OK OK - Julie Mitchell, 34, Oklahoma City, 2 Nov 2010

How old is she? I've seen 30, 34, and 38? Also, I've seen various ages for the child = 6 months and 1 year.

How hard is it for the media to get the basic facts correct?

If there was a lot of damage and blood, maybe he thought she shot herself?

Of course, my hinky meter is dinging like crazy......

Here's another article with basically the same info as on the video posted by fhc....this one doesn't mention Julie being found in the closet with her daughter. They do list her age as 34, but who knows....

According to the article, the 911 call does mention her being shot. So, I guess it is plausible when you see that much blood around a head, you're first thought would be a gunshot wound. Just not 100% sure why you would think suicide rather than murder? Unless there was no forced entry and the baby is unharmed....

Supplemental info re: fhc's excellent KOCO-5 video post above
Oklahoma City TV station reports Julie Mitchell's daughter found covered in blood
The body of homicide victim Julie Mitchell was found in a closet along with her uninjured daughter, who was covered in blood, KOCO-5 reports. The mother was beaten to death, police said.
---
The station obtained a fire department report about the homicide case, which fire officials said this morning was released in error and will not be given to any other media outlets.

The fire department report obtained by KOCO states that Oklahoma City fire investigators were first on the scene. The report states that paramedics carried Julie Mitchell's 13-month-old child out of the house covered in blood.

"That report should have never been released," Fire Deputy Chief Cecil Clay told The Oklahoman this morning. He said it should not have been made public because it is part of the police investigation.

Julie Mitchell's obituary, published yesterday in The Oklahoman:

The years she has on facebook saying when she graduated from high school and college makes me think the age of 34 is probably correct. 1994 and 1998

A new lead Oklahoma City detectives pounced on.

We're also told federal agents are involved and have seized computers in the Mitchell's house.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The KFOR newsroom was drawn closer to the Metro's latest homicide Friday when we got an anonymous letter detailing the brutal crime. Julie Mitchell, 34, was found dead inside her home along Northwest 150th near Western, Tuesday night. The letter began: "I am writing this letter to help. Hopefully it will solve the murder for Julie Mitchell." It went into great detail alleging the state of Mitchell's family life, how her murder was planned and the instructions to cover up her death.

They're also sharing new information about Julie's husband, Teddy.

Chief Bill Citty with the OKC Police said, "You have a case here where an individual has been involved in illegal activity for quite some time as a gambler. It's common knowledge that he was involved in bookmaking. So, the type of people he's associated with don't want to be known."

The medical examiner says the trauma she sustained caused Mitchell's death.

We're also told federal agents are involved and have seized computers in the Mitchell's house.

This could be nothing...The husband has 4 children listed on his FB page. I've done some digging and unless one of his kids goes by another name, he left one off. The particular son he left off doesn't have Julie Mitchell on her friends list and all of the other family members that I can clearly identify, do.

I saw her husband's FB page when this first happened. Now it is gone. So are the FB pages of his sons. With the exception of one. I will not mention his name here, but he is the one interviewed or mentioned in earlier links.

I feel so so bad for her and her daughter. Thank God her baby was not harmed. My prayers are for her and her family.

Her facebook account is still open. Her info page is the only one viewable to non friends. Do a search for her name and put her location as Oklahoma City, OK. She has her maiden name I presume as her middle name. Sorry I never know if I'm permitted to post links to public personal sites.

That's a big ol W T H right there.

Not surprising in a situation where a lot of people were involved in illegal activity. No matter how much you want to help, you don't want to go to jail for bookmaking etc. (in ref. to the anonymous letter -- since the quote didn't quote enough information...)

I'm reminded somewhat of the Drew & Stacy Peterson marriage.
Older man with grown children, the children in their 30s, marries younger woman by many years and has a baby or two.
Stacy Peterson was barely out of high school.

Something that strikes me as odd is that the 30 year old stepson calls 911 and says "Mom shot herself." I find it HIGHLY unlikely a 30 year old man is going to refer to a 34 year old as his "stepmom" or "mom." I have a relationship like that in my family - and the guy is referred to as his name - not as a parent or step parent because we are so close in age. I am suspicious about this.

Every family is different. I know one family where the couple married in their upper 60's and the fortysomething son calls his new stepmother "Mom." It's just what he finds respectful.

London's tabloid Daily Mail has picked up the story;
no new reporting here so it's stuff we already know:
Mother battered to death and dumped in closet is discovered with blood-drenched daughter crawling at her side

As for the adult stepson's use of "mom," it all depends, I guess; In Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy famously wrote, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." So much of imagining the circumstances of this case depends on whether the Mitchells were or were not a happy family, including what might seem the unusual act of the stepson calling Julie Mitchell "mom" when she was only four years older than he.

See, I don't find that situation odd - the new stepmom is old enough to be his mom. In this case, there's a 4 year difference. I guess it's just me.

I see your point -- I imagine lots of people would agree with you. There's no way that situation could not be awkward for everyone involved. Perhaps calling her Mom was to emphasize the new family roles?

Whether he typically called her "mom" or "stepmom" is irrelevant, did you expect him to call and say "Julie shot herself" of course not. In calls to 911 the majority of callers identify the victim by relationship, not by their name.

The victim's husband has 3 adult children (boys) the youngest graduated from high school in '08, the oldest is 30, the name (or age) of the son who found the victim has not been released, but it was NOT the 30 year old.

"Mitchell's 30-year-old stepson said he has received messages of condolences for the past 36 hours. He said his brother, another one of Mitchell's stepsons, found her body in the house late Tuesday." http://newsok.com/stepson-of-mom-fo...eciates-social-media-messages/article/3511158

Good point, yes, I hadn't thought of that but the context makes "my mom" the obvious thing to say.
