I am happy to help out as best I can.
I dont have information on bone trauma, just the size and description of the surgical scars. If you get x-rays of the limbs I may be able to help more.
The right leg had a 3.5″ scar on the posterior calf muscle.
This is most likely a calf muscle lengthening procedure performed bilaterally, for example a Strayer or Vulpius procedure (ie a Gastrocnemius recession). It is generally performed for tight calf muscles that are the result of congenital causes (cerebral palsy in kids, congenitally tight calf muscles that cause toe walking as well).
In adults there are dozens of related causes to indicate this procedure. In 1996, I would need to know the area of the country that this victim was to give you a better idea as to whether there was a doctor in the area who might have been doing these procedures routinely.
A 1″ linear, L shaped scar on the shin (I need to know where on the shin to limit the possibilities and if there were any knee, hip, thigh or groin scars)
And a .5″ scar on the medial ankle (likely a percutaneously placed screw for an external fixation or temporary clamp placed in surgery).
The left leg had a similar 3.5″ scar on the inner side of the calf muscle (calf muscle lengthening again), and a 2″ surgical scar with adjacent suture scars on the medial left ankle (this is usually going to be a scar from an ankle fracture repair but given the calf muscle lengthening bilaterally, it could be a scar from a derotation osteotomy as a child).
Either this person was in a multi-trauma with bilateral lower extremity fracture and later developed the calf muscle contractures, or
she was a child born with cerebral palsy or some other neuromuscular disease and had a series of procedures performed to adjust the limb deformities as they grew.
If you catch the killer please let me know.
