I'm guessing DJ felt a need to relieve himself and he adjusted his path to walk through Katz Plaza to Scott Place to do his business there (alley setting). One problem with doing such a thing in that location is your are not truly alone; the Theater Parking Garage entrance / exit is along that path, as well as an exit for the Encore apartment building and of course, foot traffic from Katz Plaza, Barkers Place (through the pass-thru) and FDB. If a pedestrian or a vehicle interrupted his intention he might then proceed to the river's edge (below street level) to do his business.

Other than the above speculation, I would think the only other viable explanations are suicide or foul play. No evidence has been reported that would lead to concluding the latter explanations.

Your theory makes sense and it's quite possible that it could just have been a horrible accident. The worst part is that he was about a 10 Min walk home from that point. But I guess when you're buzzed you aren't thinking completely clear and for males urinating outside is easily done.

Cadaver dogs hit on a scent just at the base of the Sixth Street Bridge on the city side, which would bolster speculation of DJ going to the river's edge to relieve himself. Once you reach the bottom of the stairway from the Sixth Street Bridge, there is short fencing that prevents you from directly turning left toward the river, but if you really 'had to go' DJ might have attempted to climb / jump over that short fence to get to the edge; that's a recipe for disaster while even mildly drunk / tipsy.

But if cadaver dogs hit there, wouldn't that mean he was dead when he entered the river?

Let's say Dakota went down to the rivers edge to relieve himself - Then what? I'm not a man, but if I was drunk and went down to the river to relieve myself, I would have to unzip my jeans. So let's say I fall in and can't catch my breath...maybe the current was strong and pushed me out. I guarantee you - I'm not going to be zipping up my pants while fighting for my life. The point I'm trying to make here is -I'm wondering if he showed any evidence of that when found?

At some point, drunk, stumbling, and now fallen, once off your feet...you do indeed pass out...whether face down on a mattress or face down in water. It happens. Once off your feet and drunk, you do pass out.

I still can't imagine that a fall from the river's edge would result in death. Even if I was a bit inebriated, you can guarantee I'd be pulling myself out of that water as fast as I went in! Even if I had to paddle along the edge for a grip somewhere--Especially at 23. I'm in my 40s, and I KNOW I'd be up and outta that river STAT! His mom says he was an athletic guy who swam, ran, and biked. A mere "fall" into the river just seems unlikely to cause a death. Even if drunk. And by the picture at Katz Plaza, he appears to be walking at a strong and steady gait.

Good point. I would think it would show that. Unless clothing is ripped or torn off from the currents as was said in the Paul Kochu case.

That's true, his mom said he was a good swimmer. If I ended up in the river somehow - you better believe adrenaline would kick in and I'd be out of there! No matter how drunk you are - adrenaline would take over and your body would fight to stay alive. I don't think for a single second that he willingly put himself into that river. NO WAY!

Robinson police stated that his clothes were intact. Blue Columbia jacket, red hoodie, blue jeans, cell phone, cash, and wallet.

I saw this linked over the weekend and spent a large amount of time reading the many cases, all males, all found in rivers/waterways. Although alcohol was a common factor in each of the stories, there were many troubling similarities - males, drinking with friends, separated from friends, missing, eventually found in water, law enforcement indicate nothing to indicate foul play. However, the absence of "nothing" in repeated instances indicate "something" to me. Joey LaBute's death is very troublesome as no water was found in his lungs. Will be interesting to see what the results are for Dakota. I will also say that I was honestly hoping for a different outcome for Dakota James.

I am now convinced that there is a serial killer in Pittsburgh. So many people have ended up in Pittsburgh rivers after a night of drinking. Dakota was walking in an area that was NOT a straight shot to the river/rivers edge.

I've been reading up on the joey labute case after seeing this. In this case there was also a jumbled "pocket text" received by a family member just like Dakotas dad received. Too many similarities to ignore. Columbus Ohio is a close drive from Pittsburgh also. The FBI needs to start taking all these similarities seriously. Particularly if Dakota ends up with a low level of water in his lungs.
