I don't think the Couches are as wealthy as they have been painted. They are comfortable, but rich? I guess that is relative, so relatively speaking, in North Texas terms, they don't appear to be so rich that they can buy off LE and judges.

These are nice homes, of course. But compared to Dallas area "wealthy," they are dated, not located in prestigious areas, and not particularly impressive. For someone who thinks they are really impressive, it's not really congruent with reality.

No, those are not "wealthy" homes, but somehow they have enough money to keep throwing it at lawyers. At the rate they're going, I just wonder how long the money will hold out? Surely the money can't last forever & they'll have to live in the real world along with the most of us ordinary folks. I can't even begin to imagine how much they have already spent on attorney fees.

I agree. They aren't rich like the oil barons or others with that kind of money. They're comfortable, but it's not like they have a private jet or other really high end things.

Interesting. Since when is 343K a half million? Again, media fluffing up this story.

Score another for the Couch family! They apparently are Teflon!!!!!!!!!!

They have enough money to retain an international team of the best lawyers that money can buy. Thats all that matters.

Currently a $350K home in the DFW real estate market is an average priced home.

Burleson is south of Ft Worth. You can get a nice house with some acreage for that price because it's not a desirable location - until the last 5-10 years there were cattle on that land. It was 'country'. The father has a blue-collar company and to people who have come up the hard way, he's successful, mid-upper middle class. I would imagine neither he nor his wife have unlimited, or even great amounts, of cash. He has paid out who-knows-how-much to settle lawsuits from the crash and Ethan's legal fees. She's a spendthrift. The house Ethan was living in had no furniture! They gave the appearance of having wealth, but I'd bet funds are getting low. Keep in mind that the lawyers representing them have an agenda too - to latch onto a notorious case for the publicity.
I work in the homebuilding industry and I've lived in the DFW metro for 40+ years. There is a saying here that applies to the Couches, all hat, no cattle.

Reading comprehension.

This is the house Tonya sold on August 10 at 1719 Retta Road in Burleson: a six acre, 3964 square foot estate in a “park-like” setting. It was not $343,000 (but that was the last tax value). Originally listed for $549,000 on 11/23/2014, the home went under contract last May and sold in August for $480,000. Fred and Tonya Couch bought the home back in 2000. And this is where their son apparently partied, complete with red Feng Sui door.

Half is defined as one of two equal or nearly equal parts. I think 480K is a nearly equal part of 1 million.

They are certainly well off. They might not be among the richest people in the country, but it's rather obvious they are richer than vast majority of people in US. Or at least were before all the lawsuits. Their baby boy cost them a pretty penny.

The big wigs always have off shore bank accounts. Now the feds thought it was possible at first that a rental private jet could assist the kid at first. So the feds knew that the family definitely has some change in their accounts.

So imo. These folks are worth more. I would love to see the money maneuvers that were done directly after the crash. Jmo.

Imagine, starting out the new year in jail.

Not just in the USA, but in Mexico as well.

Looking at spending boat loads of money on attorneys.

Facing unknown future jail time.

Losing your freedom and control.

Constant worry about your child and worry for one owns safety.

Uggh and double Uggh. What a way to start 2016.

Plus, for me, losing my dog would be up there on the stress test.

Guess, they're getting a triple dose of Karma.

Well at least the dad doesn't have to help since the kid is of age now.

But let's ponder for a second. The lawyer and doctors said that he has affluenza. Now the judge felt okay to give him leniency while getting bashed.

Now he runs. So he has just violated his probation conditions . So hopefully the next judge will not be duped and force him to serve the remaining years in prison. Along with the sentencing for running from the law.

Fingers crossed.

Mom is in no place to hire an attorney like this, so either Daddy Couch hired him, or this attorney offered his services and Ethan and or Daddy agreed. Imo

Agree. But since Mexico jails are notorious for the unknown. Maybe dad just wanted to get him the best for now to make sure that his son doesn't get killed or extorted in a Mexican jail. Idk.

I think the Mexican lawyer team is more for protection without having to go to the consulate. Jmo for now.

These people have been living like this for the last 25 years, in and out of jail. So it’s nothing new for them.

In my opinion, the Couch's wealth is being embellished by MSM. These were middle- to upper-middle class. They probably flashed their money with big shiny purchases more than a family who is more "old money", so they possibly appear to be more affluent than a family with 5X their wealth.

JMO from growing up the "poor"(not even close) kid around the "real old money" kids. ;)

Is it possible that Mom wanted to high-tail it out of Mexico so she did not get charged with bringing the gun into Mexico? At the point she was deported, the gun issue was not the main focus IIRC.

Perhaps the attorneys for Ethan and Tonya advised them it would be easier to get Ethan out of the charge than Tonya, an adult.
