Are Paper Books Really Disappearing?

"When Peter James published his novel Host on two floppy disks in 1993, he was ill-prepared for the “venomous backlash” that would follow. Journalists and fellow writers berated and condemned him; one reporter even dragged a PC and a generator out to the beach to demonstrate the ridiculousness of this new form of reading. “I was front-page news of many newspapers around the world, accused of killing the novel,” James told pop.edit.lit. “[But] I pointed out that the novel was already dying at an alarming rate without my assistance.”..."

Art From The Holocaust: The Stories Behind The Images

A new exhibition in Berlin explores the grim realities of life for Jews in Nazi camps and ghettoes. Thomas Rogers meets one of its curators.

"A historic new exhibit, Art from the Holocaust, opened in the rear wing of the German Historical Museum in Berlin last week. For the first time ever, art from the collection of Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Museum is being shown outside in Germany. The exhibit features 100 works, mostly drawings and paintings, by Jewish inmates of labour camps, ghettoes and concentration camps. Many of the works portray the dark realities of day-to-day life in Nazi imprisonment. The fact that the works survived to the present day is, in most cases, a miracle: many were hidden or smuggled out at great risk by friends of the artists...."

One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion
~Simone De Beauvoir

The Story Of Frank 'Bopsy' Salazar, Make-A-Wish's First Wish Kid, Will Stay With You Forever

"The story of a 7-year-old boy named Bopsy has been told countless times before.

It's been forwarded in email chains, posted on Facebook, retold in sermons and undoubtedly shared over dinner tables. It appeared in an edition of "Chicken Soup For The Soul" and in a Phoenix Fire Department newsletter. But along the way, details have been lost and added, switched up and sometimes completely mangled. On occasion, Bopsy is renamed "Billy." But the decades-long game of telephone hasn't erased one, indisputable fact -- Bopsy's story is worth telling.

Now, 32 years after Bopsy lost his life to leukemia, The Huffington Post spoke to his mother, the fireman he idolized, and the man who made him the Make-A-Wish Foundation's first-ever "wish kid." This is the real story of Bopsy..."

'The best thing I ever did was give my heart to you': American Sniper widow posts touching tribute on anniversary of Chris Kyle's death (with clip)

"Taya Kyle's tribute marked the three-year-anniversary of his death..

Taya Kyle, 41, has revealed that the past few months, which saw both the release of a movie about her husband and Routh being found guilty of capital murder, have been 'particularly hard'.

Taya called her husband and Littlefield's death an act of 'pure evil at work' but said she did not want to focus on 'the pain and grief' that remains in her life, but rather what she has learned from it.

30D9131100000578-0-image-a-3_1454524336847.jpg

(Taya took to Facebook to share was she has learned in the years since her husband Chris was gunned down by fellow war veteran Eddie Ray Routh at a shooting range in Rough Creek, Texas, on February 2, 2013)

'I have learned:
Some loves will last forever. Wishing you could go back is futile, but the lessons learned you can take with you on the journey ahead. People can rob us blind and hurt us, but God keeps his promise to counteract evil with beauty. It's our job to wait and keep our hearts open to seeing it. Justice for the big and even smaller offenses take time. The timing is not in our control.

I have learned...We are never alone in our pain; never the only ones suffering in life - it's part of the human walk. Everyone needs a helping hand and a kind, understanding ear. Joy/happiness is not a destination, sometimes it's simply a choice. Hard work - spiritually, emotionally and physically - is worth the results/reward. Our work is never done.

Dreams take time to realize. It's the process that matters. Children grow up fast. God puts the right people in our path at the right time. Traditional family isn't our only family. People have an enormous capacity to love even through their own pain.

The actions we take in life, the love we show, the character we prove in our actions....all live on long after we do. The beautiful things we do in life MATTER, we may never know the effect of each small ripple of kindness we put into the world. Trust me though, it lives on.

I have learned the way you love a child,or any person for that matter, will be frozen in time when your number comes up, so make it a love that will carry them through life. Chris did an extraordinary job of this and I am grateful every single day.

I have learned...There was only one Chris Kyle. People say you learn to live with the pain, and maybe that's true. I have learned how to survive, to do my best at carrying on his spirit and his legacy but I have not learned to fully live without the man.

I have learned...I don't heal without help. I am immensely grateful for those who have helped. I am not a quitter even when I feel like quitting. I have learned that showing up, putting one foot in front of the other, is 90% of the battle.

There are so many loving people who will help another, not for fanfare and not for personal gain, but simply because love guides their life. I am blessed to have met many of these people and have them in my life.

I am grateful to God for showing me love lives and our spirit lives on.

To Chris, thank you for loving me and letting me love you. As my wedding ring is inscribed, you are "My love, My life" I would run this race, loving you every step of the way, all over again. The best thing I ever did was give my heart to you'..."

