In the case of Alfredo Rampi, the Italian boy who fell into a well in Vermicino in 1981, they were able to lower someone down to reach him. That well was just two inches wider than the one Julen is now stuck in. I guess it is just too narrow to get anyone, even an extremely slim person, down there or they would have tried that already.

Alfredo Rampi - Wikipedia

(In spite of being able to reach Alfredo they were not able to pull him out and he died three days after falling into the well.)

Julen only weighs 24 pounds. He's not a big boy. He is probably about the same size as my little guy. I mean it makes me claustrophobic just looking at the hole but I can easily see how he slipped down.

They can't send a rescuer in like in Alfredo's case because not only is it too small, it's also blocked. So the person would have to clear the dirt out and there is no room to do that and nowhere to put the dirt if they managed.

I want this to be like the Thai cave rescue. I mean no one expected them to be alive in there either. But we all know this is so very different.

Last minute of the rescue of Julen, the child trapped in a well of Totalán (Málaga)

This is the new plan to rescue Julen from the well.

18.45
The two holes are made to try to speed up the search , since the technicians have recognized that they do not know to what depth Julen is . The two wells are made to save the stopper. For each one of them, according to Ángel García Vidal, delegate of the College of Civil Engineers of Minas de Málaga, two rescuers will come down. One will click on the wall of the tunnel to open a window below the plug and access the well in order to know how high the child may be. The other will remove the materials from the well. JJ Madueño informs .

He has said that they are considering the hypothesis that the ground plug that is 71 meters deep from the well was not caused by the fall of Julen.

The rescue teams continue for the fourth day the tasks at the bottom of the well , in the town of Totalán (Málaga), without being able to determine the state in which Julen can be found, 2 years old and eleven kilos in weight.

If the blockage wasn't caused by his fall, where is he? Are they saying the blockage occurred after his fall during rescue efforts? I'm so confused.

Yes they are using georadar. It shows an open space, which is where he's supposed to be.

They are also saying that the plug isn't dirt from the well. Totally confusing.

"The georadar of the Swedish company that they have brought has detected, although it is not very precise, that under the stopper there is a hollow space of about 10-12 meters and that is where the child is supposed to be," explains José Antonio Berrocal # julen

The technical chief of the miners displaced in Totalán has said that the hard earth of the plug does not seem to correspond with the one of the walls of the well # julen

The family of # Julen has asked that we fill the networks of hearts to support their son. Less sensational news and more hearts!

Dear Ms. Facetious,

Thank you so much for finding the information that they've been using georadar!

You are always greatly appreciated!!

Thank you Zen, I was so relieved to see you here for Julen. If only we had the power to WILL things to happen! That little guy would come out of there healthy if we did.

Very confusing yes. Could translation be (part of) the problem?

# MamenMendizábal screwed up in # MVT # MVTTun them by saying open mic and unknowingly that engineers make the paripé in the case of # Totalán trying to rescue # Julen @ MVTARDE

#mamenmendizábal hashtag on Twitter

I don't know who said what on the open mic, but the meaning of paripe is to put on an act or pretend. So someone is accusing the engineers of putting on and act and pretending to rescue Julen? It is so frustrating when it's in another country, I wish I knew all the languages!

Maybe that person was saying, the engineers say they will rescue Julen but they already know he expired, but keep up an optimistic front for the family and media?

"These are the next steps to find Julen"
"The only certainty in Julen's rescue is the complexity of the operation. The land where it is located in the pit where the two-year-old boy fell last Sunday seems to have rebelled against the enormous efforts to find it. The hours advance quickly. And the operation has already become a civil engineering work that in normal circumstances would take months. In Totalán, however, it is being done in hours. The operative works with the idea that under the earth plug there is a hollow and, therefore, air that would allow the child to breathe. By Nacho Sánchez (Photo: Paco Puentes )"

That would make a bit more sense. Translation is definitely part of the issue. I was just relieved that they were using the word rescue, instead of recovery but I assumed it was a translation thing.

I don't believe they have any way to KNOW if he's alive or not. I think the assumption may be that is not but I don't believe they have any actual proof of that. So I don't think they are pretending. Just realistic balanced with hopeful. How could you give up on a kid if you were not sure they were dead?

This is just so sad! It seems like an impossible task that needs to be done... yesterday! Just torture for the parents. :(

Dear happyday,

This is a dire and deeply saddening situation, although hope exists for a good outcome, with messages from all around the world conveying this.

There is always hope. Sometimes that is all we have.

It is heartwarming to hear of the entire surrounding communities embracing the parents of Julen with love, kindness and genuine support.

"Andalusian Psychological College and a team of experts from Málaga’s emergency services have traveled to the scene to provide support for the family."

My understanding is that the engineer said this:

"We're putting all our efforts in going as fast as possible but I want you to know there are huge difficulties," Angel Garcia Vidal, the engineer coordinating the work, told reporters on the fifth day of rescue operations.

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.france24.com/en/20190117-search-spanish-toddler-well-runs-problems

In the clip in your post, he was expanding on the quote above.

The female anchor then said in Spanish: ‘...a classic white lie..’ and the male anchor scoffed in approval to her comment directly after the clip stopped.

My impression: the anchors’ position is that this is a recovery, not a rescue mission, and are scoffing at the engineer for not confirming their beliefs.

ETA: This is my rusty Spanish translation, and what I understood of the clip.

Thank you Lexi, that explains the hot mic comment because the engineer clearly was standing in front of a mic! Well those news anchors may be right but they don't have to act like that right now. I think it's very good that they are viewing it as a rescue until it's confirmed it's not!

Here is one of the latest updates.

It describes how "specialized" the Mining Rescue Brigade of Asturias is. Quite an interesting read.

"The members of the Mining Rescue Brigade of Asturias will be the first to see Julen, the two-year-old boy who fell by a well of a hundred meters last Sunday in Totalán (Málaga)".

"What distinguishes us is the work in unbreathable atmospheres with long-term autonomous breathing equipment.

""Between arriving and leaving ... And resting, because in there you have to be 100%, it is not worth less. The tendency is to stay, but it is very important to regulate. I know that the pressure is tremendous."
