She was sick long before she had children.

Not true. Her medical records appear to show that she did not have any signs of mental illness before her children were born. I'm not smart enough about the illness to know whether its something she always had that may have been "dormant," or if she developed it due to the hormonal changes of multiple pregnancies. However, by all appearances, and her medical records, she was indeed "normal" in the years before her children were born and for the first few years of her older childrens' lives.

No JDP...she DID have some problems before she married. It was along the lines of minor depression going into pub. Her mother did a show after all this happened. However, it was NOTHING major. Don't have a link, just watched the show. It was a long time ago. Her mother was so heartbroken. She cried almost the whole interview. :(

EDITED OUT RESPONSE TO PERSONAL ATTACK

I happen to be happy for the guy. I'll leave it at that.

I do have a question for those who think that Rusty caused the deaths of his children. Do you blame Andrea equally or are you blaming it completely on him and letting Andrea slide because it was all his fault that she had all the kids to begin with?

This was a very sad case.
I believe he should have followed the doctor's orders when he was told not to have any more children with Andrea.

I hope he doesn't make this one live in a bus like he did Andrea and all of the kids.

I put more blame on him than on Andrea - I can't say I blame her because she was insane - she was not in control. Before she was insane, she tried to get help, and those around her failed, ignored her pleas for help. Rusty, who continually took steps he knew would make her worse, and the incompetent doctor who took her off her meds in a way that was medically incorrect, are responsible, because they were sane, and they knew she was not sane.

Responsible to the point of murder charges - no. Responsible to the point of child endangerment charges (same as you'd get for leaving your children knowingly in the care of a pedophile) - YES!

Right on!!!!

I think the posts of the original tez (#299) and Details (#313) really explained things well. I agree with them. Andrea Yates was definitely not thinking rightly and her husband was certainly not a big help, but a definite hindrance to her mental health. I don't wish him evil, but I sure can't bring myself to wish him well either.

My post above was written from the perspective of someone who has a family member with (at least) bipolar disease. Most people would see him as a bratty, out-of-control boy, but we see him as someone who has been unsuccessful in being stabilized on medications and we continue to hope, pray, and search for the right treatment for him. Any and all good thoughts/prayers gratefully accepted.

Yates Remarries Before Ex-Wife's Retrial

By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press Writer
19 minutes ago

HOUSTON - Rusty Yates remarried Saturday in the church where the funeral for his five children was held and less than two days before his ex-wife's murder retrial was to begin.
Yates married Laura Arnold, 41, during a private ceremony attended by 100 people at Clear Lake Church of Christ, where they met.

The church minister said Yates chose to move on with his life while resisting temptation to pity himself or seek revenge on people who may have wronged him.

"It is easy to judge the actions of another, as though we know all the intricate details of their life story. Jesus has warned us against such judgments," Rev. Byron Fike said in his prepared statement. He took no questions.

People wronged him? And then the pastor brings in Jesus to defend him. Sorry, Rusty Yates doesn't command that much attention from Jesus on earth. Now, that could be a totally different story when Rusty is at the pearly gates.

I couldn't believe that he still belongs to the same church that messed up Andrea's head. Or whose teachings certainly didn't help her. Maybe wife #2 will fair a little better.

Goody, it's not the same church that Andrea was involved in.

A little more detail about Rusty's wedding yesterday.

Moving on includes becoming a groom

Yates case revisits rigid insanity test

Defense lawyers decry the standard still used in Texas

Snip:

Between 2001 and 2004, four Texas women became famous — notorious, actually — for the deaths they inflicted on their children. Two opted for drowning, one grabbed a knife and the other used a heavy rock.

But their choice of method was less significant than the method in their madness. All were convinced they were doing right by their children, according to their attorneys. So intense was their disturbed mental state that it was capable of overpowering the strongest, most basic human instinct. (long article, more at link)

Rusty Yates' actions puzzle acquaintance

He wonders why Andrea Yates' ex-husband didn't persist in getting her medical help

Short Snip from a very long article:

'She was very scary'

Thirteen days before she systematically drowned her children, Bob Holmes saw the Yates family in the grocery store. The woman he had known for years as a "24/7" mom was alone with a cart. Her children, who had always gathered around her, grouped around their father.

"She looked like a paranoid animal," Holmes recalled. "A dangerous animal. If you see a dog in the corner, with that kind of look, do you care what's going on in his head? She was very scary during that period."

His wife, Debbie, visited the Yates home six days before the children were killed. She saw the same blank look.

Testimony from Andrea Yates' capital murder trial revealed that she walked in circles and failed to eat or feed the children in the weeks before their deaths. Other adults — her mother and her mother-in-law — took turns staying with her.

Holmes said the hardest thing to understand is why Yates did not intervene at that point. "Put himself between the children and her. He could've always had Andrea committed. I will say that until the day I die."

He wore sunglasses to his wedding. Pretty damned appropriate. He must have been wearing them all throughout his marriage to Andrea to have not seen how sick she was!
