There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there."

The little boy then understood how powerful his words were. He looked up at his father and said "I hope you can forgive me father for the holes I put in you."

"Of course I can," said the father.

It's not always anger, it is your actions in general. There are no "fresh starts" in life. There is no new beginning. Forgiveness comes easy for many people but the scars of the past, they never go away. Watch what you do today, because sometimes the price isn't worth the reward.

Dying mum's last wish to get justice for her murdered daughter

"The terminally ill mother of a young woman murdered almost 20 years ago has begged prosecutors to bring the prime suspect to court before she dies.
The Crown want to extradite Sougat Mukherjee from India and put him in the dock accused of murdering Tracey Wylde in 1997.
But, a year after his arrest, red tape is still preventing his transfer and her mum Fay McCash now fears she will not live long enough to see justice.
Fay, 55, who is suffering from lung cancer, told the Daily Record : “At this moment, I am a terminally ill person. Tracey is in my thoughts every single day. I only want to see justice done.”...

Tracey was found dead in the bedroom of her top-floor flat on Torryburn Road in Barmulloch, Glasgow, in November 1997. It is believed she had been strangled..."

Tribute to Dr. Jon Marc Taylor, a Prison Education Crusader

"On December 27, at the ago of 54, Missouri state prisoner and prison education crusader Dr. Jon Marc Taylor died of a heart attack in his prison cell. For those who knew him, and those who knew of his amazing transformation and contributions to the field of prison education, he will be sorely missed.

The story of Jon Marc Taylor is anything but the typical story of a prisoner. Incarcerated since the age of 19 as a result of crimes committed in 1980, Dr. Taylor is perhaps the very ideal of reformation and rehabilitation. While incarcerated he earned his high school diploma, bachelor's of science and master's of arts through Ball State University, and finally his Doctorate in Public Administration from Kennedy Western University.

These are merely his educational feats, his advocacy feats, such as leading the charge to restore prisoner Pell grant eligibility, are a whole other story of remarkable success and realizing the seemingly impossible..."

James Ridgeway’s Solitary Reporting

"...there may be no reporter in the United States who has collected more stories of solitary-confinement prisoners than the veteran investigative reporter James Ridgeway.

Since it is virtually impossible for a reporter to gain access to a solitary-confinement unit, Ridgeway came up with another strategy. “I wanted to use the prisoners themselves as reporters,” he told me. “Of course, that’s taboo in the mainstream press, since we all know they’re liars and double dealers and escape artists.” He chuckled. But breaking that taboo “didn’t bother me at all,” he said. “My position was: all we want to do here is, we want to know what is going on inside.”

Each week, Ridgeway leaves his home in Washington, D.C., walks to his local post office, and returns with about fifty letters from men and women locked in solitary-confinement units in prisons around the country. The letters began arriving in 2010, soon after Ridgeway launched a Web site, called Solitary Watch, with an editor named Jean Casella. “When we started, there was nobody writing about this,” she said. Ridgeway was then seventy-three years old. He dug into his retirement fund to help cover startup costs, and now, when he goes to the post office each week, he pushes a walker...

Ridgeway will turn eighty this year. Lately, his eyesight has been weakening, making it much harder for him to read and file all the letters that sit in piles atop his desk. “I have so many right now I can’t face them,” he said. But he has no plans to stop. “Most of these guys I write to, all they want is to reach out and have a human hand,” he said. “I used to think they wanted their cases dealt with, but all they really want is just to have some sort of correspondence, some kind of contact with the outside world.”.."

Chicago Announces New Police Training For Dealing With Mentally Ill
The U.S. Justice Department is currently investigating the Chicago police's use of deadly force, among other issues.

"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, facing sharp criticism over police shootings of civilians, announced reforms on Friday to address how police and other emergency workers respond to the mentally ill, including new crisis training for officers...

The reforms would increase the number of officers who receive a 40-hour "Crisis Intervention Team," training course, which teaches the best ways to de-escalate situations with people in crisis, especially the mentally ill, the mayor's office said.

The number of officers who receive this training would expand to 2,800 from 1,890 this year, so each district will have a CIT officer staffed on every watch.

In addition, all of the department's 12,000 police officers would receive eight hours of training on mental health awareness, and 911 dispatchers will be trained on identifying situations requiring crisis-intervention tactics..."

The duo were spotted on a surveillance camera by the owner of the safe, who became aware of their presence from a motion-activated alarm which notified his cell phone. The owner then notified the police..."

UNDERSTANDING TERROR
Inside the mind of a female would-be suicide bomber in Pakistan

"...“What will you do after you graduate?” I once asked her.

“I want to be a suicide bomber,” she said in a matter-of-fact way.

“How would you feel if I died in your attack?” I asked.

“I would be upset,” she said, “not because you would die, but because as a non-believer you would go to hell. I like you and would miss you in paradise. I would like to see you for eternity but can’t. That makes me sad.”

In a strange way it was a lovely thing to say—how much she would want to spend eternity with me even though she would have taken me from “this life” on earth.
Suicide bombing is evil, as is terrorism. There is no justification for it and it must be defeated. But how? Many people like to say that terrorists are insane. They would read the above story and think Amarah was mad and perhaps I was nuts to listen to her.

There is another view, however. To defeat terror we must understand it. Listening to Amarah’s thinking process and justification is critical to finding a path to achieve this..."

Does evil exist and, if so, are some people just plain evil?

"You would have to be naïve to believe that evil exists, right? If you were asked to come up with examples of evil villains, you might think of the Emperor from Star Wars, Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter, or even Dr Evil from the Austen Powers films. Evil characters belong in horror movies, fantasy fiction and perhaps also in religious texts, but surely not in the real world...

