A few things from presser.
-They believe they were breaking in places, stealing food, living off the land.
-BS will keep offending as long as he is free. He has a pattern of behavior that had been ongoing most of his life.
-They believe they were using Cedar Springs Rd. as a handrail. Traveling at around dusk and sticking to the edge of the woods.
-He wasn't an expert at living off the land, but was above average. He knew how to not get caught.
-H is back with her family.
-BS is in federal custody on the failure to register. He will be going before a federal court in Greeneville, TN.
-They had no plan. They were just trying not to get caught.

Great a happy ending to this hellish trek through the Virginia Hills. We know that social media apps were a tool used by an evil mind. We must stress at every chance we can that just because someone appears to be okay they may not be okay. Social media apps must come with a hinky meter. I wonder if before a teen could download an social media app that they must answer a survey or questionnaire that would spot if the young person was an especially vulnerable person?

UPDATE: Benjamin Shook has made his first appearance in Federal Court in Greeneville. Happened 1:37-1:46pm today.

Praying for you sweet girl and your family. I have a daughter too. She is 11. I am going to show her your story and explain to her about the dangers of the internet again. She doesn't go online much yet, but she is getting to the age that she will have more access to the internet.

H was taken to Smyth County Community Hospital to be checked out.

News 5 WCYB’s Kristi O’Connor has been speaking with H's family all day Tuesday. Her father said H is fine. She had been living off of apples and spring water for the past week and a half, and was apologetic and ready to come home.

O'Connor also spoke with the U.S. Marshal who will be questioning Shook later Tuesday. He said that right now, Shook is being detained on the charge of failure to register as a sex offender. He has an active warrant out of Georgia.

authorities said a 911 call came at about 5am Tuesday. The caller said they were at her home seeking refuge. Smyth County officers, who were members of the U.S. Marshal's Service's Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrived within minutes.

Shook’s arrest was without incident. He’s in federal custody for failure to register, and headed to the Federal Courthouse in Greeneville, Tennessee. State charges will follow any federal ones.

Police said the two had been walking about a mile at night, using Cedar Springs Road as a guide and not straying too far from it. They believe the two were living outside for the whole time.

It’s also believed the two had no real plan about what to do. Instead, the plan was only to not get caught.

I just heard! Fantastic news! I know there will be a long, tough road ahead for H but she is alive! I pray her future is bright! As for shook, may justice be swift and severe!
 
What a genuine piece of garbage this Shook is. I hope HW comes to understand eventually that he exploited her. I doubt she feels that way right now but hopefully in time, with help, she will. I'm SO glad they found them and she got away from him. My hat is off to the woman house-sitting for friends. May HER tribe, increase!!
 
I just go finished reading a piece from Jeff Bobo Times News out of Kingsport. H had her first hot meal in 16 days. The article states that she was bored and had no idea he was a SO. H will also face some criminal charges but authorities says that is to insure that she receives proper counseling. H is grounded for the foreseeable future. All of her electronic gadgets are in the hands of LE. She is also band from internet use. TG she is alive and there appears to be no physical scars what psychological scars that are left only time will tell

Well, it's about time !!

Question: Do scent tracking dogs lose their ability in the state of Virginia ?

This case makes me question whether those abilities are genuine or just urban myths. It may turn out these dogs are just really expensive pets for LE to carry around in their K9 SUV's.

HW is back home after two weeks of running from police with convicted sex offender BS. She spoke to us about her time away and the events leading up to her homecoming.

HW had been on the run with 41-year-old sex offender BS, a plan that was months in the making.

HW said, "I knew we were going to be [in the woods], I just didn't know what state."

-She wasn't scared while she was with him because she didn't think he would hurt her.

Not my call, but I completely disagree with any child in a situation like this being interviewed by the media...in any form..so soon after her recovery.

And...the house sitter rocks..a lot of people would be fearful of getting involved.

i am sorry that H went through this trauma. But I think this clearly shows the impulsiveness of teens. Doing something exciting and different with someone else was appealing. I think she took a lot of things for granted. I think all of us at one time or another as a child or teen may have felt that our parents were suffocating us but in reality they are there to protect us. Food, water, shelter, clothing and the other nice things require planing and money. She had plans that were immediate in nature nothing in the long run. When all the true realities of life finally dawn on her it was a real shocker. As for BS general population and final permanent residency in a federal prison I pray will be his legacy. That special prison in Colorado, they call SuperMax is a fitting destination for him.
