Exhumation of Bodies Set to Begin on Monday (28-Oct-2013)

The process of identifying two young women murdered in 1968 will begin Monday when a forensic anthropologist starts digging up two graves in Berks County's potter's field.

Coroner Dennis J. Hess said a backhoe will remove about 4 feet of ground from the approximate location where an old map shows the women were buried. Then Dr. Frederick Snow will begin the painstaking task of uncovering the remains at the site off Cedar Top Road in Cumru Township.

Snow will extract DNA, which will be sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification, Hess said.

The remains could be those of two Philadelphia friends who went missing in 1968, he said.

I just saw this article, I'm so glad they're finally moving forward. I'm hoping their map is correct and that the girls are in the two graves that the coroner thinks are in. The map of the graves is not the best, no one can say for sure if any of the graves in the field correspond with the map.

I'm also hoping this whole project will shed some light on the fact that this is a completely bare field, no markers or anything. It's really not the way the deceased should be treated.

So the person who owned the airplane hangar (James Eways) where the UID girls' photos were found was suspected in another pair of murders that happened in Berks County. He ultimately was not tried in exchange for testifying against two others who were involved.

Here is a site that talks more about the murders:

Eways sure lucked out. He also served only five years for shooting and killing a 17-year-old boy that was involved with harassing him. Unbelievable!

He sure did. The home he lived in at the time this happened was an old church that was converted into a house, it was (and still is) typical to drive by there. It's a gorgeous piece of property that's actually for sale right now.

I really wonder if this isn't two of the girls missing from Lake michigan in 1966. I found where a Ralph Largo (must of been SR) was in trouble in the 40's in Pennsylvania. http://smalltownnoir.com/?s=largo This was new castle, PA
Ralph Largo, Jr was a man that was at the beach that day, his aunt and Uncle performed abortions, AND witnesses reported a man resembling him was seen with the girls. Bruhl was from a devout Catholic family.
This is the unidentified female's page http://doenetwork.org/cases/447ufpa.html and this is concerning Ms Bruhl http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bruhl_renee.html

The other unidentified could be either Miller or Blough.

Also, I notice that on the smalltownnoir link it mentions Frank Largo, which is the uncle that performed abortions.

I suppose that could be a possibility and maybe the third body just hasn't been found. I'm not sure that either of the girls in the pictures look that much like Miller or Blough though.

Exhumation of bodies in potter's field begins

Odd that they won't identify who they think these girls are. The do not say they are "sisters" but say they are "friends". They must be onto something and don't want to jeapardize their investigation. Otherwise, I think they would say who they think the girls might be.

I also have lived in this area my entire life. I moved to the Reading area shortly after the bodies were found. I remember many stories of motorcycle gang crimes happening in the area. A relative of my late Husband wrote a book on the Dreamland Murder activities.
Regarding the Stiver girls from Philadelphia, they are sister-in-laws.

This is exciting.. I think with new DNA technology we can finally solve this case and give these girls back their names. The pictures from the Stiver girls case file compared to the pictures found in the hangar are similar in my eyes.

Remains of 2nd Philadelphia woman exhumed from Berks grave

The skeletal remains of a second young woman were exhumed in Berks County.

The exhumation process continued Tuesday in the county's potter's field in Cumru Township, where the two women are believed to be buried.

The two women, originally from Philadelphia, went missing in 1968, and officials said they believe they were murdered in Berks County.

A forensic pathologist unearthed a crucifix Tuesday, a metal plate engraved with the words "Unknown Female" and bones that belonged to a young woman with a bullet hole in her skull.

"That's number two and that is making me very happy," said Dennis Hess, the Berks County coroner, who is working to solve this mystery.

If you go to this website it explains a little more about the Stiver girls.

Has Darlene Polizzi been ruled out?

Not that I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure there is more to the police thinking that the UID's are the Stiver girls than they're releasing. They wouldn't exhume two bodies on a hunch, there has to be more to it. That said, Darlene Polizzi's height, weight, and hair color does fit the description of the first UID girl.

DNA analysis fails to identify two murder victims

A 45-year-old murder mystery in eastern Pennsylvania remains unsolved.

The Reading Eagle (http://bit.ly/Qh0FwV) said testing on the remains of two young women has proved unsuccessful because DNA couldn't be extracted from the victims' hair and bone samples.
