On July 9th, 1993, around 1:40 a.m., three officers from Sedona Police Department in Sedona, Arizona, were dispatched to Coffee Pot Drive after a 911 call from a man named Russell Bennett Peterson came in. A young mother of two died during a domestic altercation, and while her live-in partner was investigated as a suspect and the case was considered a homicide, the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office would eventually refuse to press charges due to an alleged lack of evidence.

July 9th, 1993- Was the date that Stephanie Wasilishin decided to leave Russell.
Later that evening, she would be found with a gun shot wound through her neck.. Along with Gunpowder residue on her left hand, although she was right handed.

After the police came, they put Russell Peterson & 2 children —> Stephanie’s daughter, and his daughter with Stephanie (different dads) into a police car.. together. While Russell still had Stephanie’s blood on him.
Nikki, one of the children, distinctively remembers her sister turning to her and stating.. “Poppy killed mommy. Poppy killed mommy. Poppy killed mommy.” Over and over again.

Unsolved in Sedona: Decades later, family members frustrated at lack of progress in cold case

The case looking into the 1993 death of a Sedona woman still hasn't been solved. Questions remain as the one person who investigators thought was responsible didn't have enough evidence against him to file charges. This is a look into the cold case of Stephanie Wasilishin.

“According to the medical examiner’s report, the bullet entered through the left side of Stephanie’s neck. Dr. Philip Keen told police he was calling the manner of death a homicide after learning Stephanie was right-hand dominant.”
