I don't think people realize how common it is for people to run from cops. They see the cops show up at a party or club, and they scatter. They get pulled over and realize they have a warrant and will go to jail, and boom! they get a trapped feeling and before they even realize they are going to run, they run! Cops are used to this. They are trained to deal with it. It's not uncommon and really, no big deal. moo

I can agree to a certain extent dodie20 - but the part about cops are used to this, and are trained to deal with it isn't making sense these days. It is common for people to run and should be no big deal - so what's going on? Why are cops shooting at people left, right and center?

Is it me or are male cops doing all the shooting at people on the run these days? Why no female cops? Have to think they are too smart for this. Jmo.

When the cop says "stop or I'll shoot", instinct would tell me to stop.

A lot of people do.
It is instinct to run from pain.
It is instinct to have a fight or flight response to a taser.

If you RUN from a taser the pain will stop faster.
If you remain there the pain continues.
Running from a taser can be a human instinct, fight or flight response. :twocents:

Why run at all? I really don't understand that.

On NPR today, a guest noted that Timothy McVeigh and other very dangerous felons have been caught as a result of a traffic stop.

Another point worth considering is the number of police officers who have been shot and killed while conducting traffic stops, as well as how many high speed chases and other dangerous situations occur as a result of suspects fleeing and attempting to elude police officers.

I don't know the answers. There has to be some kind of social contract that law enforcement and the public can both abide by. Cops work for the people, enforcing the laws that are enacted by legislators - who are elected by the citizens.

If a person's first instinct was to run, that will override the 'instinct' to stop when told to stop. It's fight or flight.

Where has there been a coverup, in your opinion?

The transmissions to dispatch were correct? His follow up report was correct? The video matches the transmissions and reports?

You are following the story, right?

Wow, post of the day imo Gin.

I can't understand either how LE can shoot anyone at will, and in the back no less. The cover up says even LE knows it's not OK - just that they will get away with it. Pandering to them only makes it worse.

People are going to run from cops - everyday, everywhere. Deal with it - in a nonlethal manner, it's part of what to expect. Geeez.

It seems to me a more sensible lesson to be learned is that people who run from cops just might get shot and killed. Cops have always been allowed to use their judgment and as this case shows, cops don't always have good judgment.

Oh dear god no. No no nonono.

That statement sent chills down my arms.

I see no reason that this has escalated to where we now are. The guy did scuffle with the cop, I saw it on the phone video. The guy who took the video, plus another witness has said they scuffled. The ownership of the car was questionable, and the victim had a warrant out on him for failure to pay child support. But the cop didn't need to shoot the man 8 times, and has been arrested and charged with murder. That is the remedy. The suspect has been arrested. But still all this drama.
OMG, let's PROTEST, again. Yeah, it's always so successful in getting results. Next, I'm sure there will be distruction of property, fires, and more people injured.
The media has been very selective in what they show, and if it comes out that the car was stolen, the family will say that's just to disparage the victim. On and on. My brother lives in Charleston, and yes, it is a breeding ground for crime. When we go there, the doors are locked, we don't drive thru certain neighborhoods and only frequent businesses in the more upscale areas. It is what it is.
The man should not be dead, but the cop is arrested and charged.

Yes, I am. All is not as it initially appeared, which IMO was the construct of an attorney and a PR guy who are suing for a % of the financial recompense, and media that wants a hot story to report on without much work beyond free commentary on how outrageous it is.

Assuming the community will riot and destroy property is really discriminatory IMHO. The family has asked that Rev Sharpton stay away. The community seems to be reacting quite well to the events.

Have not seen a confirmation of a warrant for child support payments. CS owing has been confirmed by family etc, but a warrant for it has not. Imo, Scott only thought that would come up in the traffic stop.

Ok but that attorney was acquired by Slager and we can't hold the whole department responsible for what media reports. They did what they were supposed to do. The first response should be to accept the report, read it, and respond. They don't automatically doubt what the officer reports until they have had time to read it. JMHO.

I just don't see evidence of an attempted cover up here.

Has there been ANY report or evidence this car was stolen? I see people making little references to questioning whether he actually owned the car, implying it could have been stolen? Where is this information coming from?
