With respect this is a blogger's opinion piece, she mentioned but failed to provide any links to the actual threats made in news article comments or proof that any of the protesting parents made any of those threats. I honestly don't see how continuing to fuel the fire, whipping up even more outrage, fomenting email campaigns and the like is helpful to the child or her parents at this point.

Do we KNOW for sure what the parents were told their kids would have to do? I'd LOVE to see the initial letter that went out to them since we've had reports of everything from mouthwashing to lysol wipes, we've had school authorities backpedaling and toning down the measures they originally said had to be enforced. Frankly this is a big mess and not likely to get any less messy until EVERYONE takes a deep breath, steps back and allows some reason to prevail.
Be sure to follow the dates of all articles and links. Some information is posted out of chronological order (which is totally fine) but it can get confusing as to what information came out when. The school said they over did it on the mouth rinsing but removed that requirement before the protests. They said this almost the day after the story broke.
My suspicion is that they removed the restriction after a lot of negative feedback, but before the parents protested. I also suspect the school did not effectively communicate with all the parents in the first place which led to them drawing all kinds of crazy conclusions and passing bad information around.
The school has not backpedaled, but has remained fairly consistent, imo.

I concur, this is a mess, like a giant game of operator with the little girl as the big loser in all of this.

The report of the threats comes from a support blog where the mom posts with other mothers with kids that have problems. There is good information there, including what the actual plan was.

here is the link, but we have been careful not to carry any posts over here. thanks

The threats directed toward this little girl are dispiciable! I am apauled.

But while I was contemplating these threats, I began remembering how I was at that age. I was one of those children that needed to find things out on my own. If an adult had told me that dog poop smelled, I was the type of kid that would have to smell it. I honestly think I would have had to see the girls reaction for myself. I know there are a plethora of other children that were just like me. That's truely frightening!

As a sidenote - While grocery shopping today, I noticed a rack of "School Safe" snack products, which were nut/peanut and gluten free (as well as kosher). It's interesting that companies are starting to see this market segment as a room for growth.

Well, unfortunately, it appears there are more and more children with allergies.
So of course the companies are going to see this as a room for growth.

Pardon me for stating the obvious, I guess. I did think the specific brand name was interesting, but you know what they say about simple minds finding simple things eye-catching.

I guess I should have expanded my post by saying that these matters will likely be more conveniently dealt with as products diversify.

I agree it's good that the companies are doing this. I was just making the observation that unfortunately the allergies in children are increasing for whatever reason.

14 yr old in coma after eating cereal with peanuts in it.

She's in my prayers but it doesn't sound good, they are inserting a feeding tube next week and her brain went without oxygen for a bit :(

This is so sad. I'm sorry, I know you can't keep them in a bubble, but I would have a very hard time letting my child eat anything I hadn't personally inspected or prepared. Letting my 16yo drive is about to send me around the bend, so I can't even imagine coping with this type of allergy.

Prayers for this sweet girl and her family and friends.

CNN Story Features DBV Technologies’ VIASKIN® Skin Patch for the Desensitization of Peanut Allergy

Quote: When the VIASKIN patch containing a specific allergen is applied to the skin of a patient with an IgE-mediated allergy — such as peanuts or milk — the allergens are deposited locally on the skin and are captured specifically by the skin’s immuno-competent cells. This triggers the modulations of the immune responses. The epicutaneous exposure is non-invasive: the skin naturally prevents the allergen from entering the bloodstream and thereby dramatically reduces the risk of inducing anaphylaxis. The VIASKIN patch, the “Allergy Patch”, is designed to be easily and painlessly applied by healthcare professionals and also by the patient or his/her parents at home, which facilitates compliance with the treatment.

I think this makes good sense, I hope it can relieve many with these dangerous allergies.

It's a brave thing people do participating in research like that. (By which I mean risking the exposure to help the research in testing, etc.) Good luck to the researchers!

It would be great if they could find a way to help these people. Severe allergies are so life-invasive - the protesting parents know nothing about inconvenience compared to what allergy suffers themselves have to deal with.

It is truly terrifying as a parent of a child with this type of deadly allergy***I was pretty "ok" when my child was small, and I could personally inspect every little thing before he put it in his mouth. We homeschooled until he begged to attend middle school, and from that moment on, I have worried and worried.

Totally understand your concern about your young driver. I raised six sons (read six drivers) and although I've relaxed NOW, back when they were first on their own, Oh, My, Was I a Basket Case!

the point I was making has already been made, please carry on!

I would just be grateful that my child's only inconvenience was washing their hands and leaving their peanut products at home and not saddled with a severe peanut allergy. I would be honored to teach my child that they could make such a HUGE difference in another's life by following these rules.

More and more places are requiring peanut free zones so this is not such an oddity anymore. Asking the kids to wash their hands twice a day and rinse their mouths will probably make this school have the lowest rate of absenteeism and sickness!

I just think it is neat to show these kids that the whole group can really help a single individual. She has this allergy through no fault of her own and these parents make it sound like she has some sort of disease. GASP! she's different!

I would like to think the parents at my kids's school would have asked if they could do more if my child were in this position.

I am not sure that it is that easy to convince a 6 yr old that it is not her fault when the other kids are yelling at her and the girl is blue and swollen, as the ambulance is driving up on the curb and they are running with the oxygen masks and the girls mom is crying. Those images were seared into her brain and she was inconsolable for a day or two. And that was because the girl recovered.
So it would have taken a lot more than a verbal reassurance that it wasn't her fault if her friend had died.

I am just saying that it is more complicated than just saying 'We will all wash our hands' and everything will be fine. It can be a pretty big burden on other innocent kids if things don't work out fine.

If you watch a child go into a seizure because you had a cookie in your backpack, and they actually died in front of you, with the whole class watching---it would take more than reassurance from your parents to make you feel okay again, imo.

I know, that poor baby. She must have felt terrible although it was not her fault at all.

Every morning I have a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast and sometimes eat it on the way to work. I hope I have never killed anyone. I also have a cat and have cat hair on my clothes. Maybe I just need to stay home. I never knew that such severe allergies were so common. Why are they so prevalent now?

In the video one suggestion offered is that we are becoming so germaphobic that out immune systems aren't equipped to tamp down things like this.

Yet allergies are caused by overactive immune systems, maybe we have made ourselves too healthy if that is possible. I have severe allergies, some just life changing some life threatening so I take 2 antihistamines every morning "just in case" and carry more if I start to react.

To add my final comment, this situation seems akin to having children run around with loaded guns and trusting them not to accidentally shoot one.
Maybe I am overprotective, but if my child could die, we are talking DEATH! because a classmate has peanut on their clothes or innocently gives them a candy made in a plant where other products are made, or even does a dumb kid thing and touches them with a peanut just to see what would happen, I would keep them home and let them get plenty of socialization through scouts, church, play dates and all the other ways we spend time with friends. I could not bear to lose a child just because someone makes a mistake. My baby is staying home!

Are you proposed to keep them by your side for the rest of your life or just through the school years? Are you going to let them go to college? Join the workforce? Have kids of their own and possibly be exposed via the next generation's playmates? When will the protection end?

did you guys see the parents had thier CHILDREN out side the school protesting this lil girl? :(
