1937 - The Lincoln (named for the U.S. president of the same name) Tunnel in New York opened to traffic. Originally called the Midtown Hudson Tunnel, the tube between Weehawken, New Jersey and midtown Manhattan allowed only one lane of traffic in each direction. (A new northbound-only tube opened to traffic Feb 4, 1945 and a southbound tube opened May 25, 1957.)

When driving under the Hudson river and while in the tunnel if you look closely at the walls you will typically see small leaks of water dripping down the walls. Its not a very comfortable feeling going through. :)

But its been that way for many years so I guess it will hold up a few more years. LOL

I've always loved Walter Brennan. He reminds me of Uncle Lee. His whiskers on my cheek in the morning before he sharpened his razor on a leather strap. He always wore a starched blue shirt, khaki pants, suspenders, and a straw hat. He smelled like camel cigarettes that he smoked. He saved the red "string" that you pulled to open the pack. He said you saved them and it helped veterans somehow. I followed the poor man everywhere

Spell? where were you running to when you were five? Did have a place to go? or just wanting a place somewhere else.

Maybe I am just too drained today and my brain won't work, but I am not sure what this means. Was it from an old post I may have made that said I was running away from home with my little red bandana (Dad's hankie) tied to a stick, filled with all my treasured scraps of paper? If so, I was running away to Grandma's --- she lived just across the dirt road from my best friend's house (who was next door to us). If I could, I would still run away to her when times feel tough --- she lived all her 13 kids and 50+ grandkids, and however many great-grandkids equally. What special woman in my life.

Hello! I am up from the sick bed, but hubby is not...placed an order for a meat/cheese tray, veggie tray and cookies & chips for Christmas. I don't think I will feel like cooking. They can eat it or not LOL. I have coughed so hard and so often, my ribs are sore.

I see we have a new thread :) Hatfield!! I really enjoyed reading your poem, brought a smile to my face!

I'm sorry, but I thought it was you that had a hard life and ran away when you were in the hospital having your tonsils out, but you didn't get a few blocks. I was set on going back to Oklahoma, and tried to rustle a horse at a riding stable. Who know that the horses wouldn't have saddles and bridles on all the time, and be behind a padlocked gate. They were always lined up all set to go.

Well, my life at that age didn't seem too hard. But when I was about 5 and brother was 4, we were both having our tonsils out at the same time. Afterward he was up talking and I was in the "cage" (those were the most awful hospital beds for kids!). My throat hurt so bad I and I was angry at my brother for feeling good. Thus, I planned on what route to take to run away from tht hospital .... just take that road out the window and I would get there. And if I accidentally took the wrong road at the split, would end up at Grandma's!

I'm still up for running away..... just meet me at the corner and off we will go.

Here is my Christmas Gift to everyone here at the Sidebar:

"Christmas Eve at the Sidebar"
=====================================

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Forums,
Not a creature was posting, not even out of Boredom;

Wine glass was placed, by the keyboard with Care,
in hopes that not a drop, would make it in There;

Posters were nestled all snug in their Beds,
while visions of murders, tormented their Heads;

Since Momma was asleep, I poured another Glass,
Even thought about digging out the Stash;

When out on the lawn there arose such a Clatter,
Had to get off my butt, to see what's the Matter;

Rushing to the Window, I flew like a Flash,
Spilled the wine on the Keyboard, with a large Splash;

When what to my wondering eyes should Appear,
It was just my neighbor Nick, dropping a Beer;

So back to the puter, quietly not to Stir,
Lo and Behold, there they all Were!

It was GiGi, Niner, Zuri and Zoe,
Spellbound, Coffeej, FindHG, and YES and NO;

Bendingpages was there, along with Atthelake, Dmacky, and BYO,
Even Caylees Advocate, Nore, Daisymae, Susza, and Bernina Too;

The topics began flying, with discussions Abound,
What a wonderful night, we had Found;

When finally we tired, and had to get off our rear Ends,
We all could sleep well, knowing we're Friends.

