"The county and state payed a lot of money (was it $10,000?) for a consultant to organize all the evidence for the defense attorneys."

The pre-trial hearing centered on the issue of discovery, with the defense calling for the appointment of a
discovery coordinator. The
coordinator would compare the evidence the state has against what the defense has, and vice versa, and make sure each side is properly prepared for the trial.
According to the defense, the
coordinator would also compare what discovery evidence the other three defendants in the case have and make sure all sides have the same evidence.
The judge set a Jan. 31, 2020, deadline for the defense to present a motion to the court about the appointment of a
discovery coordinator, with a Feb. 11, 2020, pre-trial date set for the judge to rule on the motion.

The Court further notes, however, that the defense apparently has served the State of Ohio with a motion requesting the appointment of a CDA, because on February 10, 2020, the State of Ohio filed a "Response To Defendants' Motion For Order Appointing Coordinating Discovery Attorney."
The Court is informed that as of the time of the pre-trial hearing on this day, discovery is not yet complete, and that the State of Ohio intends to provide additional discovery to the Defendant on February 13, 2020.
The Court notes that, although it has been suggested by counsel for the Defendant that the appointment of a coordinating discovery attorney, or "CDA," in this action may be needed, in order to assist the parties by ensuring that full discovery is provided and in helping the Defendant and State of Ohio organize the discovery material for effective pre-trial study and presentation at trial, the Defendant had not filed a motion in this action requesting the appointment of a CDA as of the time of the pre-trial hearing this day.
The Court further notes, however, that the defense apparently has served the State of Ohio with a motion requesting the appointment of a CDA, because on February 10, 2020, the State of Ohio filed a "Response To Defendants' Motion For Order Appointing Coordinating Discovery Attorney."The Court will continue to consider whether the employment of a CDA is necessary.
The Court notes that a meeting of counsel concerning discovery has been scheduled and that counsel is also exploring the feasibility of providing a searchable data base to assist with organizing and accessing items of discovery.
Counsel for the parties have indicated to the Court that a meeting between counsel for the State of Ohio and counsel for the Defendant has been scheduled for March 13, 2020, at the offices of Ohio BCI&I, for counsel to peruse the items of discovery and for counsel for the State of Ohio to provide some assistance to the Defendant's attorneys in organizing the items of discovery provided.
The State of Ohio, through Special Prosecuting Attorney Canepa, indicated to the Court that it is the State of Ohio's intention to have completed the provision of discovery to the Defendant at or prior to the time of the meeting of counsel on March 13, 2020.
