Authorities are trying to determine whether the suspect in an Ashland kidnapping and homicide was involved in two other death investigations, including a 2015 cold case that initially appeared to be an overdose.

That possible connection was made shortly after Shawn Grate told investigators about his involvement in the 2015 murder case of Rebekah Leicy and the 2007 slaying of a Marion woman, a source close to the investigation confirmed with NewsChannel 5.

Grate has provided police with information about the murders of Leicy and the Marion County victim, the source said, but specific details have not been released.

The new developments in the case - which came to light after a woman called 911, saying she was abducted - have spread into multiple counties. Details released on Saturday connect Grate to multiple cases involving deaths of women living in rural Ohio.

The source said Mansfield police searched a residence on Mulberry Street on Saturday. It’s not clear why they were searching the home.

Interesting they are calling Rebekah's case a murder now.
How many more are there? :scared:
I wonder what's on Mulberry Street?

I did a search for news about Mulberry Street and it seems to be a high crime area:

Jan 2016: Female armed robbery suspect arrested on Mulberry: http://www.richlandsource.com/news/...cle_3805a376-b552-11e5-899c-2b4ee51c856e.html
May 2016: DV violence call but no names and no charges filed: http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com...ice-calls-father-finds-deceased-son/84123648/
May 2016: Abandoned train depot on Mulberry was found w/ door open/sign of someone living there: http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com...police-call-fatal-overdose-reported/84312198/
August 2016: 8 overdoses in 39 minutes due to laced drugs: http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/mansfield-area-sees-8-overdoses-in-just-39-minutes/295216528
August 2016: Fist fight/damage to a car: http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com...lice-calls-death-suspected-overdose/88887558/

The break in to the train depot and the 8 overdoses in one night are the most interesting, IMO.

Yes! That's the one I found too:

There also seems to be a property on the 200 block of S.Mulberry up for Sheriff sale on the Richland County website. I think one house in particular seems to be connected to a few arrests and was possibly abandoned/vacant/used by squatters...
ETA: The details at the base of the linked article are very disturbing and make me wonder if SG, given his drug history, could have been dealing in bad/toxically-cut heroin...?

Mulberry street is a high crime area. It's also close to the VOA area (which is where I explained in another post - where the sexual offenders go)VOA- Volunteers of America.
Mulberry is a busy street that runs through the center of Mansfield. Mulberry pretty much runs into all the other streets in that downtown area.

I'm glad the FBI came in. I really doubt the police dept around here is equipped to handle this.

ASHLAND -- Murder suspect Shawn Michael Grate entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment Monday morning in Ashland County Common Pleas Court.

Appearing via Skype from Ashland County Jail where he is being held, Grate also waived his right to a speedy trail. He was represented by attorney Rolf Whitney.

Judge Ronald Forsthoefel ordered the case bound over to an Ashland County grand jury for consideration of an indictment on the charges. Grate's next court appearance was set for Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8 a.m.

MARION - Shawn Grate has been charged with two counts of murder in Ashland County, but Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey said he confessed to a local killing as well.

In March 2007, a man found skeletal remains at a dumping site on Victory Road, and while investigators determined the victim was a woman in her 20s, it remains a Jane Doe case.
Bailey said Grate told investigators he killed a woman in 2005 and then took her body to that site.
"He said this was the first (woman) he ever killed," Bailey said.
According to Bailey, Grate said the victim had been selling and delivering magazines from door to door and didn't deliver ones to the house where he was living, and that led to him killing her. He reportedly told investigators she may have been named Diana or Dana, that he thought she was 26, and that she lived in Ohio but not Marion County.
While Bailey said the killing occurred in the basement of the house where Grate lived at the time, he didn't want to give the address because new occupants live there now. Detectives searched the residence for any trace evidence.

This may help put things into perspective on heroin overdoses in Ohio and why these deaths might not be looked at very closely sometimes. I have been hearing about this a lot in the past year in Ohio.

---
Addiction specialists said the sharp increases in overdoses were a grim symptom of America’s heroin epidemic, and of the growing prevalence of powerful synthetic opiates like fentanyl. The synthetics are often mixed into batches of heroin, or sprinkled into mixtures of caffeine, antihistamines and other fillers.
In Cincinnati, some medical and law enforcement officials said they believed the overdoses were largely caused by a synthetic drug called carfentanil, an animal tranquilizer used on livestock and elephants with no practical uses for humans. Fentanyl can be 50 times stronger than heroin, and carfentanil is as much as 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Experts said an amount smaller than a snowflake could kill a person.

---

"Instead of having four or five overdoses in a day, you're having these 20, 30, 40, maybe even 50 overdoses in a day," says Tom Synan, who directs the Hamilton County Heroin Coalition Task Force in Southwest Ohio. He's also the police chief in Newtown, Ohio.
Synan says carfentanil turned up in Cincinnati in July. At times, the number of overdoses has overwhelmed first responders.
"Their efforts are truly heroic, to be going from call to call to call," he says. "One district alone had seen 14 in one shift, so they were nonstop."
First responders and emergency room workers are being told to wear protective gloves and masks. That's because carfentanil is so potent, it can be dangerous to someone who simply touches or inhales it.

How do you plead not guilty after you've led the police to someone's body?

So he killed her for not delivering magazines to his house?
We need to look for missing women from Ohio that fit this description--if she's not from Marion then she could have come form anywhere in the state. I've had magazine sales people come door-to-door from far away. They get dropped of in a neighborhood by the sales company. Sometimes they say they are trying to earn money for college or nursing programs.

How do you plead not guilty after you've led the police to someone's body?

Claiming insanity or accidental death. He'll say he killed them but he didn't mean to or it was their fault or he was insane at the time and is now all better.

He didn't have a defense attorney when he was talking to police and leading them to the body in Mansfield.

Now he does, and it's likely that the attorney advised him to plead not guilty and keep his mouth shut while he builds a defense strategy.

So the part where he killed her because his mom was mad at her was just a lie, or does it tie into the magazine delivery story?

I don't believe the magazine thing. It just sounds made up. I think he had her in that basement for other purposes then wanted to dispose of her when he was done with her. jmo

Marion Sheriff to give press conference on body found here in 2007 https://t.co/R9h4ZxfWxy

Sheriff says skeletal remains were found in his county on March 10, 2007.

The sheriff says Shawn Grate admitted to the murder. He said his mom was upset she didn't get magazines the woman sold so he killed her.

Sheriff says Grate was polite. Said he wanted to get this off his chest.

Sheriff says its hard to believe there are not more victims.

Sheriff said he would called Grate a serial killer. Says FBI wants to do a profile on Grate.
