IMO we are looking at two completely different things. The pings prosecutors used are regular "handshakes " between the phones and the towers. Our phone pings when we send or receive messages, initiate or receive a phone call and even when our phones are not in use but are powered on. This insures that we always have a coverage and a tower to go to when we receive or initiate a call or message.

This witness is talking about another sort of record, which contains the routing of data. To data traffic one needs towers who can send and receive data. Which is why he conveniently "forgot" to add the rest of the 4G towers to his map which are towers with the real "handshakes".

I hope the state can clarify this.

That makes way more sense than what we're hearing. And it sounds like the defense is trying to be a bit deceptive, and mislead the court and jury by mixing one set of data with another. Thanks.

I wonder if analyzing the ping from EA's neighborhood around 5:30 AM that they are using to show he was home would also cause people to doubt where he was. I just find it interesting that they are focusing on these specific pings near the Shops to show "he wasn't there," but they are not questioning any other data pings (like all the data that correctly show them at work, driving to Plano, at the bars, etc.). To me, as long as the ping "session ID" starts in Plano, that's what matters. All the routing and switching afterwards is immaterial.

I'm not sure what to take from this because obviously there is 'some' geography tracking involved. Perhaps there are 'outlier' pings that cant be trusted. For instance, earlier in the trial there was testimony that EA's phone pinged Coit/Spring Creek at 3:57 and the video of EA leaving garage was 3:58 (those times could be transposed, sorry), there are towers much closer to the SAL garage that should have been the pinging tower if geography was reliable. Defense would argue that maybe this would explain the Anna ping or even the Granite Park pings.
