I wanted to quote, but not able to today, but GGE, I think I agree with you that Sweat is not as dangerous as Matt. His mother mentioned that he had violent tendencies as a youth, but she didn't elaborate -- so...that could mean that he was prone to getting into schoolyard fights...or it could mean that he tortured the family cat or was physically abusive to family members. However, physical violence was never (to my knowledge) part of his life of crime up until the point that he shot the police officer. Most of his crimes involved stealing guns and vehicles. He shot the police officer in a panic, and didn't actually kill the officer -- and did express remorse to the officer at the scene (before his buddy fired the kill shots). Granted, he did tell people that he would shoot cops rather than go back to prison. But all of this was back in 2002 or earlier. The past 13 years he's spent in prison, where he was known as being quiet, reserved, but friendly, well-spoken, professional in his supervisor position (well, except for ducking into the closet with Tillie).
Another thing, he may not necessarily be all that desperate. The autopsy of Matt indicated he was well-fed, clean (apparently had showered and shaved in the past 3 weeks) and aside from a few bug bites on lower extremities, apparently some diarrhea, and some scrapes and scratches (and of course the 3 bullet holes in his head) - not in bad shape.
