Did you ever go to the OBI, Penelope? Good times! Very sad to see it go when it did.

No, I never went to OBI -- I grew up in Valley Stream and lived in Rockville Centre and I partied closer to home. My dad used to work summers at the Jones Beach Police Barracks and when we were kids he would drop us off at Field 2 in the morning and pick us up when work was over. In those days (the late 60s), we were safe there as long as my older brother and sister were with us.

The area is beautiful-- the beaches are some of the best in the world. But, because it is an ecologically protected area, it is very desolate at night and during the colder months. It is sad to think that the bodies of woman have been laying out there, exposed to the elements. Very upsetting -- and so close to an area that brings back pleasant memories of an innocent childhood.(

We called it OBI East because there was a club called OBI West which was in Island Park. I did go there only a couple of times, my brother hung out there so.... But I went there for Sunday brunch. Yes very sad when they closed it down.

Where were the bodies found, do yo know? Was it east of there but on the bay side? Or were the bodies found on the north side but in the direction of Robert Moses State Park?

The most recent body was dumped there about 1 month ago, according to Nancy Grace show. The area was about 3 miles from where the 911 call was made. The area is very sandy with much brush. The brush had died off making the bodies easier to find.

Anyone know any women reported missing in the last month in this area?

Would the burlap be used in making sandbags?

According to the experts on Nancy Grace, the burlap bags may be connected to the fishing boats in the area, or landscapers. I don't think bags used to make sandbags are large enough for bodies as they would then be very difficult to lift and place. Also, IMO, when there is a hurricane or storm in the area around the Atlantic, sandbags would be of little use! When that area floods... it floods big time.

Burlap bags
  • New 25 lb., 50 lb. and 100 lb.
  • Typical uses: Chestnuts, Potatoes, Onion sets, Corn, Sand, and more.

I think the women could have been from a pretty big area, LI/NY/NJ...and this spot may be convenient to where the killer lives or works. And since there are probably hundreds of missing women in the metro area, it may take a while to ID them. Look back to Joel whats-his-name, the serial killer in the 80/early 90's, he was getting the girls in the city but didn't he dump them any old place? One I think even near/in his parents house?

NY Newsday has a map that shows the location of the bodies. You can zoom in and out to get a better idea of where they were found in relation to the area. According to Newsday, they were found between Gilgo Beach and Cedar Beach on the north side (bay side), not on the Atlantic side.

I hope this helps!

Here are links to a few Long Island stories that could be connected. Even though it is a wild thought that a serial killer is moving from location to location (Long Island/Atlantic City/Myrtle Beach/Orlando/Wilmington NC) it is very much likely that the suspect is a Long Island person who is comfortable in the area. It is probably even more scary that there are numerous serial killers praying on women floating around.

I think serial killers move all the time that why they are hard to catch.

I felt for a long time they been a couple killers moving up and down the east coast. Really scary!

wow good find!! but I still got goose bumps...

In addition to Megan Waterman, who was definitly a Craigs List Sex worker, Carrie Ann Monroe of Berlin Conn. disappeared Jan 20 2010. There is no indication that she was a working girl but she lived in a motel with a shady Boy Friends and her parents were in the dark as to her activities in the weeks leading up to he disappearance.

Jennifer Poole lived in and disappeared right from Islip on April 29, 2010. There is no indication that she was a Sex worker but there is no indication of work either and she lived alone apparently.

Shannon Gilbert, who investigators were looking for when these remains were found, was definitly a Craigs List Sex worker but her case is a little strange. The The "client" has been cleared and she apparently had some kind of "breakdown" While she was at his house. apparently the last contact anyone had with her was when she was running through the streets of Fire Island talking to a "911" operator claiming someone was after her.

Tamika Howard and Danielle Ravert were both from NJ. They both had histories of Street level prostitution and Drug use but neither seemed "classy" enough to do a Craigs List business.

Michael Taus is an "atypical" missing person. There may have been more going on in his life than his parents knew or reported and it is not clear that his disappearance ocurred during his mystery "date". His dog and the dog's water and food bowls were missing from his apartment. I doubt he took his dog with him on a date. Sounds more like he was going away for a while. Someone had his care for six days after he was last seen.

The streach of road was obviously a good "dumping ground" and it is possible that two or more killers used it, but not very likely. If this is a Serial Killer, the victims probably follow a pretty clear pattern. I would expect them to all be Sex workers who either plyed their business in the area or were willing to travel through a Craig List ad.

Yikes! That sure seems like a lot of unidentified human remains turning up on Long Island! They sound like different MOs, but the headless and hand-less torsos are pretty bizarre and awful (and sound rather similar). The girl who was identified through her tattoo sounded more like some of these other missing prostitutes (in terms of age, etc.), but I guess we don't know yet who these 4 new women are. I sure hope they are able to identify them!

ETA: I'm assuming the 4 bodies are female, but I realize they have not all been identified as such yet.

This is starting to sound like the work of a serial killer - especially if LE is thinking there's more bodies.

I hope they can all be ID'd & that there's someone to care about their remains.

I did not read the entire thread, but I immediately started to think Mafia. because we know that they did bury their bodies in remote areas on Long Island and NJ.
I am from the east coast and here it is not a secret.

Read thru the NG transcript, and if her info is correct, there wasn't an "official" search going on initially.

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Breaking news tonight. An off-duty cop walking his dog on a beautiful, remote and isolated beach stumbles upon a woman`s dead body, that beach now turned burial ground. Within 48 hours, three more sets of female remains discovered.
........................
RUPA MIKKILINENI, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER
Now, the first one was found because a police officer with his K9 dog, cadaver dog, was just searching the beach, doing a routine training. And originally, he was searching for a young woman that went missing in this area last May from the New Jersey area. So then he found the skeletonized body just here right behind me, just five to eight feet away from the highway right here, Nancy, just dumped.

And once he found the skeletonized body, then they sent police back again on Monday and did a search of the entire area. And within a quarter of a mile area, they found three more bodies. Now, three of these bodies are confirmed to be female, Nancy. They have not been identified, but we know three bodies are female. And two of them, the two that were -- of the three found on Monday, were found in a burlap sack. That`s right, Nancy, a burlap sack.
