Anyone know if he's married?

Thank you, that's the first I've heard of PH admitting to having seen SG.

Of course, now I'm more confused than ever. He saw her running near Oak beach...at night? Looking sick and depressed? Odd choice of words. She's running, but not frantic or fearful...no, sick. And depressed. Okee-dokey.

And this was near Oak Beach? Not on his street or in his gated community? So he was down at Oak beach at 4 or 5 am? What was he doing down there? Boating? Fishing? Cruising for victims? (sorry...but seriously...wth?)

Was this supposed to be in the early morning hours, after SG fled JB's house...or is his talking about later that night? If so, why on earth was she running then? Why didn't she just call someone to come get her that day or that evening?

I'm beyond perplexed. Not even sure WHAT to make of this article (assuming it isn't just bad reporting). :waitasec:

If SG ran out of JB's house at around 5, as has been reported, there wasn't any "later that night" to talk about. It was already early morning. PH might well have been out for an early morning walk -- birding, fishing, clamming, taking sunrise photos, or just walking.

I expect bad reporting plays into it, but it's probably also LE releasing incomplete information.

OK so what I got from the press conference that wasn't stated but can be assumed is that this investigation is with at least another county. They will be meeting with them. My guess to compare notes to see if this is indeed the same killer or it is already deemed to be the same killer and they are going to meet to see what each dept. has and decide on pulling what resources from both sides. FBI is still on this case, which also tells me they do indeed have a serial killer. Not only that but if they are continually on this case then I can assume that more than 4 bodies are tied to one person. All of course my own opinion.

Columbo, I didn't mean to sound as tho I was minimalizing your comment at all :)
My impression is that women in the escort biz are not taken seriously, harrassed, and don't feel they can fight back against the stigma that goes with escorting. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this poster knows something and is afraid for the reason stated in her post!

Many of us sleuths have questioned the LEO and his dog Blue who made the first find.

I am questioning if he is actually the 'good guy' who heard rumblings inside the agency and blew the case wide open when he went out to train his dog that DEC. day.

Poor Shannan, many people saw her that night who said they were callling 911 and she ran.

Didn't anyone try and console her in her frantic state by offering a cold wet cloth for her face, invite her inside to calm her down, get the details of her plight?

Glad to read you again Columbo!

wm

No problem, waltzingmatilda, I didn't think you were minimalizing my comment at all-- I appreciated your input.

I also was wondering if the LEO who discovered remains with his dog were somehow involved but I guess that's been disproved.

The whole bit about Shannan running and freaking out has me mystified. Right--why didn't someone try to help her? I guess someday we may find out the whole story there.

Thanks again, waltzingmatilda!

I believe in Sherre's radio interview, she indicates that when she and her sis spoke to the doc in LI, he said that he did not recall (If true, weak word choice.) making any call to her mom. On her FB page, her post re the doc states that he denied it..., but I feel her wording needs more clarification. It could be open to interpretation.

What comment are you referring to Columbo where Shannan's name was spelled wrong ? Thanks

scandi, She's referring to an article I posted from the NY Daily News today that had a comment from a person named "Shanan" that was kind of scary--she said something about being able to help with this case. It was post #38 in this thread and here's the link to the article...the comment by "Shanan" may not be the first one . She commented at 10:54 a.m. I'd copy and paste her comment but I think it's prohibited (?)

It wasn't nighttime by then. Sunrise on May 1, 2010, was at 5:54 a.m. If SG first left JB's house around 5, as has been reported, it would have been starting to get light already and could have been quite light by the time she reached his house.

I used this calculator: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=179&month=5&year=2010&obj=sun&afl=-11&day=1
