Exactly!

A better, more peculiar anomaly to ponder is:
When the only information about the shooter reported was his gender, age and a description of the clothes he was wearing, how did Roof's sister decipher that the shooter was her brother and was so confident in this belief that she called law enforcement on Wednesday night?

Again, at the point she called law enforcement the only information reported about the shooter is what I listed above.

It's odd to say the least...

DR had supposedly told one of his friends that he was going to 'do something ' on Wednesday. I wonder if he made a similar statement to his sister? If so, and she heard the description, she would probably know it was him. JMO

Why do you think outdoor photos would be more difficult? It is the same as indoors, except with a flash. He probably had many "takes" prior to uploading them.

The outdoor photos are consistent with photos that were pointed and shot by a photographer. If he did take those pictures himself he would have needed to have a tripod, and it would have taken many attempts to get himself centered in the shot. Anybody can take a selfie of their crotch, but taking a distant shot of their entire body requires a tripod and a timer.

Perhaps all suspects are not treated the same. From the Charlotte Observer (a better than average newspaper, I'd reckon):
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article24952345.html

"In Shelby, the FBI handled Roof’s initial questioning, Ledford said. Shelby police’s lone conversation with the mass-murder suspect was about food. Earlier in the day, Roof had bought water and chips at a south Charlotte gas station. Now he was hungry. Police bought him food from a nearby Burger King, Ledford said."

Personally, I'm not opposed to LE buying food for a suspect, if they think it will help them with rapport or gaining a confession later, and custody is also about taking care of someone. I do wonder how universal this practice is.

I'm not judging, but I'm wondering.

it's common where I live

every camera has a timer now, including phones, ipods, tablets etc. and tripods that fit into phones can be bought at the dollar store but failing that, just setting the phone up on any flat surface (windowsill, crates, planters) or even on a charging dock could work

Late in the evening of the shooting, the cops had a description:

"Suspect in shooting on Calhoun St is a w/m approx 21 slender small build...."

When the issue was raised as to how the cops already knew his age before any ID had been made, people pointed out that the cops probably got his car's license plate number from the church parking lot video to make the ID. But now they are saying the car had phony plates:

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150623/PC16/150629721
The South Carolina plates on the car Roof was driving turned out to be stolen from a 1995 Mazda out of Little River Inlet, according to radio communications.

So the question is raised again: how did they already know he was 21 before anybody IDed him(his father and uncle IDed him to cops the next morning, after the surveillance video stills had been released to the media)?

His sister notified authorities the same day.
It was Roof’s sister, Amber, who called authorities after seeing the surveillance photo of her brother on television, said law enforcement officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

They probably knew he was 21 because there was a survivor from the Bible meeting. He most likely told them he was 21 or it was estimated by whatever he told them about himself.

They never said that they 'knew' -- the estimated his age at 21 -- that's why they said 'approx[imately]'. It just turned out that they were correct.

Actually the very first reports said he was exactly 21; then it became "approximately 21", then it became "early 20s."

@ValenciaWicker @ABCNews4 Very precise age given. Where does the info come from?

@moiskd @ABCNews4 all info given from Charleston Police @CharlestonPD"

His sister notified authorities the same day.
The very first photos were released in the police news conference at 6am the next morning. Thus, based on what they saw on TV, none of his relatives had the opportunity to rat him out before that time.

Then shouldn't she be prosecuted for not doing anything to alert law enforcement beforehand or at least trying to get her brother placed on a mental health hold?

Agreed. I'm sure that, since he was new to the Bible study grip, during the initial getting to know you small talk someone probably asked him if he was a student at the university and if/when he said no someone probably asked his age.

Ethel Lance Remembered as Funerals Begin for Charleston Church Victims

Grandchildren offered loving tributes on Thursday to a 70-year-old woman who was killed in the church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina — the first of the funerals for the nine victims.

Najee Washington holds a photo of her grandmother Ethel Lance, one of the nine people killed in Wednesday's shooting at Emanuel AME Church, as she stands outside her home Friday, June 19, 2015, in Charleston, S.C. "She cared for everyone. She took care of people. She would give her last to anyone," said Washington. "That's what she was and that's what she'll always be." David Goldman / AP

(snip)
Lance was a mother of five, a grandmother of seven and a great-grandmother of four. Her grandchildren recalled how she pushed them to wake up early so they could succeed, and how she always had grits and bacon on the table first thing.

"She can be a symbol for love," said one grandson. Brandon Risher. "Hate is powerful, but love is more powerful."

At our local jail they give them bologny sandwiches, but it's a lot larger than Shelby, so I guess they keep the food on hand here, and play as they go there.

One of Roof's friends did say he had a tripod. I just read it last night, probably in one of the newest Daily Mail articles.

I can find no such information in any of the Daily Mail articles, however in this article his friend says that Roof asked him to take one of the pictures for him.

Justin said that a few weeks ago Dylann came to him with a Stars and Stripes flag and asked him to take a picture of him with it burning, He refused.

"The Meek brothers said that they had not heard Dylann speak about any white supremacists groups who had inspired him and did not say he was working with anyone on his plot.

They also thought that Dylann had a tripod for his camera, which he borrowed off his mother, and that he liked to take his own pictures, though he did not like anyone taking his."

And, an added bonus!

The Meek brothers said they thought that Dylann could have written his manifesto himself as he had a laptop and a tablet and spent a lot of time on the Internet - and believed everything that was in it."

Its actually a very interesting article and makes me very curious about the Meek boys and what their story is. Not in a collusion sense.

I don't know. I guess it depends upon what exactly he told her. My heart goes out to her because my brother had an onset of schizophrenia at age 20. He just fell apart in a very messy and ugly way, and out of the blue. We were so confused by his rants and his actions.

We called the police several times and not much ever happened. Basically we were told to call them AFTER he did something. He used to say he was going to kill Johnny Carson because Johnny was talking to him from the tv and sending the KGB out to look for my brother. Eventually he did get arrested at the NBC studios. And that got him a 3 day 5150. That was it. :sigh:
He is now 59 and has never harmed anyone, thank goodness.
