The Navy relayed their information right away to an Incident Commander - not sure if this is Polar Prince.

"The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost," a senior U.S. Navy official told the Journal. "While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission."

I interpreted Incident Commander to be a Naval officer. Wouldn’t the person in charge of the mothership be the captain? I wish the articles would be clearer and not make us guess.

So why did oceangate wait 8 hours to report it?

I gave them the benefit of the doubt when I thought it was just the communication that was lost because that had happened many times previously. But come on, they knew its tracking, comms and electronics had failed and they STILL waited 8 hours to report it to the coast guard? WTF are they thinking?
No answer but good speculation in article

Why did it take 8 hours to report Titan’s disappearance to the Coast Guard?

I wasn’t aware of the Macy’s tidbit.

NEW YORK -- The wife of the man piloting the OceanGate tourist submersible when it imploded during this week's dive to the Titanic wreckage site is a descendant of a wealthy couple who died when the ocean liner sank in 1912.

Archival records show that Wendy Rush, the wife of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, is the great-great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Straus, The New York Times reported Thursday. Straus was a retailing magnate who co-owned Macy's department store.

For those onboard the Titan who were not experienced... is it possible they could have done their own personal research on OceanGate before making this trip? Did they speak to others about the risks involved? Did they simply trust Rushton? Just my opinion but I don't think we know. From what I've read Dawood was educated and traveled in good company in several countries. Harding was an experienced explorer.

Also, did the world-renowned Nargeolet think the vessel was too risky but blindly trusted his friend?

ETA: Did Rushton risk his own life just to make more money for his endeavors?

Just dropping in to say that I thought the Admiral was extremely patient, direct and honorable in his responses. There was no calling out of the explorers risky endeavor as such. I appreciated his candor and humility on behalf of the families.

Rest in Peace.
MOO
Agree, I have been very impressed by the spokespersons at the press conferences I have watched related to this tragedy, and admire greatly how well they have handled difficult questions that would be painful for the families to hear. Incredibly professional and dignified.

I thought the Navy heard the implosion first? They would have then reported it to OG?

JMO. It sounds to me as if this acoustic anomaly happened before anyone knew they were missing.

It could have happened, and I suspect it may have, during the descent.

The fact that the debris is on the ocean bed just means that it fell there, not necessarily that it happened there.

Time will tell, IF information can be gathered without risk to others.

Here is a good question for you.

They evidently decided to wait to see if the Titan would surface. So according to the timeline the Titan was suppose to surface at 3:00pm.

The question is -

Why did they wait until 5:40 before notifying the Coast Guard?

They waited about 2 1/2 hours from surface time. What on earth were they doing?

Staring at the water?

Azmeh Dawood — the older sister of Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood — told NBC News that her nephew, Suleman, informed a relative that he “wasn’t very up for it” and felt “terrified” about the trip to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.

But the 19-year-old ended up going aboard OceanGate’s 22-foot submersible because the trip fell over Father’s Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad, who was passionate about the lore of the Titanic, according to Azmeh.
That is sooo sad.

One expert at the news conference said the implosion happened in a ‘water column’, so that’s before reaching the ocean’s floor.

“What is a water column?

During the press conference, the Coast Guard and experts were asked where the debris field of the submersible was in relation to the Titanic. The debris field found was about 1,600 feet off the bow of the 1912 shipwreck in an area without any debris of the Titanic.

“It is consistent with the location of an implosion in the water column,” retired captain and Woods Hole Oceanographic Systems Laboratory Director Carl Hartsfield said during the conference.

But what exactly is a water column?

According to the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, the water column included all of the water in the ocean between the surface and the seafloor. In other words, the possible implosion could have happened at any point after submerging in the water but before reaching the ocean floor.”

Just watched director James Cameron on CNN talking about this tragedy. He is incredibly knowledgeable about submersibles, even has his own company. He didn't hold back regarding the cavalier attitude that the owner/designer/adventurer, Stockton Rush embodied who he thinks cut many corners in creating the submersibles for OceanGate. I think there are probably a lot of individuals involved in this type of technology probably who feel the same; that it could have been avoided. However he feels about the circumstances that caused this catastrophe he felt compassion for the loss of lives.

There is also a specialist on right now, who says there is no way to recover bodies since the bodies would have been annihilated, only minute particles of DNA would be left.

I can't imagine how the families on those on board feel trying to process all this technical information when referring to someone they love. Condolences to all. And brickbats to those disgusting individuals who are crowing about the deaths of the wealthy adventurers. Shame on them.
It is disgusting. Perhaps they think Christine Dawood feels less pain than they would just because she is rich? Perhaps they also think their comments cannot be seen or heard by the families?

Thank you to WS, Tricia, and the Mods for insisting on respectful discussions and kindness.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released the following statement regarding the Titan submersible:

“I offer my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the Titan’s passengers and crew during this incredibly difficult time. I commend the work and leadership of the United States Coast Guard on this extremely complex mission, and we are grateful to our interagency and international partners for their coordination in our search and rescue efforts.”
