COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Special Victims Unit Investigators with the Columbia Police Department are working to locate a missing 21-year-old USC student.

Samantha Josephson was last seen by friends between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. this morning on the 700 block of Harden Street.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., Josephson was seen on surveillance video getting into a dark vehicle, possibly a newer model Chevy Impala.

Josephson is described as being white, 145 lbs and 5’7” tall. She has long brown hair and brown eyes.

Friends Search For Missing University of South Carolina Student

According to one of Josephson’s friends who spoke with us on condition of anonymity, the political science major is said to have gotten into a car shortly after 2:00 p.m. EDT but “then her Uber was cancelled.”

“Her phone was tracked to a house in the Rosewood (neighborhood) but she wasn’t there when (her) friends checked in,” the friend told us.

Josephson’s friends also checked in with local hospitals but there was no record of her being admitted anywhere in the city.

So it appears that she might have got into the car seen on the surveillance camera thinking that it was the Uber she was waiting for? Oh that is very scary!! What great friends she has though, they are doing a great job sleuthing to find her!

21-year-old USC student reported missing, last seen in Five Points

According to police, Samantha Josephson was last seen by friends between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Friday at 715 Harden St. in Five Points.

“When she didn’t show up at her downtown residence and didn’t answer repeated phone calls, her friends became concerned and notified CPD,” police said in a statement.

Josephson is a political science major from Robbinsville, New Jersey, according to close friend Jordyn Spencer.

On Friday night, Spencer was in Five Points handing out Josephson’s photo, asking for any help finding her or the dark-colored car (possible a Chevrolet Impala) that she was last seen getting into shortly after 2 a.m.

Spencer said she and other friends who were with Josephson on Thursday night and believe the USC senior got into the wrong car after calling a ride share service.

“We’re making sure everyone is checking their (ride share service car) before they get in,” Spencer said.

Josephson is set to graduate in May and go to Drexel University in Philadelphia for law school, Spencer said.

Posts about Josephson being missing are spreading over social media. A post by Spencer has already garnered over 600 shares as of Friday night.

Missing USC Student From NJ Has Died: Family

She's from NJ and was set to graduate in May, heading to law school in Philly.

Wrong car, it seems, while waiting for ride share.

"Jordyn Spencer, one of Samantha's friends, said the group believed that Josephson got into the wrong vehicle after calling for a ride share service, according to The State.

Josephson was a senior political science major who was supposed to graduate in May, according to The State. She was preparing to go to Drexel University law school in Philadelphia."

ETA Uber and Lyft are usually safe and cars can be monitored as they near the pick up point. In fact, a time is given and updated as the car approaches pickup. Drivers are rated and also users are provided with his/her description. But I can see this as an opportunity for someone with evil intentions, looking for a potential client out on the street waiting. Sad. And JMO. Be safe people.

So a murderer was just hanging around outside of bars/restaurants hoping a young girl would mistake his car for her Uber? Really??? Wow. There’s no hope for any of us if that’s what happened. This poor girl was headed to law school. :(

Someone may have been driving around looking or it may have been simply random opportunity. I'd say in a college town, women standing out on the street late at night are possibly waiting for a taxi or an Uber.

I'm confused as to why she may have mistaken the car for the one she was potentially waiting for, if this is what happened. I assume the ride share company and driver she had called have been questioned, or will be. One article above states her Uber request was cancelled after she got into the car pictured. Did someone just offer her a ride and she accepted, cancelling her request after that?

More info will come out eventually. I'm glad the car was caught on camera and I hope the person is caught right away.
