I'm not sure how much stock you can put in tenses. I know that in hindsight they are like "aha" but when I was involved in a (fortunately very temporary) missing person situation, I actually spoke in the past tense, as I really thought something very disastrous must have happened to explain this person's absence. Perhaps I am just melodramatic, or have read too much websleuths, but I switched amongst past and present in my interview with LE although the person in question was very much alive. I think with guilty people this can be telling, but I also think that it is a clue that can be easily manipulated.
I totally understand what you are saying but I thought that I'd add my two cents as I was kind of surprised of how my language came out during that stressful time, luckily for us everything worked out.
