I'm not blaming the divorce or anything. Just that it is a major life stressor and traumatic for kids, some more than others.

He would have been 10 or 11 when it occurred. Just an observation, another piece of the puzzle that shaped him.

Oh, yeah, I know... wasn't saying you. I'm more surprised the family or spokesperson for them hasn't come out and expressed how sorry they are that another student was murdered instead of how great the kid was and the stressors.

Not sure this means anything but interesting/curious about the two incidents....

[modsnip] According to Jared Padgett’s Facebook page, he lives in Clackamas, Oregon, the scene of a 2012 mall shooting.

In that incident, Jacob Tyler Roberts, Clackamas Town Center shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaIn that incident, Roberts wore tactical gear and a hockey mask.

On FB, a friend/acquaintance posted asking where Jared was, but also said in an interview he knew he was the shooter already.

This is a great and long article...

He was one of those organized people who liked order, liked everything to be really perfect," said Agustin Guzman, a 16-year-old who attended Reynolds' Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps with Jared Padgett at the beginning of this school year. "We have this thing where we had to learn how to fold the American flag correctly and I was in his group. He would get really irritated if we messed up," said Guzman, adding that Padgett showed up with his own Army combat uniform before they were handed out in class.

During the first semester, JROTC students were required to wear either the combat uniform or a dress uniform on Wednesdays, Guzman said. But Padgett, he said, often wore his every day of the week.

While Guzman had been placed in the class, he said he believed Padgett had intentionally signed up for it.

"He seemed normal, but you had to be careful what you talked about with him, you had to be respectful," Guzman said. "He just kind of seemed like he had strict parents. He had to keep decent grades. It seemed like he felt out of place or awkward about certain topics, like partying or like girls."

...Court records show that his mother filed for divorce in 2010. Michael Padgett was given full custody of Jared.

Curious as to what could have triggered this kid. I know that research shows coverage of these incidents will lead to more. But there still must be a motive. He looks to have had a nice family, I feel sorry for them. He doesn't look the type that someone would bully, but you never know. In a family with a military member I'm not surprised by guns being around. My dad and uncles are cops and my brother was always interested (not obsessed) by guns, and handled them safe, and then joined the USCG. Having guns around doesn't always lead to this. What are the underlying factors? Mental illness no doubt, plus an obsession with anti-government?

We don't yet know much about the shooter, but it is a good guess that he had some kind of mental disorder. Having the firearms and a large supply of ammunition available at home was an enabling factor. (9 standard AR-15 magazines hold 270 rounds).

The Columbine shooters managed to acquire weapons and ammunition without their parents knowledge, but they were a couple years older.

I don't expect a full blown apocalypse, and I wouldn't survive one anyway.

Having said that I do see the possibility of civil unrest, rioting, etc...to be a real threat in some areas (New Orleans is an example, the L.A. riots are another example).

When the EBT cards stopped working a few months ago there were "mini riots" in walmarts within MINUTES, not days or weeks. If something happened that disrupted the distribution of food things could and would get ugly VERY fast in some areas of the country.

Anyone who thinks folks are just to "civilized" too behave badly, or that the government is capable of handling ANY crisis is REALLY out of touch with reality.

Hm. What about the ones who come from families that have plenty that think they are entitled to more? Do they just do mass shootings?

I agree with you, if this man was speaking for the family. I'm not sure he is, though.

Yeah, I'm sure they just found him and he was willing to speak. The family needs to make some statement I think.

I agree, here is a case where the father was arrested when his son brought a loaded gun to school. BUT looks like they only arrested the father because he was a felon with guns in his house. Otherwise he probably would not have been arrested.

Guitar case, I believe?

This statement from the sister just struck me. I thought if my sister was there I would want to know if my sister is ok. I would not really be wondering about the shooter at that point.

At 10:16 a.m., Cooper added, "They keep saying the shooter is dead but I wanna know who it is!!! I'm so stressed right now."

I wonder if for some reason she thought it might be her brother???

He was the youngest of five children.

The supertentent lady - "we have a robust security system in our schools", I do not think now is really the time to be making such statements just IMO.

Has there been any mention in terms of why it took so long to identify (parents gone etc)

I know... it seems she'd be asking if any victims were dead.

I also saw a sensationalized story from the Daily Mail, calling him "Mormon shooter" who argued about Hitler with students the week before the shooting.[/QUOTE]

Amazing how quick monikers are created. Personally I wish news reporters wouldn't do this. In a disturbing way it glorifies the killers. Jmo

Very interesting post thank you! Sad that we are wordage (?) "this one".........but this one is baffling in that he seemed to have frineds that cared about him, knew about him, he had interests, his grades were good etc.

It is also odd in that he was highly armed and killed a stranger and not others in passing?

Padgett’s Friend Said the Shooter Looked ‘Pissed Off’ When He Saw Him Just Before the Shooting

Commenter on Jared Padgett's Facebook page says they were "always talking about guns"

x-teacher of Jared Padgett to "he was a really nice kid and was very respectful. He idolized his brother who was in the war"

Friends were posting yesterday on Facebook that Jared Padgett's family hadn't heard from him

Jared Padgett . Wow. I would NEVER think he would do something this awful.

http://heavy.com/news/2014/06/jared...nman-reynolds-high-school-photos-pics-tweets/

JG, another student on the bus, said someone asked Padgett what was in the guitar case and duffel bag, and Padgett said it was his football gear and a uniform stand, a rack used for keeping uniforms crisp, The Oregonian reported.

"He wouldn't say anything else," JG, 15, told the newspaper.

Padgett had a conflicting image among other students.

"He always talked about guns and sometimes got mad," student KE said, adding that he could also be kind and respectful.

"He helped kids and I never would have thought he would do that," KE recalled. "And he was really neat."

Young, seemed normal, a nice looking teen. What went wrong?
Anyone know if he had a specific target or was he shooting at random?
I am guessing since he was in a gym
locker room iirc, he was looking for the coach? Only guessing and thinking out loud.

I think sometimes that families think these things are normal and they encourage talk and actions that lead to hate.

I don't think you have to be mentally ill in terms of a medical diagnosis.

Is hate considered mental illness? It seems like I have seen hate as a family value in some of these aituations.

I was going to ask about hate...... Is hate a mental illness?
Can someone feel hate without feeling upset, pissed, violent, angry? Idk

I want to know if Jared was angry at a particular person or
group?
Did he feel berated, embarrassed over a certain situation?

I'm not sure about 'hate' in this case, but we know so little. Jared seems unusually in control/rigid/organized/single minded for a 15 year old?
