At around 22 to 23 weeks, the blood vessels "reach" the air sacs in the lungs so that air exchange in the lungs is possible (very, very simplified). Before that happens, no matter what gestational age or weight, there's no hope for survival. As it is, from what I could see Googling, the survival rate for a 24 week premie is about 41%, and 25 weeks is about 63%.
It's a terrible time for them, but they have what it takes to cope with whatever happens, strong family and faith. If Josie lives to meet her family, she'll have an envious set up I'll hope and pray that she does.
