All we know so far about the rescue of Julen:

- The drilling of the vertical tunnels has not yet begun.
- Drillers are expected to start working towards noon.
- The works could last up to 15 hours.
- This weekend the technicians hope to reach him despite difficulties with the terrain.
- The rains are present in Totalán, although they are not expected intensely.

PRESS CONFERENCE | It is expected that in the next few minutes we will know more details of the rescue operation , since Ángel García Vidal, responsible for the rescue teams will give a press conference. We will keep you update.

12:15

THE TUNNELS |Initially it was thought to drill averticaland a horizontaltunnelto have two options. But the horizontal was complicated: there were landslides. Then we thought of two vertical tunnels and now a single vertical tunnel is being made.

FINAL TRACK, THE GALLERY | Shortly before reaching Julen , two miners are going to build a gallery, the most dangerous part of the operation. The miner will have to be horizontal and hold the ceiling with wood to get closer to the child.

A bit more about the "platform" the rescue folks excavated around the borehole:

12:55-- "The platform has finally been located at about 25 meters, so the drill must penetrate the ground at least 55 meters, until reaching the level -80 from where the horizontal tunnel will depart, which will be borne by the specialists of the service of Hunosa mining rescue, in charge of the rescue operation."

So the good news is that they don't need to drill quite as far, which will help with the drilling of the vertical shaft(s).

The bad news is the terrain has some varying layers of strata, some of very hard stone (shale? slate? I've heard both. I haven't had a geology course since high school, so I am no expert), some of loose soil, which may be why the borehole that Julen fell in had a that layer of rock chips and dirt, etc. that fell on him. They kept having collapses when they attempted to do a horizontal tunnel, so the tunnel they drift is going to have to be shored up as they dig towards Julen. That takes more time.

This is a heart-warming update:

13:40-- "TOTALÁN SOLIDARIO | The 700 residents of Totalán have turned their houses, closed or in use, to the service of the technicians and experts involved in the rescue, so they can clean up or rest for a few hours. A food collection service has also been organized for the workers."

Isn't that lovely? No matter how crappy life can be at times, it is news like this that can restore our faith in humanity.

Update on time:

14:20-- "36 HOURS TO GET TO JULEN | After the vertical tunnel that can take about 15 hours, another horizontal tunnel with pneumatic hammers will have to be excavated, a slower process that will take 20 hours. In total it is expected to reach Julen in about 36 hours."

So. As they say in the Night's Watch (GoT and AsoIaF books): "Now my watch begins."

It's going to be a long watch. Hang in there everyone.

My thanks too, to all of you holding tight and seeing this through. Your optimism gives such beautiful and great hope!

Many of us sat on pins & needles together over the rescue of our Wild Boars. If I were stripped to my soul in front of a god, I'd say "this is where the best of humanity is found". And now we gather again. *HUGS* for all of you! Old & new. :)

17:21-- "President Juanma Moreno has transferred to the Julen family the solidarity of the Andalusian people and has been confident that "the commendable effort" that is being made will bear fruit, since that will be "great news that all of Spain waits with a shrunken heart "

It's not any sort of secret that Spain has been undergoing some fights and battles for years, over territories and partisan politics. It's been very rough there for a few years.

I'm going to give you something lovely again to look at, to soothe our souls as we wait.

Spain has a famous riding school, and has the most lovely, well-trained, exquisite horses. Look at them; see their precision and drive, and know the rescue people are also working every bit as hard.

<3 Julan!

I assume they will drill as far down as where the bottom of the 15 m shaft is? It's most likely Julen is at the very bottom right? And from there they will dig horizontally to where he is.

Just trying to picture it ...

Me too. They tell us one depth-- what was it?

Now they speak of that void under even that debris layer. (Which I am sort of hoping for. Maybe oxygen, maybe ground water trickles, and so on and so forth.)

The horizontal drift (tunnel, and according to them, needing shoring up to prevent collapse) will be done when they get close to Julan's expected location. But the delay... and the drop?

Well, that is what scares the bejaysus out of me.

If they dig & shore that drift-- unless they are exceptionally fortunate-- it will be either on par, above or below.

The terrain is dodgy and until they get in there, we don't know what they face.

Pray hard, pray happy.

Exactly. Maybe the georadar can be used to pinpoint his location once they're down there? Or maybe the machine is too large, I don't know.

If not, I would assume he is at the bottom and dig at that height.

Would be terrible if they get through horizontally and realize he's meters away and they still can't reach him.

Oh no. Don't want to think of that last bit.

I hope to all the gods that they can get that georadar down there, and maybe a camera. And pipes to bring in oxygen, and pipes to add some warmth (as hypothermia will be a concern) and maybe a microphone to speak with and reassure Julan. I hope to heaven that he was instinctually led to lick the cave wall drippings for hydration like the Beaconsfield blokes did. Or maybe a pool of water. Jeez.

That damned terrain! The reason (from what I am trying to piece together) that the original borehole was dug then abandoned was that it didn't strike... what? Minerals? Water? It hit hard rock and diverged, so what does that say? Help us geologists! It's a dodgy area when it comes to geology from all I have read.

I should rest; I am getting antsy and cranky now. :(