What do we mean by evil?

In answering this question we must survey the claims people make about evil, and ask what these people take evil to be. While it is true that the word “evil” can be used to refer to a malevolent supernatural force, many of us use “evil” without intending it to have any supernatural connotations...

In calling Hitler an evil person, we suggest that he could not be fixed, or made into a good person. Once someone has become an evil person, he or she is a moral write-off. That’s why some philosophers are sceptical of the idea that any actual person is evil. If everyone can be redeemed and made good, then no-one is evil.

I think it’s overly optimistic to think that we could have fixed Hitler, or Ted Bundy, or Dennis Rader, so I conclude that evil persons, as well as evil actions, are real."

Thanks for these photos, but most of the ones I looked at showed a place that's quite obviously economically depressed, likely due to long periods of war and genocide, etc. Maybe it's recovered by this point, but from what I've read, it remains a disputed territory, so that's a bit of a turn-off. :(

Plus, it's land-locked, which makes me claustrophobic. It's neighbors, Montenegro and Albania, are supposed to be wonderful (and affordable) destinations, with enchanting seaside locales on the Adriatic. I'd love to visit those countries!

As to Grenada, to me it's not just nice place to visit; I could seriously see myself retiring there. It's really very lovely and one of the few places that is almost completely self-sustaining in terms of food, (its moniker is the "Spice Island"). I had an extended stay there with an American ex-pat, and everything we ate came from the island or the sea around it. One day, we took a snorkeling trip, and while we were doing that, our guide was spear fishing. He caught several fish and a huge lobster, then cooked them for us on a make-shift grill on a deserted island. We also had a variety of citrus and other fresh fruits and vegetables. It was all incredibly delicious!

I check out real estate there every so often, keeping the dream alive. I would love to go there and never have to come back! :)

ETA: Unfortunately, an American woman was recently murdered there. But I think that's an outlier. I felt completely safe there. And happy!

Grenada looks beautiful (never been there myself- never been out of the country- scared :scared: don't like to travel- I'm a homebody and like to stay close to home).

The air is driest around February 27, at which time the relative humidity drops below 68% (mildly humid) three days out of four; it is most humid around November 15, exceeding 92% (very humid) three days out of four...

Dew Point

Dew point is often a better measure of how comfortable a person will find the weather than relative humidity because it more directly relates to whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid.

Over the course of a year, the dew point typically varies from 69°F (muggy) to 79°F (oppressive) and is rarely below 66°F (muggy) or above 81°F (very oppressive)..."

Grenadian man charged with killing U.S. tourist Jessica Colker

"(CNN)A man in Grenada has been charged with murder in Sunday's death of U.S. tourist Jessica Colker on the Caribbean island, the Royal Grenada Police Force said Wednesday.

David Martin Benjamin, 27, of Grenada, was due to appear in a magistrate's court Wednesday morning, police said.

Grenada police have said Colker, 39, of Atlanta, was found dead after she was attacked by a man with a machete while she was walking with her husband along a beach just before noon Sunday.

Colker's husband, whom CNN affiliate WGCL identified as a 62-year-old man, was unharmed, Grenada police have said. The husband escaped and contacted police, WGCL reported, citing Grenada police.

Colker's body was found on the beach near where she was last seen; an autopsy determined she died of an "extensive skull fracture and asphyxia," police said..."

Sure, I'm up for it if there is time enough for long swims, snorkelling, cayaking and may be hobie cat-sailing.
What if we would just rent a hut there for a week and then go down to Grenada (my result) and rent another hut? It would allow us to get in touch with the local people - that's what I find so fascinating.
We could also do the same on the islands in between (I've been on Les Saintes that is a very small island belonging to Guadeloupe); there too, you would find all you love plus you could use your french language skills like:

Years ago, I read the book The Journey from Eden: The Peopling of Our World by Brian Fagen (??), sometime in the '90s, IIRC, about the Eve hypothesis- good book and sheds some light on Eve and the journey of humans through the centuries.

I'll have to see if my library has that book! Has any one been watching "Finding Your Roots" on the PBS channel on Tuesdays? I love that show!

BTW: Yesterday I played swiss lotto for the first time in my life convinced I'd win the 16.5 Mio.
I lost 17.50
As nobody hit the jackpot there'll be 17.5 Mio to win on wednesday.
What do you suggest: should I play again?

If you don't play - you can't win.... YES!! PLAY!!! :giggle:

Yes or No, I really appreciate all the links you post regarding Solitary Confinement.

I have come to see it as a truly barbaric practice which should be banned. There's got to be a better way of punishing the worst-of-the-worst. And sadly, it isn't used exclusively for those sorts; it's frequently used on run-of-the-mill criminals, often to nightmarish ends. I applaud the President for taking measures to curtail this practice. If extended stays in Solitary aren't "cruel and unusual," I don't know what is.

Here is a story about Jack Powers. (He didn't start out being mentally ill, but he most certainly is now):

Jack Powers is an inmate in the federal Bureau of Prisons convicted of bank robbery and escaping from prison. He spent more than a decade in extreme isolation at the ADX where he amputated his fingers, earlobes, a testicle and his scrotum. He has tried several times to commit suicide. “The world outside is like another planet,” he wrote from ADX. “I feel like I am trapped within a disease.” Powers is a plaintiff in a civil rights lawsuit against the federal government regarding its use of longterm solitary confinement for the mentally ill. — S.G.
