Jessica - oh good she is spending her 40th birthday in jail - Date of Birth: 06-14-1979

Re bold in the docket -
Wondering what Plead W G means?

Anyone?

Late to the thread, but a "W G plea" simply means..... waiver/guilty, meaning he signed a waiver pleading guilty and did not have to appear. Nice to read ya'. This case is so sickening. WTH is wrong with people??? :(:(:(

On the court site it has only 3 counts against Jessica. They are kidnapping, abduction & interference with custody. And of course nothing has been updated there since 6/18/19.

Oh - so Daniel plead guilty??!! Interesting. And she's going with insanity plea.

Strange - I just looked at Daniel's court stuff - and he is only charged with kidnapping, abduction & interference with custody - ?? Wondering if they got moved to "another" court? And nothing updated here either since 6/18/19.

Jessica Groves pleads not guilty by reason of insanity
Dylan Groves’ parents due in court Aug.1

JULY 22, 2019

"On July 11, Jessica Groves, 39, through her attorney, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in relation to the death of her infant son, Dylan Groves.

On July 16, Scioto County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Kuhn signed an order directing an evaluation of the defendant’s sanity at the time of the offense and her competency to stand trial.

In the meantime, the court required the defendant enter a written plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Jessica Groves must complete that filing no later than seven days from the day of the order, which makes the deadline July 23.

According to the Daily Times reading of Ohio Revised Code, the court now must hold a special hearing to determine the defendant’s sanity or competency to stand trial. As the court ordered a mental evaluation of the defendant, the law mandates a hearing within 10 days after the filing with the court of the evaluation....

Jessica Groves and husband Daniel Groves, 42, are co-defendants in the case involving the death of their son. The Daily Times previously reported both were due in court July 25 for a pretrial hearing in their joint case. That hearing currently is not listed on the website of the Court of Common Pleas. Instead, the website notes a date of Aug. 1 as a date for pretrial for both defendants.

A final pretrial still is set for Sept. 27, with a four-day jury trial scheduled to begin Oct. 15 as previously announced. It is unclear how Jessica Groves’ insanity plea may affect the court schedule. The Common Pleas’ website lists the same court dates for Daniel Groves as for Jessica Groves. Both previously entered pleas of not guilty to all counts against them, including one count each of aggravated murder.

Both suspects formally waived their rights to a speedy trial and both suspects also are in the Scioto County Jail with no chance of bail....

Initially, both Daniel and Jessica Groves faced a total of 11 criminal counts. According to the court website, one count of interfering with custody filed against each of the suspects was dismissed at the request of Tieman’s office. The reason for that dismissal is not given."

And I have in my notes that Daniel Groves signed waiver pleading guilty (6/21/19).

Going to court site now to "see" what they have. :)

Ah - I found where he plead guilty - but NOT to murder charges....

Also in court Thursday, the judge addressed a motion to revoke Daniel's probation. He was on probation for a theft charge, and committing new crimes violates his probation. The judge asked Daniel if he wanted to admit to the violations and waive his right to a hearing, or deny the violations and require the state to provide evidence that shows probable cause that he violated his probation (#CRB1801504: 01/15/2019: Defendant plead no contest, found guilty, fined $100, suspended. Costs: $120, suspended, Jail: 30 days, suspended.

Dylan Groves’ parents in court for murder case pretrial
Officials awaiting evaluation of Jessica Groves’ mental status

August 1, 2019

"The parents of two-month-old Dylan Groves were in court for an arraignment/pretrial hearing Thursday morning in which what didn’t happen may be most notable.

On July 11, Jessica Groves, 39, through her attorney, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in relation to the death of her son, who, authorities say they found deceased at the bottom of a 30 foot well in Otway.

On Thursday, Groves court-appointed attorney Shawn Stratton told Scioto County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Kuhn a mental evaluation for his client is pending. He said the person handling that evaluation is on vacation and he was unclear when an evaluation will happen...

After the brief hearing of about 15 minutes, Tieman told the Daily Times more serious cases such as the Groves case usually become assigned to a senior mental health specialist. Scioto County uses a Cincinnati firm for their mental evaluations....

During the hearing, Tieman informed the court he is still awaiting the final autopsy results on Dylan Groves from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, which handles autopsies for Scioto County. A preliminary autopsy report, completed by Montgomery County but available for viewing at the Scioto County Coroner’s Office, refers to “a decomposed approximately two-month-old infant.”

Most media reports give Dylan’s age as six months. However, that appears to be the age Dylan would have been at the time authorities discovered his body.

Dylan’s date of birth was Jan. 10. No cause of death or an exact date of death have been made public....

Both Jessica Groves and husband Daniel Groves, 42, face aggravated murder charges in the death of their son. Thursday’s hearing, in addition to being a pretrial on those charges, also introduced numerous charges of receiving stolen property against both of the Groves....

Both defendants currently are being held in the Scioto County Jail on the murder charges without chance of making bail. In regard to the receiving stolen property charges added Thursday, Kuhn put in place a $10,000 cash surety bond for each defendant.

Kuhn set Aug. 28 as the next pretrial date for all charges against the Groves. As was reported previously, Kuhn scheduled a final pretrial in the cases for Sept. 27 with a jury trial set for Oct. 18.

On Thursday, Kuhn said one issue still needing decided is whether or not the trial will continue with the Groves as co-defendants. Kuhn did not say what might motivate holding separate trials for each defendant, but from his comments that is a possibility...."

