On July 24, 1975, Kathy Beatty was beaten and sexually assaulted in the woods next to the Aspen Hill K-Mart in Silver Springs MD. She died on August 5 1975. Ten days later, Aug. 15, in Fairfax, her father got married. Kathy's mother, Patricia Haberman spent her lifetime continually fighting to solve this brutal "disorganized" crime.

Montgomery County Police have had this open, unsolved murder case on their cold case list for 49 years.

MCP has never named a suspect publicly, but have probably considered a number of potential persons.

A highly suspicious potential suspect is convicted murderer Fred Howard Coffey. Jr. He was employed at the time by the VITRO corporation, which had offices and parking lots immediately across the street from the K-Mart store area where Kathy was found.

The walking route she most likely took passed through, or adjacent to both VITRO parking lots early that evening.

This abduction and murder took place midway between two other crimes Coffey committed against young teen aged girls in the Norfolk, Virginia area. He was later convicted of molesting three children, and of murdering a 10 year old girl. He has been named by LE as the primary suspect in the murders of a 5 year old girl and an 8 year old boy.

When newspapers reported that Kathy was still alive and in hospital, Coffey immediately left town without notifying his VITRO employer. Only after subsequent newspaper accounts stated that Kathy died without regaining consciousness did Coffry resurface, asking VITRO to send him his last paycheck. He claimed that he left town suddenly because his wife and daughter had been involved in a serious accident in Kentucky - on outright lie.

According to Vinelink, 79 year old Fred Coffey's custody status is Greene Correctional Inst. Maury NC.

The offender capacity is listed as 616 offenders. Surprising to note this Facility is Male- Minimum Custody Reentry type. (The three phases of reentry is Facility, Transition, Community.) Also Neely Shane Smith is still an open case.- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department

Fred Howard Coffey, Jr. alias "Chick Coffey", alias "Bobby Davis"
DOB: 20 March 1945, current age 79
North Carolina Inmate Number: 0081135

Coffey is currently serving Life in prison for the murder of 10-year-old Amanda Ray. He has also been convicted of numerous other offenses against children, and is the primary suspect in the murders of 5-year-old Neely Smith and 8-year-old Travis Shane.

He was in the close vicinity of the murder of Kathy Lynn Beatty, and suspiciously left town when it was reported that she was alive and in hospital. Did he murder Kathy? Or was it all just a big coincidence?

Very sad case….. and equally sad it is coming up on 50 years unsolved. So unfortunate. And seems related evidence on the case is scant or limited?

From a quick read of this thread….. first impression is that it almost seems to have been something close, personal, and gone awry. Maybe younger teens that thought advances were being accepted until they were not.

Also seems as I think others posted here, that the likes of a serial killer would not have left the individual alive unless they were interrupted or needed to quickly leave the scene.

One positive thing if it were not the suspected serial killer, but rather perhaps an acquaintance or someone near the victims age…… that might lessen the age of the possible perpetrator(s).

As others also suggest here…. if some suspect(s) still in the ‘queue’…. investigators should continue to circle back to them, spouses, ex-spouses, and acquaintances. Circumstances change. KB and her family deserve justice. MOO
