I agree with that, Lots2Learn. And I think some people may have just decided to keep their heads down and not come forward with any suspicions they may have. :(

Trouble is, Lennie Ames had built up quite a following as the little man standing up for his rights against the big, bad authorities. He presented himself as a victim and also other placer owners were impressed by his do-it -yourself legal fight, that went on so long.

Some of his take on how placers could 'fight for their rights' was quoted extensively by people who were obviously unaware of what he was really getting up to on his claim, and also that he LOST his legal fight. I have seen a couple of people who know what they are talking about having conversations about all that online though - basically pointing out he seemed to think if a law didn't suit him, he felt entitled to ignore it.

To me, it all just highlights the glaring discrepancies between his behaviour before Stephanie disappeared and after; he's all over the web sticking up for 'victims' and going head-to-head with the law over his rights before; after, he falls almost silent about Stephanie, leaves the state and doesn't even mention he's a POI online, let alone defend himself.......unless you count that single youtube out there, apparently made by someone else. And which contributes absolutely zero to finding Stephanie, in my opinion.

Yesterday we were making pancakes and my son said, "Remember how Auntie Steph wouldn't eat breakfast until about 2pm?" I just kept cooking. "Remember how you used to make LOTS of waffles for breakfast so Stephie could have some in the afternoon?" "Remember how much we laughed, Mama? We all had so much fun together. Nothing is the same now. Nothing is the same." Then he put his head on the table and cried. I just hugged my boy and we talked about how much we miss her. We talked about how we both think about her every day. We talked about how she filled the room with her warmth and laughter. "Mama, I hope she waits for us in heaven. I hope we all get to be together. Maybe she is looking after us, protecting us?"

The Holidays were especially difficult for us. Steph would have been with us, decorating the tree, making sure things were tip-top. If I didn't have a son who needed something normal, I wouldn't have decorated at all. One of my wonderful friends brought over a mound of pre-baked sugar cookies and all of the frostings and decorations because I just wasn't up to baking - it was fun, but there was a hole. A hole that remains in the middle of everything we plan or do. A hole that keeps me from sleeping and finds me pacing the floor, playing silly games on my phone, trying to stanch the flow of pain that comes from it. Nothing is the same since the 4th of July. Nothing is the same and that aching hole is still here. My son will never be the same - he was an innocent and that MONSTER stole his beloved Auntie Steph and took his innocence at the same time! He now knows that monsters ARE real and it breaks my heart.

I recall Carry Fisher saying that "holding onto resentment is like drinking poison, hoping it will kill the other person." I agree with her, but I hear my frustration echoed in SadEyes on-line voice, and in the voices of "Y'all" that are helping find our beloved Stephanie. It is my prayer, for all of us, that we find compassion for the one's around us. That we love a little more and that we extend ourselves to those in need.

Stephanie's last gift to us; life is short and we better make the best of the here and now, because this moment is the ONLY moment we have... and now that moment is gone.

Wow! You've all been busy today while I was buried in other stuff. :) Thanks for infusing some energy into Stephanie's thread. I'll chime in later. Off to bed.

:offtobed:

Through this case, I found and signed up the community journalism site *********. I'm in the process of writing an article about this case...I should have it finished by Friday. Which one of you non-insider WS lovelies will volunteer to fact check it for me?

As horrific and sad as so many of the cases on WS are, I haven't yet shed a tear whilst reading one. I just did reading this thread. I think it's having read all of Dicentra's wonderful descriptions of Stephanie and how they've helped me feel like I know even just a small part of Stephanie's clearly beautiful nature, how unfair this is, how sad and lost all those that know and love her are feeling. My heart is really heavy. :(

Quotes snipped for space. BBM

I would think that LE would have checked out POI nationwide to see if he had any other LE agencies interested in him. But then again, they may know something & cannot reveal it. After all, really truly, what info has LE ever revealed? NOTHING!

What will it take for they media to be interested in a missing person case in RUCH??? Stephanie was an active member in her community. She previously owned a restaurant. She VOLUNTEERED, I'll repeat that she VOLUNTEERED to cut wood for the poor!!! I don't know one solid person on this earth that goes out & does strenuous physical labor work for anyone without getting paid for it!!!! SHE DID IT FOR FREE!!!! Why isn't the JCFC that she VOLUNTEERED for getting more ACTIVELY involved? And if you are actively involved please correct me! Has the JCFC put up any reward for information on her disappearance? Has Crime Stoppers put up a reward for information? Upon checking all the news articles & researching on the Internet I cannot find anything about a reward! NOTHING! I am hoping that the new year brings answers to all the questions that have been hushed for the past 6 months. Maybe the NOTHINGS can turn into SOMETHINGS!

