The Most Hated Baby Names in America

I really don't think to much about names. I kinda think the more masculine name for girls are cute. Never really thought "man I hate that name" before.

My personal pet peeves (no offense to anyone!!) are the boy names that end with -ayden or -aden: Brayden, Hayden, Kayden, Jayden, etc.

And the girl names ending in -leigh: Hayleigh, Harleigh, Kaleigh, etc.

They're everywhere! All the kids in school will have rhyming names.

I grew up with a weird name, and was and am forever spelling it, repeating it, explaining where it came from, etc. Ugh.

So I gave my kids traditional names that were slightly underused at the time. Both have become more more popular, but that's great. I'm glad they know one or two other kids with the same names! Uniqueness is over-rated.

I beg people not to give their kids names with weird spellings. Such a pain in the butt, take it from me!

My mothers first name is spelled very oddly and her middle name which she goes by was made up by her older sister. The poor woman has had such trouble on legal docs even had to drive hours away to get her passport redone because of it. She would agree with you!

I never had a daughter, but always loved the name Augustus. Mom said she would disown me. LOL I think its pretty.

I always thought along the line of keeping it simple for the kid to spell it in first grade.
Named my kids Paul and Kim. Kept it simple. The personalities we have to work on later.

Yessssssssssss!! I taught pre-k for several years and working with a child who had a long name was so difficult. And it always seemed that the longer the child's name was, the less their parents worked with them at home on writing/spelling.

I tend to not like names when I've known people with the same name that I didn't care for too much. Then later down the road I'll meet someone with that name that I do like and it's hard for me to reconcile. Has that happened to anyone else?

I have an entire list of names of former students that are off-limits for when I have children because they left such a negative impact on me.

I'm not going to say which names I hate for fear of offending someone. Most of the current trends have 'trended' before, even centuries ago. I find it really interesting looking at my family tree and seeing what names were popular many generations ago.

My poor mother had a boy's name that she made certain my father knew was OFF the list-- it was the name of a boy that tormented her throughout her childhood. Well, her third child was a boy, and when she came out from under the anesthesia my father had already filled out the birth certificate-- yep, he named him THE name. Can you believe that?! Ugh.

Names are such a sensitive topic. Sigh. You'll notice I didn't list my kids' names, because my ob/gyn once slipped up when we were trying to come up with dd#2's name, and she said, "Oh man! That almost sounds as bad as [dd#1's] name!" Yikes! Glad the delivery was over at this point! FWIW, both girls are named after their grandmas...one had passed, and one was still with us. For us, it was an honor to give them those names.

My mom named me after a soap star whose character had been married 6 times.

Try going through life being named Dark Knight Leibowitz!!!! It's amazing I turned out as well as I did!

I was named after my dads receptionist. I dont know why mom went along with it but I do wonder about that.

I just hate when people name the babies after cars. Drives me nuts.

I guess they are! I had no idea.

I can understand kids hating their own names. I went to third grade with a Harriet. She was Corey by the time I saw her again in middle school.

But I can't honestly say I have strong feelings about the names of others.

i hate names that use "unique" spellings. I wouldn't want my kids to have to spend their whole lives correcting peoples spellings! I also don't like names that are "cutesy" sounding, like the parents don't expect the kid to ever grow up!

I don't have any kids, but I love love love the name Julia if I ever have a daughter.

Or NYC boroughs. Adding an extra "n" to "Brooklyn" does not a girl's name make.

I can't imagine taking roll in a classroom-- when I was a kid, they had enough trouble and we were Mikes, Marks, Jeffs, Larrys, Johns, Cathys, Lindas, Loris, Cheryls, and Susans. lol

...and Cindy.

OOOhh... I had a Dr. Leibowitz as a pediatrician when I was younger!
I don't think his name was Dark Knight though.

My great-grandmother and grandmother were both avid romance novel readers and they came up with some really great names. My grandmother's name is very unique and quite beautiful - Pina Geneva. She was named after the white pine forest she was born in. She was born in a logging camp in NW Washington. Under the stars - which is probably why she named my mother Nova  I have never heard of anyone else named Nova until that book was written about the girl that gave birth in WalMart. They turned it into a movie.

The only other Nova I have ever run into is our poster, Nova :)

I love names and about the only names I don't like are Gertrude (but I like Gertie) and Bertha (because of the Butt sisters LOL).

Salem

I have three sons and one daughter. Their names are all different in origin. Each name was chosen based on our current "feel" for the child.

I used to not like trendy names. However, I do like to look at time periods in the past and see a "trend." We forget that our McKenzies and Chandlers will be the Myrtles and Willies of the future.

I couldn't believe after three boy that I named my daughter a "boy" name. But it is SO her. We just changed the spelling....Ramsi.

BBM - LOVE that name!! We considered it but it sounded ridiculous with our last name.

Some names I associate with girls but really started out as boys names: (using the behindthename.com popularity chart)

Shannon - which started as a boys name in 1880, and began to be used as a girls in the mid 30s.
Meredith - male since 1880s, changed to girls in 1910s.
Loren - got girlie in the 60s.

Someone up there ^ was going on about 'Cameron' which got girlie in the late 70s.

My sister named her daughter Abigaile which is fine, but the e is only really needed on the end if it is spelt Abigayle. It bothers me so much.

Some names just shouldn't be carried on. A coworker just had a baby and named her after her mother, who is still living. This name is HORRID. Rule: If you want to name child after another but another has a horrible name = too bad, pick something else.

I know that is horrible but it's true. Disgusting names shouldn't procreate.
