#MontcoPa jury has been deliberating fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith, #Abington couple accused of roles in the fatal beating of Smith's 4 yo son, Tahjir, for just over ONE HOUR now.

Defense lawyers Francis Genovese, who represented Keiff King, & Carrie Allman, who represented Lisa Smith, suggested prosecutors don't have sufficient evidence to support 1st-or 3rd-degree murder convictions. Genovese & Allman argued neither King nor Smith intended to kill Tahjir

“He had no specific intent,” defense lawyer Francis Genovese argued on behalf of Keiff King during his closing statement to #MontcoPa jurors. “There’s no reason for him to have any hatred, ill will or malice toward Tahjir.” King & Lisa Smith accused in fatal beating of 4 yo boy

Defense lawyer Francis Genovese suggested jurors consider lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, which is a death that results from reckless or grossly negligent conduct. Involuntary manslaughter is punishable of up to 5 to 10 yrs in prison.

“My client, Mr. King, was reckless. My client, Mr. King, was negligent in the actions he took that night. That doesn’t make it murder," - defense lawyer Francis Genovese argued on behalf of Keiff King, accused in fatal beating of 4 yo #Abington boy. #MontcoPa Court #trial

Defense lawyer Carrie Allman, who represents Lisa Smith, argued, “Outcome does not equal intent.”

“The evidence presented did not establish intent. What happened to Tahjir that day should not have happened. But that wasn’t what was intended that day,” defense lawyer Carrie Allman argued during her closing argument on behalf of Lisa Smith.

Defense lawyer Carrie Allman argued Lisa Smith & Keiff King tried to discipline 4 yo Tahjir, poorly, but that they had no malice, did not intend to kill & never thought the discipline could lead to death.

“It was discipline that got out of control,” Allman suggested.

But #MontcoPa First Asst. DA Edward McCann Jr. scoffed at the defense suggestions. “This is not discipline gone bad,” McCann argued to jurors at #trial. “They didn’t have a stopping point until Tahjir Smith was dead”

“It was a course of conduct in this case, more than one act over a course of time,” #MontcoPa First Asst. DA Edward McCann Jr. argued to jurors during his closing statement at #trial of Lisa Smith & Keiff King.

“We have two people who were involved in months of abuse of a 4-year-old boy…who was ultimately killed by them,” #MontcoPa First Asst. DA Edward McCann Jr. argued to jurors during his closing statement at #trial of Lisa Smith & Keiff King.

Testimony revealed 4 yo Tahjir Smith suffered bruises, black eyes, broken bones & burns, culminating in alleged Jan. 2018 beating that ultimately ended his life. “It shows you the hardness of heart they had for him, the malice they had for him" #MontcoPa Prosecutor Ed McCann Jr.

“This was a child who was in really, really bad shape. They watched him die,” #MontcoPa First Asst DA Edward McCann Jr. argued to jurors at #trial of Lisa Smith & Keiff King, who are accused of fatally beating Smith's 4 yo son Tahjir.

#MontcoPa First Asst. DA Edward McCann Jr. said 4 yo Tahjir Smith wasn’t a child who saw “monsters” in movies or read about them in books. “He lived with two of them,” McCann argued to jury at #trial of Lisa Smith & Keiff King, who are accused of fatally beating Tahjir

#MontcoPa jury has been deliberating fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith, #Abington couple accused of roles in the fatal beating of Smith's 4 yo son, Tahjir, for just over TWO HOURS now.

#MontcoPa jury weighing fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith have a question for the judge. Lawyers being summoned to the courtroom. I'll let you know what that question is as soon as it's revealed.

#MontcoPa jurors have asked Judge Risa Vetri Ferman to give to them again the legal definition of “reasonable doubt.” Jury of 7 men & 5 women is deciding fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith, who are accused of roles in fatal beating of 4 yo Tahjir Smith

#MontcoPa Judge Risa Vetri Ferman has just re-read the definition of 'reasonable doubt' to the jury weighing fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith. Jurors have returned to deliberation room.

