I remember hearing out of GB's own mouth that there was a break-in at the house "about a year ago". It was in one of the TV interviews, but not sure which one at this point (possibly 10tv, since that has been my primary source).

Hadn't heard the other. Maybe it was the uncle who has been quoted more recently. Maybe GB has come out of shock somewhat and remembered the timing more precisely (and told his uncle).

I think it was GB who stated it, but for some reason I think there was also an article that said something to the effect of "family members report that Tina's house was ransacked." I could be wrong, but I think it was stated that the ransacking was more recent than a year ago.

I think TH may have told MH that her bf was coming home any minute to feed the dog in an effort to scare him away. She may have been forced to to send that text or MH did.

Couldn't find the article you're referring to, but while googling found this page for reference (there is a timeline link, which seems accurate for the most part):

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/extras/2010/knoxcountymissing/index.html

I have no doubt that The (Columbus) Dispatch had a reporter up here on this story (not quoting other sources).

I have signed up to listen to Archives of the scanner. It could take me days to find the call about MH being spotted near where THs truck was found.

But I want to throw a random thought out into the wind.

No one has considered that MH used SS's truck to dispose of the bodies. Sheriff Barber said in his first interview (outside the home), that SS's truck was found in the garage. Assuming there was access from the garage, directly into the house (and vice versa), he could very well have put the bodies in that truck and used that vehicle for his dirty work. After, returning to switch trucks, possibly to get back to his car, which many are assuming may have been near Kenyon (near where THs truck was found).

Just a thought.

All the reporting on this case caused as much confusion as it cleared up, IMO...here's a snip from an AP article that mentioned Kenyon College.

IIRC, in a presser Sheriff Barber said MH was in a car near where the pickup was found...and we'd heard early on the pickup was near the college.

Authorities first questioned Hoffman on Thursday, the day after Herrmann failed to show up for work at Dairy Queen. Police found him sitting in his car near a bike trail opposite property owned by Kenyon College, near where Herrmann’s pickup truck was found, Barber said.

I think other crimes definately need to be looked at again. Maybe this was his first murder but maybe it was his second or third. Im wondering if he hid the bodies so well because he made the mistake of not hiding others well enough. Another part of me wonders how many bodies we have in hollowed out trees. I will never look at a tree the same again. Ugh.

I in no way think this was MH's first murder but, I do think it was his first kidnapping to keep a live victim. It attempting that, the receipt, a tip, whatever led LE to Sarah.
I also believe it was his first attempt at this amount of victims at once.
Creating such large and devastating crime scene, not being able to cover or hide all the evidence. Past experiences may of just been one victim at a time.
In a lesser, quieter event, far less noticeable. But it gave him the experience, and confidence, (in his mind) to attempt this crime.

I would think that any other murders he may be connected with, would only be from the time he was released from the Colorado prison till now. There was likely no murders previous to the arson.
But it could of happened in any surrounding County or even State. He had a vehicle.
He could of done kidnappings before (like Sarah) but, still only one victim at a time, and with in a short period they probably met their demise.

I believe people should be looking at missing pets from the surrounding area. I could be wrong, but I think this was his first kill. Although he appears to be organized, he wasn't. He left the house with beer cans/bottles, blood at the scene, the receipt, and the list goes on. I think he got over zealous in obtaining his prize, his prize was SM. Now to figure out why was she the prize? that holds many answers. The fact he left her alive and allegedly unharmed (physically anyway) has meaning, don't forget that. If I am speculating too much, feel free to delete this moderators. The degree of violence and anger exhibited by the way he killed the other victims is very personal. He was willing to go to all lengths for the prize. Yes I believe this was very calculated, and I would not be surprised to find out that he had used them looking for an apartment as a means to acquaint himself with the family without them knowing he was acquainting himself. The fact that there was no sexual assault, per the Coroner tells me this was about SM, which earlier I thought perhaps her mom. But in getting into his mindset, what made this man full of anger and rage, having an emotional break, evil as he is, allow SM to go unharmed for five days? Opinions? This holds a big key to this mans frame of mind....IMHO

I wonder if he wasn't working on his insanity defense by collecting leaves. He appears to be a planner.

There will likely be no insanity defense. He is insane, no doubt. But not by the letter of the law.

His defense att. only job is to represent him in proceedings, and his only fight will be death penalty or life in prison.
Basically the defense att, is just there to defend him against the DP, which is his right, unfortunatly in this case.

And the only card MH has to play against the DP, is that he told them where the bodies were. And that’s likely not to even work in this case.

No doubt they will throw the key away, either way.

