What's next for Alex Murdaugh?

A total of 12 civil suits ― 11 in state court, and one federal ― have been filed against Murdaugh after an alleged decade-long, multi-county financial and drug-related crime spree in which he allegedly stole more than $8.7 million from his clients and other attorneys.

Murdaugh has signed confessions of judgement in some of these cases, and to date only one civil case, the Mallory Beach wrongful death suit, is scheduled for trial: in Hampton County beginning Aug. 14.

Judge Hall is currently considering a motion for summary judgement by a co-defendant in that trial, Gregory M. Parker Inc., the owner of the Parkers convenience store which allegedly sold some of the alcohol involved in the boat case.

Parker is asking the court to dismiss him and his business from the case and let the claim stand against Murdaugh alone, arguing that his store employees did not violate the law and are not responsible because they were duped by Murdaugh's underage son using a valid ID. The Greenville News will have more on that story later this week, and Judge Hall is expected to rule on that motion by May 26.

Murdaugh is also facing 104 remaining criminal charges, but court dates have not been set for those cases.
Maybe he's going for a Guiness record.

Most pockets picked..

SC Judge says Murdaugh attorneys can't use 401k for appeal. Ruling soon on boat crash.

If disgraced former attorney Richard "Alex" Murdaugh is to proceed with plans to appeal his recent murder convictions and double life sentences, he must find an alternate way to pay for his legal defense ― or rely on a public defender.

South Carolina circuit court Judge Daniel Hall filed an order Friday denying a motion request by Murdaugh's legal defense team to use any more of Murdaugh's own money to pay for his criminal appeal.

Murdaugh, who was convicted March 2 in the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and younger son, Paul, and sentenced to consecutive life sentences, filed a notice of appeal of that conviction on March 9.

Attorneys: Murdaugh has a constitutional right to choose his lawyers

On March 21, Murdaugh's legal team, led by Richard Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, filed a motion "for payment of attorney's fees and costs from untainted funds" from a receivership that has been established when the courts seized Murdaugh's assets in light of his 100-plus criminal charges and the dozen lawsuits filed against him.

Oooo, I just love that wording by AM's legal team, that they want to be paid with "untainted funds" !!!!!! JMO, just so !

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh had many around the world tuning in, and it put a spotlight on the small city of Walterboro. Now two months after the verdict, people are traveling from near and far to get a free tour of the Colleton County Courthouse.

It all started almost immediately after the trial for Alex Murdaugh ended in March, when people started gathering on the grounds of the Colleton County Courthouse to take photos.

Colleton County Courthouse staff invited them in and were happy to answer their questions. Before they knew it, bailiffs were conducting 10 tours a day.

People have traveled from all over the world to come and see where the trial took place and take tours, including from Nova Scotia and England.

“They want to see where the holding cell was where Alex Murdaugh was held during the day,” Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill said. “They want to see the witness stand, where the jury sat, where the prosecution sat, the defense people sat, the jury room.”

"You can't make this stuff up".....:p
No, "you can't make this stuff up" !

I love the legal language trying to "make nice" !

In an earlier missive a month or so ago, the lawyers wrote that AM couldn't easily participate in one of the other upcoming trials (federal fraud charges, IIRC) due to his, um, "carceral circumstances" ! :D

Alex Murdaugh's attorneys have filed a new motion asking the judge to reconsider giving them access to the disgraced attorney's money.

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (Court TV) – A South Carolina judge has denied a motion from a convenience store requesting a summary judgment on a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a boat accident involving convicted killer Alex Murdaugh‘s son.

Paul Murdaugh was indicted before his death on charges he was drunk while driving a boat that crashed, killing Mallory Beach in 2019. Before Murdaugh was tried on the charges, he was shot and killed by his father, Alex Murdaugh, who was also convicted for the murder of his wife and Paul’s mother, Maggie.

And it goes on:

Federal officials on Wednesday named convicted South Carolina killer Alex Murdaugh and one of his alleged accomplices, Cory Fleming, in a scheme involving the theft of some $4 million in insurance proceeds.

Fleming has also agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to public records filed Wednesday morning.

Fleming, Murdaugh’s former law school classmate and a suspended Beaufort lawyer, was charged with violating federal fraud laws in connection with a scheme involving the unlawful diverting of insurance proceeds to Murdaugh and away from the rightful owners.

Murdaugh was named throughout the eight-page charging document, but only Fleming had formal charges lodged against him.