Well that cucumber thing is scary. I love cucumbers and eat them several times a week in salads. I mostly buy the seedless English cucumbers that are individually wrapped, but I just checked and the one I have says Mexico. Why is it called an English cucumber? :waitasec:

BBM because the seeds used to grow them came from England

Psychologists Analyzed a Big Collection of Condemned Inmates’ Last Words

"It’s a strange and uncomfortable exercise: Imagine you’re about to be executed, and you’re given the opportunity to make a final statement. What would your last words be? To psychologists who study how humans cope with fear and death, condemned inmates’ final statements are — setting aside the ick factor — a rich potential source of information. There are few other situations in which you can hear the thoughts of someone who knows they will be dead in a few minutes.

In a new paper in Frontiers in Psychology, the researchers Dr. Sarah Hirschmüller and Dr. Boris Egloff tap a rich source of these statements — the state of Texas — to better understand how condemned inmates make sense of what has happened, and is about to happen, to them..."

I'm sure some of these people deserve to die, but I still find it very sad. I guess more than anything, I'm sad that people are capable of committing such heinous acts that leads our society to feel the death penalty is necessary. I agree with it in some circumstances, but not all.

Not to mention our justice system is so imperfect, it's a rather arrogant system to think they're above making the mistake of actually killing an innocent person. jmo

Automatic Windows 10 installs begin but how easy are they to stop?

"...When asked whether a Windows 7 and 8.1 machine will attempt to begin the install again after it's been declined, a Microsoft spokesman did not answer the question directly - stating only that users will be able to stop Windows 10 from installing by changing their Windows Update settings.

To stop the automatic upgrade from initiating, Windows Update settings will need to be changed from "Install updates automatically" to one of several options that allow users to choose which updates are downloaded and installed - as outlined here. Unticking the box marked "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" on the Windows Update settings page may also work...."

-changed "settings" to this:

"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" (this one gets you a little message every so often when Microsoft wants to
mess with your computer )

or you can use this setting:

"Never check for updates"

Thanks for this info, Y/N. I just went in and changed my settings. I have noticed the update window has been popping up more and more frequently it seems. :gaah: I mean I have no knowledge about Windows 10, but didn't I read here from you and others that it's not good?

The sea lion is very skinny for its age -- weighing about half of what it should, according to experts at SeaWorld. For now, the sea lion's condition is listed as "critical."
This year's "Godzilla" El Niño may be to blame.

Some of the last words in that article are  and some are

CARL PANZRAM, 39

“HURRY UP, YOU HOOSIER *advertiser censored*, I COULD KILL TEN MEN WHILE YOU’RE FOOLING AROUND!”

PETER KURTEN A.K.A. THE VAMPIRE OF DUSSELDORF, 48

“TELL ME, AFTER MY HEAD HAS BEEN CHOPPED OFF, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO HEAR, AT LEAST FOR A MOMENT, THE SOUND OF MY OWN BLOOD GUSHING FROM THE STUMP OF MY NECK? THAT WOULD BE A PLEASURE TO END ALL PLEASURES.”

JAMES D. FRENCH, 30

“HEY FELLAS! HOW ABOUT THIS FOR A HEADLINE FOR TOMORROW’S PAPER? ‘FRENCH FRIES’!”

And this one just makes me so sad (she was really sick towards the end, IMO):

AILEEN WUORNOS, 46

“I’D JUST LIKE TO SAY I’M SAILING WITH THE ROCK, AND I’LL BE BACK LIKE INDEPENDENCE DAY, WITH JESUS JUNE 6. LIKE THE MOVIE, BIG MOTHER SHIP AND ALL, I’LL BE BACK.”

She is absolutely ADORABLE! I, too, hope she's going to be okay. :)

But I'm a bit concerned that SeaWorld was called in (why not an animal welfare nonprofit?). SeaWorld has developed such a bad reputation and has been under withering scrutiny recently... :(

Morning!

Not so good... it's his heart. Now that he has "new" insurance (covered California), he looked to see if he can go back to his "old" heart specialist here in town instead going down the hill to Sacramento - he can!! And he got an appointment yesterday for this coming Monday!! He's happy about that - and surprised he got an appointment so quickly! He really wants to get that pacemaker! So hoping she can do something to make him feel better. He said he can't wait for the chemo shot, as it made him feel better. That's 1 week and 1/2 away...

To me it looks like two people with their mouths open and an xray in the middle...

Snipped your post, Niner. Great news that he can see his familiar specialist and got an appointment so quickly!

This ink blot has turned out more interesting than I expected. And x-ray, huh? Interesting.

Ive always liked Vinnie. Even though he was I think a defense attorney I think he was very fair when talking about some of the guilty parties lately. I think it was Dr Drew where I saw him discussing some of the cases more recently.