I’m not one for “street justice” but. In MH’s case I’d love to see it.
For an insanity defense you have to not know right from wrong, and MH’s does. He has already been imprisoned once before.
He hid the bodies, he hid the girl, he knew it would be wrong, to find them.
He planned (or attempted) to not be found out.
Insanity pleas are hard to achieve, and attempting one in this case would miserably fail.
It isn’t against the law to collect leaves, or even hang them on your walls in bags, if you are that nuts. But that’s a long stretch to a triple homicide and the rest of the turn of events in this crime.

Kinda makes me wonder if the WalMart receipt was in Tina’s truck? Maybe MH realized it was missing, and he went back after it but, it was to late.
He had so much else on his hands at that time, it seems hard to think he would of just gone back so soon to just hang out and watch, with other loose ends going on.

But I had always thought that the receipt may have been in his home from a “previous” purchase to the crime. Or in Tina’s home?.

it was one of the local posters here that mentioned it... the one who knew about Tina taking care of an elderly lady's dogs iirc

2 Comments- I still don't find Catfish Billies comments weird or suspicious, beeches being hollow like that is common knowledge -any guy who's been up in trees for trimming or hunting knows about these holes up top that lead into the hollow trunk.Saying"if he was smart"was a major faux pas-but don't forget most of us on WS talk about this kind of stuff alot and are very careful to never give criminals "credit".Secondly, like the final comment in the article cited about 5 posts back, made by MH's "friend" about him(MH)liking all this attention etc..I have felt that he revealed the bodies location to get "recognition" for his "genius" in finding this obscure hiding place.Even the sheriff admits the bodies would likely have never been found.

Interesting info from this article - could this friend be the one who made the suggestion about looking in a hollow tree on topix?

"Hoffman’s friend, who asked not to be named, said he was not surprised that the bodies of those snatched from Apple Valley were found inside the 65-foot-tall tree.

Early last week, the man told the sheriff’s office and The Dispatch that searchers should be looking up trees, in trees, follow the trees. The friend said Hoffman was a strategic thinker. He doubted that Hoffman just stumbled across the tree."

The Topix guy is from Atlanta GA, and wouldn't know Hoffman.

There was talk on FB about someone posting who had found a "friend" of his, and gave his name and link to his facebook page. I forget the guy's name now, but he was from Fredericktown and was into survivor skills, nature and similar things. People who knew him were upset that anyone would link him to the crimes and defended him. He worked at Kenyon, so people started speculating. So probably that guy talked to LE.

It’s not Catfish Billy, he gave his FB page too.

He just guessed right. Gosh I hope I never do, if it sticks to you like this! LOL!
Now Hopeful was another matter. But none of that can be discussed, although what he/she said has turned up in other places too.

But it is speculation, I find it odd though, that they posted the same thing before MH told where the bodies were.

Without going into specifics, early on I got the sense that there were family members of LM and GB posting on those forums. Every now and then it got too personal. Something said about LMs fathering skills here, something about GB being guilty there, saying mean things about TH etc. I don't remember seeing anything about SS, so it was as if those 2 sides had already been at odds for a while. They stuck out as more personal to me. So I now believe that Hopeful was connected to LM's side somehow.

After a while, I couldn't follow that forum closely. It got too off the wall, especially with the religious feuding.

Likely so CKay-
I don’t like to see it take a personal turn either. I was only being ask by another poster, what had happened (about the whole Topix hullabaloo.)

I’m just glad they caught MH, I’m glad Sarah is doing as well as can be expected.
I hope in time, by whatever means work the best for them, that they are able to manage some healing and a normal life. Including the Sprang family.
It’s just a tragedy beyond epic proportion.

We will probably never know what makes these Psycos tic, they are all diffrent.

I don't think he is insane at all. I think he is just pure evil. I think he is a planner, And I think he could have possibly been attempting to make himself look insane. He succeeded in making himself look crazy. I think he planned everything right down to every detail including hanging leaves in bags from his walls. I believe he wanted the world to think he was crazy so he would get more attention. I personally think he is just pure evil.

I think she was forced to send that text message about the dog being fed and here is why..

I had a husband who had an affair. Looking back he started sending me annoying stupdi texts about small stuff.. Like hey i'm leaving the house hope you have ag ood day. In my ignorance I'd respond with yeah have a good day too, I'll be home at 3:30. He knew me well.. and knew I'd respond with my own plans and schedule etc even over the texts. I can remember him saying Oo0ps forgot to feed the dog, and i responded with that's ok, I'll get him when I come home for lunch at noon. He'd then know when I was and wasn't going to be out driving, be at the house etc..

Just a thought.. maybe psycho was using that as a way to guage where the boyfriend was....
I don't know probably very off the wall

I really wonder if the old poster who was friends with the guy who lives out of state and had hired T or S to take care of his elderly mother's dogs, ever contacted LE and told them about that....?