#MontcoPa jurors did not indicate what charge they may have been considering when they sought re-instruction on term "reasonable doubt." They gave no indication where they are in their deliberations.

#MontcoPa jury has been deliberating fates of Keiff King & Lisa Smith, #Abington couple accused of roles in the fatal beating of Smith's 4 yo son, Tahjir, for just over THREE HOURS now.

#BREAKING - There is a #VERDICT at #MontcoPa #trial of Lisa Smith & Keiff King. I’ll let you know what it is as soon as it’s announced!

Lisa Smith & Keiff King arrive in #MontcoPa Court to learn the #verdict at their #trial

#verdict - Keiff King CONVICTED OF first degree murder #MontcoPa

#MontcoPa VERDICT - Lisa Smith GUILTY of first degree murder in beating death of her 4 yo son Tahjir

An #Abington mother, Lisa Smith, & her boyfriend, Keiff King, characterized as “monsters” by #MontcoPa prosecutors, bowed their heads as a jury determined they intentionally killed the woman’s 4-year-old son during a prolonged beating.

The #MontcoPa jury of 7 men & 5 women deliberated more than 3 hours before convicting Lisa Smith, 20, & Keiff Devine King, 27, of charges of first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child & conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 2018, death of Smith’s 4 yo son, Tahjir.

Relatives of Lisa Smith & Keiff King wept as the verdicts were announced after an emotional four-day #trial in #MontcoPa Court. “Oh no! No!” one woman shouted her disapproval of the verdicts before sheriff’s deputies escorted her from the courtroom.

#MontcoPa Judge Risa Vetri Ferman will formally sentence Lisa Smith & Keiff King later this year. However, with the first-degree murder convictions Smith and King each face mandatory life imprisonment.

Lisa Smith & Keiff King appeared stone-faced & showed no outward emotion as they were escorted from the #MontcoPa courtroom by sheriff’s deputies and they declined to comment about the #murder #verdicts.

They were "under stress" and "didn't mean to kill him". So, beating a child and scalding him is perfectly understandable. After all, the FOUR YEAR OLD did SPILL CEREAL!!!!

Geez, didn't these folks have a dog? Seriously...what is with people? Put them both in jail.

I don’t get it. “Under stress” - sure, maybe you raise your voice over the spilled cereal in frustration. You don’t beat your child until they die. That’s intent. That’s “meaning to kill him”.

What I have seen about abusive parents/people, is that they perceive that they have little to no control over anything in their lives...so, they "hyper" control the one thing, a child, dog, whatever...

This poor kid was just their punching bag.

Good! It's time parents realize that beating a child who's a fraction of their size opens them up to first degree murder charges if that child dies. IMO it should be a given in every case - no more hiding behind weak excuses. This case was not about involuntary manslaughter, Tahjir was systematically beaten over months; his mother admitted it, his relatives saw it.

And to the relatives who wept and cried out - stuff it. Who among you cried for Tahjir?

It took less than a year for the boyfriend to move in and together with the mother murder an innocent little boy. Rot in jail.
Tahjir, just a month from his fifth birthday, had 10 fractures on eight ribs and deep scars on his back that likely came from a belt whipping. Relatives had noticed a black eye. His mother admitted to dragging the child across the carpet in the past, leaving him with rug burn.
...
And on the day Tahjir died, prosecutors said, the abuse went even further.

The child’s bottom was severely swollen from having been beaten with a sandal dozens of times, said Ian Hood, a forensic pathologist who conducted Tahjir’s autopsy. The violence was so severe, he said, that fatty tissue ruptured in the child’s body, releasing toxins that leached into the bloodstream, and eventually caused the boy to go into shock.

Tahjir’s brain, too, was swollen, Hood said, both ears were bruised, and a shoulder displayed a fresh second-degree burn.
‘He was brutalized.’ Abington couple guilty of murder in beating death of boy, 4