7/22/19 Update: Jessica arraignment: plead not guilty by reason of insanity. The Courts are now mandated to hold a special hearing now to determine if Jessica Groves is competent to stand trial. Even if she is found to have mental health issues that would not expunge her of the crimes against her young son.
8/1/19 Update: Jessica will undergo mental competency test. New charges of receiving stolen property charges added Thursday, Kuhn put in place a $10,000 cash surety bond for each defendant. UPDATE | Parents of baby found dead in well plead not guilty

6/17/19

"SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ & AP) --
The parents of a 6-month-old boy found dead last week in an Ohio well pleaded not guilty Monday to all charges including aggravated murder, our crew at the scene reports.

More disturbing details were released in the death of Dylan Groves. According to a preliminary autopsy, he suffered skull fractures on both sides of his skull, a fractured left arm (broken radius, humerus and ulna), a left leg fracture, two broken left ribs, soft tissue hemorrhaging in his right chest wall and a laceration to his left arm....

Among other charges the couple faces are kidnapping and corpse abuse. As mentioned, they pleaded not guilty to those and the aggravated murder charge. The couple was arraigned before Judge Mark Kuhn in Scioto County Common Pleas Court.

Assistant Prosecutor Julie Cook-Hutchinson says initial evidence indicates that Jessica Groves is the principal offender in the case. She was visibly upset throughout the hearing.

No bond was set for either suspect...."

Competency hearing set for Jessica Groves

AUGUST 28, 2019

"Portsmouth-A competency hearing has been set for one of the two suspects charged in the death of an infant earlier this year.

Jessica Groves and her husband, Daniel Groves were in court Wednesday morning before Common Pleas Court Judge Mark Kuhn for a pretrial hearing.

Local attorney Shawn Stratton, representing Jessica Groves, filed a motion last month for a competency evaluation on his client. The results have been sent to the court as well as attorneys in the case. Kuhn set Sept. 11 for the hearing on whether Groves will be found competent to stand trial. The Groves are set, for now, to have a four day jury trial beginning Oct. 15, however that could change depending on what the hearing concludes on Sept. 11.

Both Stratton, as well as Christine Scott, who represents Daniel Groves, showed concern in the pretrial hearing about the time they will be allotted to view the final autopsy result which has not been released by the Montgomery County Coroner’s office. They stated a motion to continue might be necessary. If that is the case, the Oct. 15 date will be moved to a later date by Kuhn if he deems necessary...."

Jessica Groves competency hearing set for Tuesday

SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

"...An autopsy of Dylan’s body, including a cause of death, still has not been made public.

Dylan Groves’ parents both now stand accused of aggravated murder. On July 11, Dylan’s mother Jessica Groves, 39, through attorney Shawn Stratton, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Daniel Groves, 42, also pleaded not guilty to the murder charge against him, although he did not plead insanity.

During a pretrial hearing in August, Stratton requested a mental competency evaluation for Jessica Groves. Scioto County Court Of Common Pleas Judge Mark Kuhn set a competency hearing for earlier this month on Sept. 11, but apparently the psychiatrist completing the mental evaluation was unavailable and Kuhn granted a request to delay the hearing.

According to the Court of Common Pleas website, the court rescheduled Jessica Groves’ competency hearing for 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. While he is not listed on the court website as the prosecuting attorney on the case, Scioto County Prosecutor Shane Tieman stated the hearing should be open to the public....

Scioto County officials are treating Jessica and Daniel Groves as co-defendants....

...What’s advertised as a final pretrial in the cases against both defendants is set for Sept. 27. However, what defendants are included in that pretrial as well as whether it takes place at all likely depends on the outcome of Tuesday’s sanity hearing for Jessica Groves.

It is not clear if Kuhn immediately will rule on Jessica Groves’ mental capacity to stand trial during the competency hearing or whether a decision will come later. Kuhn scheduled a four-day jury trial for both defendants beginning Oct. 15. Whether or not the trial begins for both defendants almost certainly depends on the outcome of the competency hearing for Jessica Groves...."

Groves is competent to stand trial for son’s murder

SEPTEMBER 24, 2019

"While awaiting the start of what was supposed to have been a hearing Tuesday to determine her mental competency to stand trial, murder suspect Jessica Groves sat silent, wearing handcuffs and leg restraints, continuously tapping her right heel. Her gaze seemed locked unmoving on a far corner of the courtroom.

Groves began to cry when defense attorney Robert Sratton entered the courtroom after meeting behind closed doors with prosecutors and Scioto County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Kuhn.

Even prior to the hearing, county Prosecutor Shane Tieman reported a court-appointed criminal psychologist had found Groves competent to stand trial in the aggravated murder case involving her infant son, Dylan.

During the subsequent hearing presided over by Kuhn, Stratton stipulated to the findings of the psychiatrist and on behalf of his client, withdrew her plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Stratton instead entered a standard plea of not guilty to the murder charge against Groves, as well as charges of receiving stolen property....

Kuhn entered the results of Jessica Groves’ psychiatric evaluation as an exhibit in the case but placed that evidence under seal, meaning it is not viewable by the public or media.

Prosecutors are treating Daniel and Jessica Groves as co-defendants in regard to all of the charges against the couple. Kuhn initially scheduled a four-day jury trial beginning Oct. 15. After a closed-door conference between Kuhn and attorneys for both sides, Tieman said a five-day jury trial now is set for Jan. 6, 2020...."

Can we not even establish how old this little boy actually was?
Foster mom says she got him after his birth in January, which would have made him no more than 3 months old on March 31.
He was initially reported as 4 months old.
Now I'm seeing 6 months old (which is about how old he'd be if he lived and was born in January.)
I mean come on people!

Please please someone tell me that a lot of those fractures were after death, when he was put into the well.

Why do you fight to get the kid back just to do this to them.

and this one says 2 months!
