Alex Murdaugh indicted on 22 charges including fraud

Updated: MAY 24, 2023 / 11:53 AM CDT

(NewsNation) — Alex Murdaugh, already convicted of murdering his wife and son, is now facing 22 charges including wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.

A grand jury voted to indict Murdaugh on the financial charges, alleging he took part in three different schemes to get money and property from his clients. At the time the alleged fraud took place, Murdaugh was serving as a personal injury attorney in Hampton, South Carolina.

Prosecutors held off on prosecuting Murdaugh for his financial crimes until the murder trial was completed. The case captured national attention for its dramatic twists and turns, including allegations that Murdaugh paid a hitman to murder him after the deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son Paul.

“Alex (Murdaugh) has been cooperating with the U.S. Attorneys’ Office and federal agencies in their investigation of a broad range of activities,” Murdaugh’s attorneys state Sen. Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, said in a statement. “We anticipate that the charges brought today will be quickly resolved without a trial. “

Fleming, Murdaugh’s former law school classmate, was also charged with violating federal fraud laws in connection with the scheme, which involved the unlawful diverting of insurance proceeds to Murdaugh and away from the rightful owners.

Fleming is expected to plead guilty at 2 p.m. Thursday in Charleston’s federal court before Judge Richard Gergel.

Yes! Finally!!
Overjoyed about AM's scum-buddy, Cory Fleming's, guilty plea

Fleming has not yet been sentenced, and a federal magistrate judge on May 25 released him on unsecured bond, allowing him to travel throughout South Carolina and Georgia without posting bail. His defense attorney, Deborah Barbier, said he was surrendering his law license in those states “effective this week.”
