On December 13, 1983, a Fulton County Deputy was flagged down by County Road 11 and County Road F by a witness stating he had found a nude body of a female lying in a ditch near the railroad tracks. The victim was later identified as Joann Jaso from Toledo, Ohio.

Yes, but my question was did he hire Powers and will pay him, or was Powers on the list of court appointed lawyers and JDW chose him? I'm asking because I thought he had no money. But maybe his sister arrived now? Sorry if these are confusing or dumb questions.

I agree, when I read Powers description I was wondering how he'd handle such a serious case. Maybe they will take another lawyer on board later on.

I was wondering why he chose Powers also! My sister used him for a divorce and domestic case, but murder? Why wouldn't you chose someone better qualified to represent you?

Was the 4 sq mile radius mentioned in the press conference or in the local news? I wonder if he (JDW) knew LE and the public were searching in a specific area and chose to leave CE outside of the radius. After all, it would be unlikely someone would see him leave CE where he did with so many occupied in a different area.

This is what I am thinking too. I think he was trying to avoid any search parties getting too close to his property or worse yet being asked to search his barn or other structures.

I don't remember if the announced the area they were searching, but her cell phone pinged off a tower close or over the Michigan border. So they initially focused on the area north of where her bike was found. That cell phone ping was detrimental IMO, but at the time they used what they had.

I felt compelled to post because I am a local. I am from "in town" Metamora, roughly 5-10 min away from where Sierah lived (I'm okay revealing that because I have since moved), and attended Evergreen, same as Sierah and Josh. I was one grade older than them, but my life was touched by both of them. Sierah was in 2 classes with me and was the sweetest soul. Good grades, active in sports and clubs, and an all around gracious and kind person. My mom also worked with Sierah at a job Sierah had just during the summers. When we heard that Sierah's body had been found over the weekend, we were on a family vacation and silently cried together in the middle of a restaurant. Those last little shreds of hope we had were destroyed. We tried not to let it ruin our trip, but the mood was definitely somber the test of the time. In the school musical one year, Josh was my dancing partner and reflected those qualities of Sierah's as well. So sweet and patient, too (I was a terrible dancer LOL). My heart breaks for them- they were so in love. If I'm not mistaken they had been together since middle school, probably age 13. The hardest part of this experience was seeing people try to accuse Josh of being suspicious before JDW was arrested. I had to avoid looking at social media comments because it both enraged me and made me want to cry that people would accuse Josh of hurting her, when if you really knew them, you could literally feel their love radiate when you were near them. I knew he would never, ever hurt Sierah. This whole ordeal has rocked our community. I think of all the times I biked and ran alone on that SAME street all those years and want to break down and cry knowing that creep was there all along. I hate that Sierah had to be sacrificed for him to finally (hopefully) be put to justice. She, her family, Josh, and everyone who loved her did not deserve this. I hope the courts make the right judgement. Sorry for the super long first post- I really have not been able to properly vent my feelings about this situation until now, so thanks for listening :)

So beautifully written. I'm so sorry for the loss you are feeling. Sierah was loved by many it seems. Welcome to Websleuths. I only wish it were under different circumstances.

Starry Night.......Thanks for posting these. The first link on your list is Crystal E Proctor. She was found in a cornfield in 1997. She was 20 years old. Blond hair, blue eyes and her murder was on JULY 27! Crystal doesn't appear to have a thread here, none that I found anyway.

--it doesn't appear that he has privately retained Mark Powers, since he asked for him when requesting a court appointed lawyer.

And now he has him. The guy that he "knows and trusts", and specializes in bankruptcy, defending him on a murder charge.

This is what brought me out of lurking status. Hi, everyone. My family was touched by evil in 1991. I've been around reading for a long time because of that, but never felt as compelled to say something as I do now. My cousin was abducted and taken from this earth and left dead in a cemetery in the middle of cornfields outside Columbus. If her killer had not been caught in 2008 (after being a cold case for 17 years) I'd be scratching my head wondering if JDW was to blame. When I read about Jaso I immediately thought "change the photo and area and that could've been about my cousin." I hate that another family is now scarred forever by this type of tragedy. I was 12 when my cousin was found and it changed the path of my family forever. I wasn't allowed to go outside alone for a long time after that and being introduced to evil so young, I often have anxiety about strangers and certain situations. Sierah's friends and family - they say time heals all wounds. I know it doesn't, but time does help us exchange the bad memories with the good and we develop coping mechanisms to help us out of the darkest hours. I pray so much for all of you. Also, I grew up west of Toledo so there's a little bit of a home attachment here. I'll probably go back to lurking now, but hi, I'm here reading. [emoji4] You are all remarkable humans and if only you were all cloned, this world would be a fantastic place.

I don't understand how he could claim inadequate representation when it is specifically what he asked. Looks like he's bringing a knive to a gun fight. He also may just be letting it all ride, using this attorney to get all his affairs in order knowing that there could be many other charges coming and his days of freedom are over.

I also think Powers is court appointed, not private counsel. At least now he is. The FCE article today made it sound like Powers may have been hired by JDW as co-counsel, and then when Shaffer asked to be removed, Powers was then appointed. It would seem wise of the state to give him whom he asked if they could to avoid his game playing later on. I have a feeling Shaffer wanted NOTHING to do with this case, and at the first opportunity he had to get out, he did, particularly if his client (JDW) wanted his trusted man, Powers, who is likely less qualified than Shaffer as his co-counsel.

I will point out that while Powers profile primarily highlights bankruptcy, it does state twice criminal representation, too. I wonder if this profile was pulled from a bankruptcy type of website database?
