The Tupolev Tu-) is a three-engine medium-rangenarrow-body airliner designed in the mid-1960s

A workhorse of Soviet and (subsequently) Russian airlines for several decades, it carried half of all passengers flown by Aeroflot and its subsidiaries (137.5 million/year or 243.8 billion passenger km in 1990),

remaining the standard domestic-route airliner of Russia and former Soviet states until the mid-2000s.

It was exported to 17 non-Russian airlines and used as head-of-state transport by the air forces of several countries.

cruising speed of 975 kilometres per hour

he Tu-154civilian aircraft in use and has a range of 5,280 kilometres (3,280 mi).

Capable of operating from unpaved and gravel airfields

it was widely used in the extreme Arctic conditions

designed for a 45,000 hr service life (18,000 cycles) but capable of 80,000 hrs with upgrades, it is expected to continue in service until 2016, although noise regulations have restricted flights to western Europe and other regions.

In January 2010, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot announced the retirement of its Tu-154 fleet after 40 years,

Since 1968 there have been 39 fatal incidents .....most of which were caused either by factors unrelated to the aircraft, or by its extensive use in demanding conditions.[SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4]

The Tu-154 is described as having an average (or better than expected) safety record considering its length of service and heavy use in demanding conditions where other airliners are unable to operate.[SUP][4][/SUP]

9% of all Tu-154 losses have occurred in Iran

  • Air Crew is the 1979 action film revolving around the exploits of a Soviet Tu-154 crew on an international flight, the first Soviet film in the disaster genre.
journalists, military personnel and musicians were on board the flight.

Thanks CARIIS it looks like it may be a military flight from your link:

"The Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviation) told RIA Novosti that the flight was “not civilian”. According to sources cited by Russia's LifeNews, the plane had allegedly been heading to Latakia province in Syria."

hummm just learned this - thought they quit making them decades ago.

The last serial Tu-154 was delivered to the Russian Defense Ministry on 19 February 2013 from the Aviakor factory, equipped with upgraded avionics, .... 311 aircraft were built, including VIP versions, a few of them are still in use.

Something is weird here! We quit FLYING our equivalent 13 years ago! So does this mean they have been making it all this time? That cant be!!

Interesting and odd - never heard of such a thing! Shall have to explore this later!

It was a mid 60's design - what on earth would make them go back to making them??

I know they are having some issue launching their new design - but to go back a retool a factory to make a 1960's plane is just , well to be honest , does not make a whole bunch of sense!!

Strange indeed , will find out more -- really weird imo

Confused!

In my mind that really just changed this. At first I thought my god I did not know were still using em. Thought god its gotta be 50 something !! I thought why on earth would the military be flying it!!

But with learning this it will be interesting to see date of manufacture. We will see, I am however, still in shock (!) if this one was not one of the one mentioned above -

As of 20 February 2011, in Iran, all the remaining numbers of the Tu-154 were grounded after two recent incidents

Usually how it works is industrialised folks make em, use em,phase em out, and then third world countries fly them around till they crash!!

God thats funny on Wiki there is a some airline where they are not really sure how many of them are flying!! Goodness!

They say 52 still in use wiki linked earlier

In flight break up ????????????????????????

Such a tragedy. This is only just breaking news here in Australia. Plane is still missing not reported as crashed yet. Thankyou Cariis for bringing us up to date.

Does this sound , shall I say interestingly worded, or am I being a nut?

Feel free to enlighten me if I am being a nut!

Just struck me:

"went missing as it was manoeuvring over Russia's territorial waters"

quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

I was hoping they would find the plane but not crashed, so sad to hear that it is crashed and with military musicians :( Not a good Christmas for their families.

Territorial waters

Territorial waters or a territorial sea as defined by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,[1] is a belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from the baseline (usually the mean low-water mark) of a coastal state. The territorial sea is regarded as the sovereign territory of the state, although foreign ships (civilian) are allowed innocent passage through it, or transit passage for straits; this sovereignty also extends to the airspace over and seabed below. Adjustment of these boundaries is called, in international law, maritime delimitation.

The term "territorial waters" is also sometimes used informally to refer to any area of water over which a state has jurisdiction, including internal waters, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone and potentially the continental shelf.
