Personal opinion the gun is most important, he will ditch anything to keep that.

I agree. He has been shown to be able to steal or gather food and clothing easily. Stealing weapons is a lot riskier and more involved. IMO He will be hard pressed to find another situation where a loaded gun is allegedly left unattended in an opened garage, he was insanely "lucky" (for lack of a better word) to happen across that.
