I don't think he said he developed this software, only that he is part of the open source community that does develop freeware...

That makes zero sense to me and the IT person on the jury will jump all over it if he was quoted accurately.

But in fairness to the defense, Autopsy being open source doesn't make it bad any more than SpyBot being free makes it bad.

What makes it questionable/unreliable is that it hasn't been validated scientifically (as Juan pointed out). Any "Data Scientist" would know that's the gold standard.
