Meanwhile in Kenya: http://www.nation.co.ke/news/Gay-rights-non-issue-Uhuru-Obama/-/1056/2801274/-/3od37rz/-/index.html

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday dismissed gay rights as a "non-issue" ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit later this week.

President Kenyatta also said Deputy President William Ruto, who is still on trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague accused of crimes against humanity, would also meet the US leader.
"We have heard that in the US they have allowed gay relations and other dirty things," Mr Ruto said, according to the Nation newspaper.

One Kenyan man, Kidala Vincent, had promised to lead a march of "5,000 totally naked men and women" to protest Mr Obama's support for gay rights, so that he can "see and understand the difference between a man and woman".

I have to give a wry chuckle to the last part. The naivety is astounding. I mean that in the good sense of the word, not as a put down. Yes it will show President Obama that there are differences between man and woman. SO? It will be a long time before Africa accepts gay rights let alone marriage mainly because knowledge of such things is simply not discussed except in whispers. Then again it was only 50 years ago or so that we stopped discussing it in whispers.

A classic rhetorical strategy, and very successful as such, as it manages to portray people with the opposing viewpoint as stupid and demonstrate that the speaker completely missed the point at the same time...

I dare say most gay people know the difference between man and woman, that's how they manage to consistently choose same sex partners. :p

Michigan’s loss in gay marriage fight could cost $2M

Robert Snell, The Detroit News 7:21 p.m. EDT July 25, 2015

Detroit — Lawyers for a Hazel Park couple who helped legalize same-sex marriage across the nation asked a federal judge Saturday to force the state to pay more than $1.9 million in legal fees.

The request puts a price-tag on the state of Michigan’s failed opposition to a landmark case that lasted more than three years. It comes almost exactly one month after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.

Court records describe a shoestring battle and hardship endured by lawyers whose clients couldn't afford the fight. One lawyer sold her house to keep alive a case that ended in a landmark ruling...

Well, if I wasn't familiar with all the differences before, I certainly am now! I mentioned that we got Netflix for our anniversary and I have been binge-watching ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (which I can't recommend too highly).

Two attempts to challenge the referendum result through the courts were dismissed today by the Irish High Court, clearing the way for the government to legislate for marriage equality. Same sex couples should have been able to get married from October onwards, but this has delayed it to the end of the year.

Still, at least the court awarded all costs against the plaintiffs so it was an expensive exercise for them to delay other people's marriages for a month or two.

I know Ireland isn't as bad off financially as Michigan, but both have had their money problems over the past decade. What an excellent use of funds in a futile fight against civil rights rather than improving housing, healthcare and the like for their citizens! :/sarcasm

To be clear, I AM NOT suggesting Ireland is a Third World country, just that Ireland, like California or New York, has better ways to spend its money.

Absolutely! That's why I'm glad the tax payer didn't have to pick up the bill for the legal fees.

Businesses catering to same-sex couples

Lauren Abdel-Razzaq, The Detroit News 11:23 p.m. EDT August 14, 2015

When states around the country began legalizing same-sex marriage, longtime couple Julie Rogers and Jennifer Butka of Livonia decided to be patient.

“We always said we’d wait for Michigan,” said Rogers. “But so many things started to change, so we went to Illinois and got married there.”

But the courthouse wedding with few family members and friends present was not the wedding of their dreams. So on Saturday, a year after their official marriage, they are holding a traditional wedding at their church and a reception afterward for 185 guests...

DeBoer and Rowse exchange vows in ‘historic’ wedding

Oralandar Brand-Williams, The Detroit News 4:20 a.m. EDT August 23, 2015

Southfield —The Michigan pair who helped change history for same-sex couples across the country legally wed Saturday in a ceremony attended by 250 excited guests that included U.S. Rep Debbie Dingell and celebrity attorney Gloria Allred.

The highly anticipated nuptials of April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse took place at a local banquet hall that was kept private.

DeBoer wore a cream-colored wedding dress and Rowse, who wore a black tuxedo, walked down the aisle to late Beatle George Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun.” DeBoer was escorted by her father Ken DeBoer and the couple’s two young daughters. Rowse was escorted by the couple’s sons...

So Kim Davis refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay couples stating to do so would "irreparably and irreversibly violate her conscience."

I guess being married four times and divorced three doesn't violate her conscience though. Some sacred document that marriage license is, huh Kim? Disgusting hypocrite.

Stumbling across an article about Davis drives me a little crazy. Surely her fifteen minutes ended long ago.

I only see her as milking the situation to have her name in the public domain - no heroic stand, just a busy body who could use a hobby to keep herself occupied and out of the backyards of others. Unable to fathom how she manages to maintain her job. Jmo.

Easy. She's an elected official. Most of her constituents probably agree with her, so there's not going to be a recall election or anything like that. The state legislature could remove her, but it is not in session and doing so would be unpopular politically in that region.

It will be quite interesting to see where this goes.

I would be the farm that she's smelling $ for being a martyr to the cause. Whatever that cause is. Hate for others, I guess.

Supposedly she was born again after the multiple marriages and children out of wedlock.

Not that it matters. She needs to do her job.

Man, how cool would that be if I could get paid $80K a year for not doing my job.

It bothers me that Ms. Davis is essentially a media distraction to what is going on in other parts of the country:

"...nationwide, clerks in 13 counties are refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, including nine in Alabama, where the chief justice of the State Supreme Court is strongly opposed to same-sex marriage." (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/kentuck...y-same-sex-couples-could-learn-fate-thursday/)

The other thing I don't get, is why her god wouldn't just forgive Ms. Davis for her sin of issuing marriage licenses to gay couples?

I feel so badly for the couples she is refusing to issue licenses for. On her high horse, she is making them feel badly. I hope her high horse spooks and throws her hard to the ground. Where is the kindness and compassion?

One time, Years ago, When I worked in the ER, we had to take care of the shooter who received critical injuries being shot by police as well as the victims he shot, including children, two adults and a police officer. I did my job as did the whole trauma team on that shooter. I did not have the luxury of following my beliefs, opinions, thoughts, anger in that moment.

Neither does this woman. She needs to do her job or be fired. IMO

Very powerful statement.

Yes. And if she is fired her supporters will set up a go fund me account that will allow her to retire rich. Plus she will do speaking tours at churches around the nation and make money off that.

Oh yeah? So how many divorced people does she deny marriage license to? And has she separated from her husband and gone back with her first or remained single? If not, she's still committing adultery.

It's funny how neither gay marriage nor gay sex is written in the Ten Commandments. Adultery is though. Yet those who scream loudest against gay marriage are dead silent about adultery.

Make no mistake: this is about hate. Not God. There is nothing compassionate or loving or Christ like about Kim Davis or her angry, ugly demeanor. She is no different from the rage-filled, jeering segrgationists who denied goods and services and admission to black people during the 50's and 60's and that is precisely how history will remember this hypocrite.
