GUILTY OR - Heather Mallory, 32, Portland, 8 March 2008

I'm not sure how much stock you can put in tenses. I know that in hindsight they are like "aha" but when I was involved in a (fortunately very temporary) missing person situation, I actually spoke in the past tense, as I really thought something very disastrous must have happened to explain this person's absence. Perhaps I am just melodramatic, or have read too much websleuths,:) but I switched amongst past and present in my interview with LE although the person in question was very much alive. I think with guilty people this can be telling, but I also think that it is a clue that can be easily manipulated.
I totally understand what you are saying but I thought that I'd add my two cents as I was kind of surprised of how my language came out during that stressful time, luckily for us everything worked out.

The laws need to be changed to allow LE to treat a missing person's home as a potential crime scene immediately after a disappearance. This would help put a stop to these punks lawyering up and giving them the ability to have time to clean up evidence along the way.

I think so too.

Why would Cole openly admit to this?

The husband of a missing Portland woman told KGW he failed a police lie detector test, although he is not officially been named a suspect in the case. (more at link)

What more info does the Oregon LE need:

Let's see: Heather stated he was a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.

The couple argued the same day she disappeared.

He lied about going to work the day she disappeared.

He talked in past tense about Heather, while being interviewed.

He conveniently had a check for $500.00 from her account the day she disappeared.

She is still missing. No ATM activity, no cell phone activity, no email activity.

Lets see: LE let him pass state lines and in addition, still have custody of that poor innocent 3 year old boy!!:eek:

Thank god the parents are speaking out now.

I hope they get evidence on her computer.

A Prosecutor probably won't touch this case without some kind of evidence that there has been a crime. I wonder if LE found anything in the apt when they went in with the search warrent? It takes so long for anything to come back from those crime labs. I also wonder if they ever went over his car for evidence. Probably not as they didn't search the apt until after he moved out.
Strange he didn't take any furniture or anything with him. Guess he didn't want anything that will remind him of the crime he committed.

Is LE even searching for her body? Have they done searches at all? Heck, they could have taken the dogs and started in the apt to see where the dogs went from there. Probably to late now.

Oddly, this case seems to have nothing. Lack of interest from the public, and letting this husband cross state lines and keep the child.

I don't think Heather walked.

I think she wasn't in love with her husband anymore, and that's why he lost it.

I am just glad the parents of Heather are seeking answers for this poor woman!

I don't think that she walked away either. Her husband's lack of interest in her whereabouts must be speaking loud and clear to LE. Even if they did have a fight that morning...if he is innocent..why is he not concerned? Instead he moves to Idaho...what the heck!

I knew Heather in high school. A friend told me about Heather missing and I am so sad to hear about all of this. I'm also curious why this isn't out in the media more? I google her name every few days in hopes that there is some new information, but nothing.

How come some stories get national coverage, and some don't?

Welcome, idontgetit. LOVE that nickname because I don't get it half the time either. This seems to me one of those classic cases that the media would love, but I've never seen it on the news.

I'm sorry your friend is missing. I really hope she just ran off. Wouldn't that be nice for just once? Did her husband go to your school?

I do not know who her husband is. He did not go to the same high school.

I pray for the best, but common sense tells me something isn't right. Heather was always smiling. The Heather I know isn't someone who would EVER leave her son behind if she was to leave her husband. Never ever ever.

I would love to help in anyway I can. I just don't know what to do! Even though Heather and I didn't stay in contact after high school, I feel like I need to do something. This situation has been very heavy on my heart and I'm just at a loss for words.

Hey there INTOO- I am a PDX local and know that the first thing I thought when seeing this on the news was that moms don't often leave their babies behind. Fishy, IMO.
Have you tried contacting Heather's parents and seeing if they need help with publicity? You could also contact media- like KATU's "On Your Side" and express your dismay at the lack of coverage.
Has her car been recovered? I can't remember.

Her car was recovered and processed by LE. But interestingly, they will not release where the car was found.

Suzi- Doesn't that seem really odd? If they were looking for a perp or witnesses, they would want to narrow down the location. What are they thinking?

I think it's very odd. I honestly can't remember a case where the location of a vehicle found was witheld. I've run every scenario in my mind I can think of and I am coming up with zilch.

There was something about the car that changed the direction of the investigation.

(snip)
There have been few developments in the case since April 2, when the story was first reported in the Gateway. Mallory’s car, a red 2001 Ford Focus, was located a few weeks later.
The Portland Police Department hasn’t released any details about the car’s condition, but homicide detectives joined the investigation soon after the car was located, said Portland Police Spokesman Brian Schmaltz.
When Mallory first disappeared, the PPD did not suspect foul play.
“There is a lot of speculation in cases like these,” Schmaltz said, “But we don’t typically confirm anything.”
Although no other details — including the names of any suspects — have been officially released, the police told Jeni Mallory that her son-in-law was a person of interest. Cole was not initially a suspect when the investigation began in March.