What great questions, Sad Eyes! I hope a huge spotlight shines on the answers this year. The media around here is not particularly aggressive about keeping stories alive long term, even when pestered by people like me and others.

I do think LE knows a lot that they aren't saying. Unfortunately, they insisted on media quiet early on so as not to jeopardize the investigation. The local community as a whole was not aware of Stephanie's disappearance unless they happened to catch a few news stories. LE didn't share info early that could have helped IMO. As a result, the community was asked to remember seeing Stephanie's car a month after it was driven the night of July 4. Oh sure I keep track of cars and the date I saw them!

Other than one statement to the media by the JCFC director July 17, JCFC was not advocating for their hardworking volunteer in any public way. There wasn't even a large sign in front of their office on a main thoroughfare in Ashland, just a wimpy poster in their window. They got involved six weeks later distributing posters provided by Stephanie's family. Six weeks! No reward has been offered by JCFC, Crimestoppers or family!

I'm not one to impute bad motives to LE or anyone else, but their silence IMO has slowed this case down. I would be making good use of the media if someone I'm close to disappeared, or if I were LE trying to get information to solve a case. Everything has been too little, too late.

Lilibet hopefully JCSO does read the comments. I am very curious as to why they have warrants out on POI & his son & did not arrest them? And if LE knows where they are then why aren't they being extradited? Or maybe they are waiting for someone in GA to dissapear? IMO,JMO, MOO & anything else that may apply to my last sweet remark.
Lilibet & Zwiebel hope your holidays were wonderful & a special thanks to the 2 of you for keeping this thread alive. Sending you virtual XXXX & OOOO's!

Back at you with the virtual XXXXXX & OOOOOO's!

The warrants are for such minor charges I guess they are not worth trying to bring Lennie Ames back across state lines.

I'm not sure why he wasn't arrested when he was still in Oregon though. There was loads of confusion about that - I recollect first LE said they didn't know where he was, then they said they did, then they said he was in Georgia.

Regarding the warrants, they may not have been issued until they disappeared. I'm speculating that the warrants are not urgent to LE, but may be useful to them at some point. I don't think LE will make any meaningful arrests until they have enough evidence lined up to make it worthwhile.

The suggestion in that comment, combined with the comment here in this link (read it carefully, see where she says where she thinks he is) is worrying. No way to tell if it's the same person of course....though the name is not common.

http://www.justanswer.com/real-estate-law/7mvm2-bought-house-lady-quitclaim-deed-it-reads.html

Putting together some pieces of information, we are pretty sure it's the same person, but don't have proof. I'm going to dig some more. My focus will be Wyoming, since that is where Ames had property and lived at one time.

I agree with that, Lots2Learn. And I think some people may have just decided to keep their heads down and not come forward with any suspicions they may have. :(

I agree that people have decided to keep silent about what they know. Lennie Ames is a very dangerous person. Everyone in Ruch knows this and LE has been informed of this repeatedly.

He did ZERO to actively assist in finding Stephanie, except call in the media and give his famous "I'm baffled" interview July 23. In that interview he pointed the finger at Stephanie's neighbor/former boyfriend. It was a short, self-serving interview segment and Ames wants the media to air the whole 30 minutes! Maybe in that part he explains his actions and answers important questions? Or does he just play the role of the poor, baffled, victimized boyfriend?

If you cross him, at the very least you will be subjected to verbal abuse. I have read many of his responses to people commenting on his videos that make it clear that he can't tolerate a different opinion, respectfully stated. There are actually three videos posted by his buddy. I'm quite sure Ames made them. He defends himself by attacking others and even threatens to sue WS! That is not how an innocent person behaves IMO.

So, here we are, in about the same spot this case was six months ago. I'm sure LE has info we aren't aware of that they can't act on yet. At least I hope so. I'm grateful that Stephanie's sister has spoken out more forcefully and has addressed Ames directly. I hope she keeps advocating for Stephanie actively with the media. What needs to happen now is for Stephanie to be found, so this case can move forward. Anyone who knows ANYTHING needs to get past their fear and do the right thing.