Im sorry if I left some of us out. I tried to include as many as I could and still make it all rhyme. :)

How thoughtful of you, it is really good, and funny. I hope everyone enjoys the holidays and that you all are blessed.

You certainly are a busy :bee:

Enjoy it- you may not always be so busy and you might miss it one day.

Not enjoying it today. Feel like I should be in traction. I estimate I carried in over 200 lbs of food & beverage today. (And I still have more stuff in my trunk.) My back problems are flaring up and I am exhausted. :(

I'll enjoy it Friday when we sit down to eat. But truly, I am ready to pass the baton on to the younger generation. I have come to realize that physically, this is just too much for me.

I'll miss having people gathered around MY table eating food that I prepared. But I trust that I will be quite happy to be a guest at someone else's table eating food that they prepared, whatever that might be. I will be so very grateful to have someone else carry on this tradition, and thankfully, my daughter did inherit the cooking/hospitality genes. :)

LOL, that's what our bus trip is for. Goodbye worries and stress. Welcome good company, food and beverages, we'll visit art museums, tour the seven wonders of the world. Both ancient and new and updated. We'll dive in the deepest oceans, and climb the highest mountains which IIRC was the one thing you wanted to see on our trip.

GigiG, I promise no Stillman or Atkins diets. But then again, on the Atkins you can have the best steaks, with extra sharp cheddar cheese and A-1 on the side. Nice big salads and strawberries and melons, to be healthy.

YesorNo, I love the second one the most.

Hey Niner, have you gone to bed with the chicken yet?

Dmacky, my Kentucky friend, just what did you use orange peels for? LOL a leaf of lettuce and a slice of apple works just as well.

Hatfield, just about the only man that's brave enough to join our trip, thank you so much for your poem, its things like that bring us all together.

Susza, do people in Europe go as nuts for Christmas as we in America do?

Caylee Av., glad and others have joined us. It's nice to have another opinion and viewpoint. Sometimes it helps to put things in perspective, and helps us to see we're not all crazy.

Zuri, have you ever jumped bareback? or free riding?

This story makes me so mad, people who truly need assistance sometimes wait months, some are even denied the help. Then you have these thieves (IMO) ripping the Government off. One would surely think that if there is a substantial monthly balance then that recipient doesn't need the help to begin with. Where is the fraud control? GRRR!!!!

some country Christmas

That's too funny: a meal that goes downhill from clear broth - that's beyond my generally vivid imagination.

hahaha! Sad but true. And me mum would be the first to admit it!

As I recall, it was followed up by a salad (with no dressing) and a dried out turkey breast with some kind of fat-free gravy (what?). I believe that it was in that moment that I decided to do all the cooking for the family going forward. How could I do any worse? lol

Coffee, I hope you & DH will recover soon. Take it day by day and the easiest way. You'll have a tray from each of us and you'll finally have a unique, international Christmas meal. :)

Boy, 13, is found dead in his closet by his father after playing the 'choking game' :scared:

"Memphis Burgess died on December 10 while cutting off the flow of oxygen from his brain in hopes of experiencing a brief high, his family said

The seventh grader at Skyview Middle School in Colorado Springs was found dead by his father, who also found a soft rope nearby..

The so-called choking game is thought to be responsible for more than 100,000 deaths since 1994, according to GASP, an advocacy group dedicated to stopping the activity.

Five to ten per cent of middle school have reportedly played the game..."

Police: Florida Woman Attacks Farting Husband

It's a case of law and odor.
:floorlaugh:

"Marriage isn't always a gas.

A 55-year-old woman in Port St. Lucie, Florida, was arrested earlier this month for domestic battery after allegedly attacking her husband for farting in bed, according to WPTV.com.

The flatulence flap occurred around 3:20 a.m. on Dec. 11 at the home of Dawn Meikle, according to police records...

After a scuffle, Dawn Meikle told police she ran to the bathroom to call 911. She discharged a canister of pepper spray in the bedroom, according to the Miami Herald.."
