The PR effort massively overestimated Oscar's appeal to the so-called average person. IIRC Arnie was rabbiting on after the initial verdict (or maybe just before) that the long term plan was to get him to the Olympics, as though some hard remorse and grief wiuld pace the way for redemption later.
The problem, I think, is that while most of the population aren't as obsessed as us and haven't been following every little detail from the onset, his entire version is based on an unlikely occurrence. Nearly everyone has heard a noise in the night at some stage and those who have invariably look for the person who should be beside them in bed. All the discussions I've read on more general forums come back to this time and time again.
Most people just don't believe him, it's not got much to do with Nel's efforts or anything else, more that supposedly hearing a noise, grabbing a gun and screaming down a corridor only to pump 4 bullets into a closed bathroom door without calling for or checking on the person who is supposed to be sharing your bed seems ludicrous to most.
