Is the cruise line just now paying the money from the suit that was filed in June or July? I thought that had been settled and was over and done with.

I don't have a problem with Jennifer getting the money and 25% of it going into some fund. I have a problem with her having all of the info from the investigation and signing a paper stating that she would not allow George's parents to see the paperwork. No matter how she may feel about his parents or them about her this whole thing is about George and what happened to him. His parents deserve to know what LE and the FBI, etc knew. I think it is just cruel not to let them read the paperwork. Why would she even agree to such a thing? I would think she is hiding something too if I were the Smiths.
From the beginning she has refused to answer their questions. That is just bizarre to me. If I were the Smiths I would wonder just what kind of a person it is that my son married. Maybe they never really knew her after all and maybe George didn't really know her either.
His family was clearly upset on IE. They were saying this shows what kind of person she is. I hear that she gets 1 million and she is starting a fund in his name with 50,000. She also says she plans on giving his parents "some" money. If I heard correctly the deal is she gets the money and the paperwork of the investigation, the only people she can give it to is the FBI. So we will see if she turns it over to them :waitasec: , I would let them take it from there. I mean if this was my DH I would be trying to get anyones help and I would NOT shut up. I think this story is very fishy. JMO I have always thought that. :twocents:

I agree that she is hiding something--did she ever take a lie-detector test?
I dont know peter but it would be nice to see the results.

I personally did not like the girl from the interviews that I saw. I thought that something was not right when I watched her on the Oprah show. Something went on that night and perhaps the entire trip. I guess that we will never know the truth.

Something went on that night and perhaps the entire trip

Strangest honeymoon that I have ever read about. So much drinking, hard partying, and sleeping in other people's rooms during your honeymoon sure makes it sound like something wasn't quite right and was going on the entire trip.

I didn't like her either. I know it's terrible to judge, but I thought she was just out for his money. :(

If the appeal is accepted, not only will it overturn the settlement, it will remove Hagel Smith as administrator of Smith's estate

This should be interesting.

One of the shows on TruTV just did an episode on this. The parents are obviously not very happy with the bride and her actions. I can't blame them - the way she has acted seems very selfish. I know on my honeymoon I want to be with my new husband and only him, not partying all night with a bunch of guys I don't know. It just seems weird.

Sealed records to be released in missing Greenwich honeymooner's case

Nearly 2,200 pages of sealed court transcripts, documents and photos in the case of George A. Smith IV, a Greenwich man who vanished while on a honeymoon cruise in 2005, are set to be released to the public within 30 days, officials said.

Greenwich Probate Court Judge David Hopper ruled Tuesday he will release the records of probate court proceedings after the U.S. Department of Justice, which has investigated the case, can review the proposed redactions and suggest its own.

This case has always fascinated me. I do agree foul play was involved but I keep waffling back and forth between believing Jennifer was directly involved and that she wasn't directly a cause of his death but is embarrassed by her actions and behavior on the trip and just wants the whole thing to go away.

Does anyone know any more about her personal life now? Is she in another relationship yet?

I haven't seen anything about her personally, as far as any new relationships or such. This article does talk about what she does for a living and where she's living.

I honestly believe this was an accident. I know the parents don't want to believe that, but from all indications it was accidental. I think Jennifer wanted the case settled ASAP to prevent any further talk of her and George's bad behavior on their honeymoon cruise. They were drinking WAYYYY TOO MUCH and ultimately, that's what caused George's demise, imo.

Jennifer has worked towards cruise-line reform regarding protocol, emergency response etc. She's trying to do something positive.

I feel for George's family but I also believe they'll never be satisfied with any answer they get. The fact is, George is gone forever and they want to blame someone.

I don't fault them for wanting to know the whole truth, but I still believe they won't be happy with anything they'll find out. They most likely will believe what they discover is incomplete and someone is hiding something.

Like in any case such as this, there are no winners. The loved one is gone forever and lives have changed. A tragedy all around. :(

Fran, thanks for that link. I do agree with you that there are no winners no matter what.

And for the Smiths it must be so difficult to have been celebrating your son's wedding and basking in all that happiness as he and his new bride head off on their honeymoon and then the next minute you are getting a phone call that your son is dead. I can't even begin to imagine what that must have been like.

The problem I have with the accident scenario is if George fell from the balcony above, hit the landing below and ultimately went overboard the blood would not have been pooled the way it did - would it? That was a big blood stain. I would suspect if he fell and hit his head there would be blood splatter but not a pool of blood consistent with someone lying there for an amount of time.

Really I think all the scenarios of what happened to George Smith seem unlikely. It is hard to believe he fell overboard, it is hard to believe some people he just met killed him and it is hard to believe his wife had anything to do with it. Obviously one of those things happened. It is just so bizarre for someone to just disappear off a cruise ship on their honeymoon.

Gaia, I do think you have a really good point there. I don't imagine that the blood would have pooled the way it did if it was an accident.

It is totally bizarre. But we all know from researching cases here.....much stranger and more sinister things have happened.

This is just one of those cases that for some reason has always stuck with me because I have the gut feeling it wasn't an accident. I just think there is so much more there.

Thanks, VB. I read about this earlier this morning and forgot about it till you just posted that. Wonder what her husband to be thinks happened to George?

Feds' Mafia team join probe into disappearance of Conn. newlywed

New York-based FBI agents assigned to the Russian organized-crime task force have joined the federal probe into the disappearance of a young Connecticut newlywed on his honeymoon cruise in 2005, his family’s lawyer told The Post yesterday.

And the family of George Smith IV now believes he fell victim to “foul play” after he was escorted, drunk, to his cabin from the ship’s disco by a group that included a California college student and three young Russian-Americans with Brooklyn ties.

“The family believes it was a robbery-gone-bad,” said Michael Jones, the lawyer for the Smith family of Greenwich, who have now abandoned their initial suspicions that his bride, Jennifer Hagel, might have played a role in the 26-year-old groom’s demise.

very interesting dateline tonight for those who followed this case...

the smith's attorney has obtained 6000+ pages of records from royal caribbean and new evidence is emerging... especially re: a man named josh and "four russians".

jennifer still refuses to say where she went after the disco... odd.

the large blood stain? i see the outline of a man splayed w/ limbs in all directions and it honestly looks like blood pooled at his neck if this is correct. was his throat sliced open? that would account for the tremendous amount of blood there... like with nicole simpson.
