Backpack dimensions are 22 x 12.76 x 9.8 pack = 27.25 rod length using all of x,y,z instead of just all of 22. Or to put it another way what we see as 22 inches in the photo of the pack can actually conceal, say, a straight tape measure from the hardware section of Target LOL that is extended another 5-1/4 inches.
P.S. the AR-15 tends to be carried in 2 pieces which has nothing to do with adjusting the 4-inch travel of the buttstock.

There's a ruler provided by the FBI under the firearm. And the measurements for a basic AR upper (Aero in this case) with a 16" barrel & standard flash supressor are pretty consistently 24.25" to 25". And none of the photos I've seen show the magazine. Obviously he had at least one. And the range finder, phone, probably had water. And that remote detonator. That's a lot of kit for that little bag.
I'm just wondering if the rifle had already been stashed on the roof before the crowds arrived. Maybe when he was out there flying the drone.

It's taken 51 days after the crime to correct the timeline, and zleuther thinks it's still prolly wrong LOL...
Follow the Grassley link above, please. His spokeswoman didn't change the date, but Tuesday she changed the info. She edited Crooks outta the paragraph I had copied exactly, added "Source interviews indicate the [picnic table] individual departed shortly thereafter and was never identified", and added the correction at the bottom, "Initial findings, based on multiple representations from Beaver County law enforcement explaining their text messages from July 13, identified the individual seen at 4:26 p.m. as Thomas Crooks, due to an alleged similar visual appearance. Additional findings and subsequent source interviews indicate this was an unknown individual who was considered suspicious by Beaver County law enforcement. Changes have since been made based on the additional findings, an updated FBI timeline and subsequent source interviews."

It was good to see that addtional safety measures were in place today as President Trump spoke behind a three-sided bullet-proof glass shield at his outdoor rally in Wisconsin. I assume it was trukced in by the DoD/Department of Defense.
My opinion this means either three will proceed to search the perimeter of the AGR complex, outdoors: Sniper Nicol, a Local LEO 1, and a Local LEO 2, divided up like eastside and some of south, westside and some of south, and northside, respectively. Or, Sniper Nicol will go back inside while a Local LEO 1 and a Local LEO 2 will divide up westside plus south, and northside plus east, respectively.Senator Ron Johnson said:

It would be nice to have Local LEO 1’s bodycam of all this but we ain’t gonna get it cuz we know all 12 MP4s that Butler Township Police Lieutenant Matthew Pearson provided, and it’s not there. We know what it would show from 18:09:39 to 18:12:48, I just showed us.
But would it show him speaking to Sniper Nicol, like Senator Johnson’s quote above? My opinion is yes, before 18:09. How much before? Well, that depends on what the heck happened to his car???!!! My opinion is he hopped in, drove west, and inexplicably parked in the upper left corner of the first photo in this post, before 18:09.
I’ve hinted at what I’ma post next, should I do that now or later?

Heard on the radio news this morning that the Assistant Director of the USSS Office of Protective Services has been asked to step down/resign as a result of the assassination attempt review. I guess that's a start.

Sniper took picture of Trump rally shooter, saw him use rangefinder before assassination attempt, source says
The sniper radioed to a command post, according to a local law enforcement officer.

A sniper from a local tactical team...took a picture of the gunman and saw him looking through a rangefinder...[snip, time passes]
The local sniper team called for backup — alerting the command post that the gunman had a backpack and was walking toward the back of the building.
By the time other local officers responded to the backup request, the gunman had scaled the building, positioning himself above and behind the local snipers inside the building, according to the officer.
Two other municipal police officers who heard the call for backup attempted to climb onto the roof.
Above is the photo of the “Two other municipal police officers”, different people than who in my previous post are Local LEO 1 and Local LEO 2, the bold part of the CBS News bit.
Sleuthers wanna know what Sniper Nicol was doing, AND WHERE, after he spoke to Local LEO 1. So please keep in mind, I’m not interested in rating the performance of Local LEO 1 the sergeant. I’m trying to see if what we learn thru his eyes (and others) might reveal about Sniper Nicol.
“I have no contact with the inside..Do you have a number on the inside?” asks Local LEO 1.
And does “I’ve been told that the shooter may be affiliated with AGR” refer to new info he read on his phone? I don't know but maybe it's somewhere between the beginning and the end of the above youtube.
