9/16/24 Monday, Bench Trial Day 1: The day's testimony began with first responders being called to the stand, including a Kempton volunteer firefighter as well as several Pennsylvania State Troopers. Then came a string of education staff from 8-year-old Connor Snyder's elementary school, including his teacher, counselor, occupational & speech therapists, as the defense continued to try to determine what Connor could physically be capable of in terms of his motor skills & mental & emotional state at the time.

Bench trial continues on Tuesday, 9/17/24.

In Snyder’s defense, attorney Dennis Charles took a two-pronged approach. He told Johnson that it will be up to the prosecution to prove their theory that Snyder has been lying about her son’s depression and suicidal thoughts. He said they would have to prove that he was unable to set up and execute the suicide himself.

And if they do meet that bar, he said, he is prepared to argue that his client was insane and suffering from disassociation at the time of the murders.

“She has no recollection what she did,” he said, adding that, if she did kill her children, she was unable to know it was wrong.

Charles said Snyder has a long history of mental illness stemming all the way back to when she was sexually abused by a family member from the ages of 5 to 7.

She has suffered identity and abandonment issues, her attorney said. She has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features, borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

here is from Day 2 - not much though

Bench trial continues on Wednesday, 9/18/24.

9/17/24

Testifying for the prosecution on the second day of a bench trial in front of Berks President Judge M. Theresa Johnson, Snyder’s surviving child made it clear he did not believe his mother’s story.

Owen Snyder said his little brother wasn’t suicidal, indicating that claims made by his mother that he had been suffering from bullying at school weren’t true.

“He was a happy-go-lucky kid,” he said. “He always wanted to be doing something. He was always playing with his little sister.”

The picture he painted of his brother was one similar to the one shared by employees of the Kutztown School District on the first day of the trial Monday. Those employees — a teacher, counselor, bus driver and therapists — said Connor was a cheerful child who gave no indications that he was suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts.

That’s why, Owen Snyder said, it came as a shock to him when his mother told him about a month before Connor’s death that the child was struggling with bullying. Owen Snyder said he asked his little brother about his mom’s claims, and that Connor seemed confused.

Connor, according to Owen, said he loved school, riding on the bus and playing with his friends.

“He was always the kid everyone loved,” Owen Snyder said.

Owen Snyder said he had a close relationship with his younger siblings, in particular with Connor. His brother would get excited to see Owen when he would get home from his after-school job, often wanting to play video games with him on his XBox.

That’s why Owen Snyder said he believes Connor would have told him if he was dealing with depression.

He said he also believes that his little brother had physical limitations that would have made setting up the hanging of him and his sister difficult, if not impossible.

Everytime this case hits my mind, I think of Owen and how much he's been through and how much he's lost, at such a young age. I truly hope he's doing as well as can be.

Here's an article for yesterday

Sept. 18, 2024

For the second time this week, people in a Berks County courtroom on Wednesday heard the voice of a woman accused of killing two of her children.

The first time was on Monday, when prosecutors played a recording of the frantic 9-1-1 call Lisa Snyder made on Sept. 23, 2019, in which she claims she has just found her 8-year-old son Connor and 4-year-old daughter Brinley hanged in the basement of her Albany Township home.

On Wednesday, a second recording from that day was played during Snyder’s bench trial in the murder of her two children. This time it was a video recording of a two-hour interview Snyder did with state troopers. She told investigators that she blames Connor for the hangings, claiming he was depressed and suicidal because of ongoing bullying at school.
[.....]
Also on Wednesday, the prosecution called as witnesses a friend of Snyder’s who spoke about conversations in the days and weeks after the hangings; the Children and Youth Services investigator assigned to the case; and Trooper Daniel Wolmer, who testified that Snyder had purchased the dog lead used in the hangings — which could hold 250 pounds, significantly more than the 50 pound limit of a lead she already owned — that morning at Walmart.

The trial will continue Thursday.
