A New York prison has prevented an escape involving 64 bed sheets in the course of conducting a lengthy investigation into contraband smuggling. Police also uncovered a corrupt “shopping network” deeply embedded in the facility.

The convict suspected of planning the escape, Ernest Murphy, fell victim to a cell inspection that took place after prison authorities dismantled a drug ring being run inside.*

Apparentley the Correctional Officer that was suspended friday has not been to work since the escape.

Also there were about 4 or more Officers that switched posts and they were also seen in the unit that the escapees were being housed in at times when they were not assigned to that unit.

Do you know the county where the search is centered now?

Edited to add: looks like Steuben County.

Locations of possible sightings, heading south towards Pennsylvania.

A person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the continuing inquiry said investigators were focused on as many as four corrections officers who either had switched their posts in the months before the escape or had often been seen at night around the cellblock where the two men were housed. Among other documents, the officers’ bank and phone records were being examined.

Why wait 4 days to tell everyone they were sighted on the NY state/PA border? guess they need more proof.

Investigators conducting interviews about sightings. Surveillance video being analyzed. Asking residents along NY-PA border to be on alert.

Oh. That's great. I can throw a baseball from here and have it land in the other one. Dandy. I was wondering why all the helicopter fly overs yesterday. But it was a little red and white copter not state police.. hm

oh it's been days? Okay I'm behind on this new info. Stuff always comes out when the east coast is sleeping even when this is where it's going down! hm. It may be time for me to hit up the scanner thread. I'm hoping this situation has it's own by now rather than piggybacking on the "current scanner alerts" thread...but if not that's cool too. I'm just rambling becuase I"ve had NO coffee yet today. Not sure I've ever posted here prior to my first sip. This is a landmark day already! :coffee:

Our NY State Prisons are a joke. Criminals watching over the criminals.

twcnews - state police are investigating two possible sightings in Steuben county in Lindley, walking towards the border. Surveillance footage turned out ot be inconclusive. A CO was put on administrative leave last night but there is no info given about identity or participation in escape. Meanwhile they're checking trails and vacant homes. They're not giving many details about the investigation so the men don't get too much info to go on. COs say the cells and tunnels have been repaired. Lockdown was also lifted this week.

(that was what the anchor was just saying, 6:30am newscast on TWCNews.com)

Oh it hasn't been four days.

"Authorities said witnesses saw the two men on June 13 walking near the Gang Millsrail yard on Rita's Way. Two men with the same description were also seen the next day walking along County Route 115 in the town of Lindley, heading toward Pennsylvania."

It's actually been an entire freaking week. THANKS FOR TELLING US SO WE COULD BE VIGILANT. wtf

Two men fitting the description of inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt were seen a week ago in Steuben County, New York, over 300 miles southwest of the prison in Dannemora, according to a State Police news release posted late Friday. Two men were seen walking near a rail yard in Erwin on June 13, and then seen the next day in Lindley, New York, heading toward the Pennsylvania border.

Took me till now (and a full cup of coffee later) to realize that this is what they meant when LE said they're now going to turn to investigating tips. Chances are that they realized they had two independant reports of two independant sightings of two guys fitting the convicts' description both in the same area of NY/PA there in Steuben county and decided to follow up on that lead now. I'm glad they're following up on tips. I just don't know why it took so long. Someone from LE called me back about a couple of tips the day after I submitted them. Why wouldn't they do the same with possible sightings? Well, regardless, all I care right now is that these guys don't hurt anyone else.

from your link -

"Investigators conducted interviews in both communities and have surveillance video that was initially deemed inconclusive and is being sent to Albany for analysis.

It was not clear why authorities waited a week before divulging the information."

I hope the surveillance video turns out to be useful after all.
