Australia Samantha Murphy, 51, last seen leaving her property to go for a run in the Canadian State Forest, Ballarat, 4 Feb 2024 *Arrest* #11

But I have been wondering what the tool is in the male police officer's hand. I wish I knew what equipment they use in forensic investigations.

Looks to be a head torch to me, you can see the straps against the person’s leg.

Something which can detect human blood, or fingerprints?

I dont post often, but I read all of your comments, and I am wondering if it possible that his fingerprints are still detectable on her phone case. Any thoughts?
Hey Maisie, I saw this article which briefly mentioned DNA on the phone, so I’d say it’s not impossible.

“Given the phone’s submersion in water, any DNA would likely be degraded, though forensic specialists would still attempt to recover any possible evidence urgently, with results expected within days.”

  1. Is it possible to have 'parental controls' on a phone? Like, the kid doesn't know it, but the parent can see the URL of every site accessed.
  2. I think the trouble is also that a lot of parents don't bother. Just as when TV was the babysitter.
Hi @JLZ,
  1. Yes, monitoring / reporting websites a child / children have visited is a common feature in most child safety software.
  2. Sadly, this is one of the downsides & it's true (ioe).
  3. Regarding "the kid doesn't know it", the majority of people we've discussed this issue with recommend discussing with child/children, it's respectful but still positions 'parental-responsibility-authority' & the nature of the software means the kid can't remove it, so, if they want to surf, they play by the parent's rules.
Moo.
Added 3.

Thank you! I had somehow missed this article.

Are we sure the parents of PS and Sam and Mick Murphy have never crossed paths ?
I can’t believe in a small community , similar schools they never have
We aren't sure but I'm sure LE would have a fair idea by now. Ballarat (population approx 118,000) is a major regional city , I've lived in smaller regional cities (population 30,000) and known people that have lived there their whole life (a 50+yr old) and are very immersed in the community and they still meet new people that have lived in the same town all their life too but their paths had never crossed, so it's not too far fetched that they never directly crossed path, doesn't mean if PS was in the local newspaper regarding footy that SM or MM didn't read the article for example, doesn't mean they knew or know him or his family directly.

Police said there was no link between the victim/her family
and the alleged perp.

"Detectives from the missing persons squad arrested Stephenson,
who they said

was not linked to the Murphy family,

at about 6 am on Wednesday."

I couldn't agree more!
7 km in 60/50 mins is SLOW run.

It’s really not, when adjusted for age and gender, and the fact that we don’t know if or how often she walked. Did she start sprinting right out of her driveway? Or did she walk for a bit to warm up as many runners do?

Remember though she was training for a marathon, so she wouldn't be wanting to walk too much into her run, she was an experienced runner, a very slow runner can do that in 46 min, so Sam being a regular runner should have done it around the 20 m mark, even 27 mark. One hour is slow for that run, and not really what Sam had set out to achieve that morning. Unless, as I previously said, It was a set-up by someone else to make out Sam had done that run and that she was not murdered elsewhere, to keep police searching the bush.

Sounds complicated and risky. Some data retrieved, phone/biometric, indicated a significant change in Sam’s status quo at Mt Clear and the police say the incident happened at Mt Clear. The phone wasn’t destroyed at Mt Clear as it’s been found in tact. So the likelihood is that she made it to a turn around point at Mt Clear but no further and the data reflects that.
The length of her journey or mode from home to Mt Clear could be inconsequential.
The phone in the dam is possibly opportunistic, careless or a red herring.

Police say they aren’t connected and that’d be true, even superficially (ie as far as anyone apart from PS and SM know). When people know each other the relationship helps explain the motive a little better. I’ve wondered if they did know each other somehow and no-one else was aware. Why would he allegedly attack her, given the age difference, the time of day and season (higher risk of witnesses in the morning in Summer), her physique (she wouldn't have been completely defenceless) and the likelihood that she would be missed very soon. Maybe it was opportunistic or spontaneous. Maybe they argued or she caught him doing something weird.

Someone else could have walked to Mount Clear, that's why it has taken them one hour to get there, wearing Sam's watch to throw off the investigation, then they have got into a vehicle and driven off at Mount Clear. She could have easily been murdered prior. There is no CCTV footage given to the media of her actually running past anywhere going into the bush, and that still photo looks like she is walking up the driveway and not going out, and they still can't find her body in the bush

I’m getting your valid point that there’s (as far as we know and we don’t know much) no images or evidence of her leaving her driveway, or even being at Mt Clear that morning.
The police know where Sam went and it makes no sense for them to withhold info about her known whereabouts especially when they are relying on public help including a lot of cctv footage.

IMO jealousy (possibly jealous of one of his associates having a friendship with/liking Samantha.)

I don't think the age difference matters one little bit. Plenty of younger guys have attacked older women.
Even a 10 year old boy has been charged with sexual assault, common assault, and assault occasioning bodily harm whilst in company, against a 24 year old woman just a month ago, in broad daylight, at 10am. Link

And Sam's fitness level certainly did not help her to be alive today.

imo
