In each case, law enforcement will use a variety of resources to help get a clearer idea of what happened.
In the case of six-year-old Faye Swetlik of Cayce who disappeared Monday afternoon, resources have included canines, FBI agents and even a helicopter.
Bischoff says these resources along with community tips will be critical in the search to find her.

He says a child's age can impact the difficulty level of the investigation.
"It becomes quite difficult at times when they're trying to piece these puzzles together, if you will, for such a young child, young vulnerable child," Bischoff said.

His office has deployed resources, including an investigator to aid in the search.
Both of these vehicles have since been towed with police escort from the family's home. #FayeSwetlik remains missing tonight. We're entering the 29th hour. #missing #MissingChild #sctweets

Wesley said she went to pick up her other kids from middle school around 3:25 p.m. At that time she didn’t see anything suspicious in the neighborhood. She said she also doesn’t remember seeing Faye outside when she drove by.
THIS JUST IN: Investigators say there's no evidence yet that Faye Swetlik was abducted. The parents said they don't know what happened to her. WLTX News19
I spoke one on one with Faye’s grandmother. She says Faye’s nickname is ‘Faybe’ and they are ready to have her home. She says a piece of her heart is missing and she doesn’t know what to do. @wachfox
An #AmberAlert can't go into effect unless law enforcement fully believes the child was abducted. There is no clear evidence Faye was definitely taken. But concern is high. She's only six. It has been 30 hours. A hotline is set up. Again: 803-205-4444.
After she's hopefully found safe and sound, a discussion might want to happen about creating something that makes ALL cases of missing kids -- especially when they're 6-years old -- a high priority. Phone alarms and highway signs. A red alert-type feel.