Me! Former editor here, though you wouldn't know it from some of the mistakes I make here! I can pull myself together when I have to though.....

Dicentra, just hugs to you and your boy. Stephanie would hate to see you two grieving, I'm sure. I baked a cake for Bob's birthday which was a HUGE deal for me, then I donated it to people who really enjoyed it. I don't know, but maybe next time there is a Stephanie date you and kiddo could do something similar? It could help him feel he was doing something for his beloved Auntie Steph, and would be a lovely gesture on Stephanie's behalf if it went to someone who doesn't usually get the chance to sample home baking.

Plus, pictures could go on the FB page, to show just how much people care......(not that there is any question of people not caring here).

What a lovely post, Grace. Thank you Dicentra and for-ashley for sharing your dear friend Stephanie with us. We each come to these WS cases for a variety of reasons, even though we don't know the victim. In my case, I'm local, my daughter is Stephanie's age, and Lennie Ames made me mad!

But thanks to your wonderful heartfelt descriptions of Stephanie and what her loss has meant to you, for me it's now about Stephanie and her friends and family, not just about what drew me here initially. Your feelings are entwined with mine.

As always, sending hugs.

There is very sad news today from the thread Zwie and I set up for Sam Hoyt. He disappeared in Richmond, Va 11/22 while having some paranoid delusions. Today we learned that a person found in the James River about two weeks ago is Sam. Apparently he committed suicide the day he disappeared. He had been taken to the hospital the night before but not held.

His stepfather and girlfriend posted the sad news. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Were there any links to Georgia before Stephanie disappeared? I am noticing remains have recently been discovered there. Authorities are saying they are very old and I do not think it is Stephanie. But what we have learned here is just making me wonder if there could be some older connection.....

Very unlikely. But stranger things have happened.

As far as I know, POI's son's wife and her mother are the only Georgia links. I think it's unlikely too, but I understand why you would think about it.

This underscores the necessity of making sure Stephanie's family has submitted DNA samples. Without it (and dental records) making a definite ID can be impossible at a later date.

Thank you Lilibet for the update. I will keep Sam's family in my prayers. Such sad news to start the new year. :(

Thank you Lilibet for the update on Sam Hoyt. Such sad news to start the new year. :( I will keep Sam & his family & his girlfriend in my prayers.

I haven't been here in a while...I have been having some personal problems etc... Still working on the article I mentioned a couple of weeks ago...Don't give up on me!
You guys mentioned Sam Hoyt, It's a sad story but I am glad the family now has have closure. More local to me, the body(or part of) 14 year old boy Avonte Oquendo was found. This is also a very sad story---Avonte, who was severely
autistic, somehow managed to run out of his school in Queens NY. That was the last time he was seen. I never really had reason to follow missing person cases before Stephanie but with Sam being a friend of a friend and Avonte being local, I was kind of following them too. I guess I was hoping to come here and find some news on this snowy night. The "3" rule... I still hold some hope that Stephanie's story will have a happier ending but either way, I pray for some kind of closure to happen soon--For her family and all who love her.

It's nice to have you drop by. It's been pretty quiet. I keep trying to think of a way to stir things up.

I was sorry to read about Avonte. That was a really hard case. I didn't follow it closely because of Sam and Stephanie and Lynne Spalding. I'm keeping an eye on Teleka Patrick's unusual case, and the McStays, but Stephanie is my number one! I'd really like to see a thorough cadaver dog search in those mountain in the spring. Finding her is the happiest ending we can hope for at this point IMO. And bringing someone to justice. Hope it will be this year.

Respectfully BBM - sadly, this seems like one of those cases in which unless the victim is found, nothing more will be done.

Oh, I dunno. Some people just can't seem to keep themselves out of trouble, even when they have seen the worst that it can lead to.

People's loyalties change. Love can turn to fear and loathing and one day, someone will talk. My wish is for Stephanie to be found and someone to be brought to justice too. Not long now, I hope.

Those are my thoughts exactly....!

Unfortunately, I agree with you OldSteve. However, there have been plenty of cases where a body was never found and they had enough circumstantial evidence to convict. Hopefully, LE is gathering enough circumstantial evidence to make an arrest in this case. I sure hope it doesn't end up a cold case.
