Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected the next pope. He is the first non-European pope.

The decision came after the fifth ballot cast by the 115 cardinals since the papal conclave began Tuesday.

The new pope succeeds Pope Benedict XVI, who became the first pope to resign in hundreds of years. He stepped down February 28, citing advanced age.

The new pope becomes the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

So happy for a latin american pope! And he takes the name Francis. Tears are flowing! Happy and hopeful!
 
He can't exactly give up this residence, but I bet he takes every ostentatious thing out of his new bedroom.
 
Just when I thought I got away....they've sucked me back in, here I am praying with him.
 
I am hopeful that his choice of regnal name, in honor of St Francis of Assisi, signals a renewed attention to social justice, especially for 'the least of these'. :please:

I'm encouraged by the fact they didn't pick another "scholar" for pope, this is a man who is a pastor of the people--and that's where the focus needs to be.

CNN reported that Pope Francis was the "runner up" during the Conclave during which Pope Benedict was elected. I'm pleased to see someone from South America.
 
From the life of St. Francis:
Later he was in the Chapel of San Damiano and heard God's voice speak clearly to him from the crucifix saying, "Francis, Go and rebuild my Church, which you can see has fallen into ruin." Francis believed initially that the call was to a literal, physical rebuilding of the Church...only later did he realize the call was to a spiritual rebuilding.
