Deputies say he admitted to killing the teen he only knew by the name of "Cheryl" that he picked up in Durham in 1981.
He led them to her body in October of that year in Iola, Texas.

Vital Statistics:
Age: 17, would have been 20 in 1976 (assuming PMI ~5 years)
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 140lbs
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Sheryl on Doe Network
Sheryl on Namus (#MP3259)

She's a match height wise and possibly age wise, but not hair (auburn vs brown) and weight (110 vs 140) for this Doe.

Auburn can come in a red-brown color. Maybe she became transient and lost 30 pounds between 1973 and 1976. The weight for Jane Doe is probably just an estimate anyway.

Things that match up or are close (UID could have been named Cheryl according to NamUs)
Cheryl was 12 when she went missing - UID was to be between 13-19
Both are said to have Red/Auburn hair
Cheryl went missing in 1978 - UID was said have been there for up to 5 years (1976-1981)

Height and weight are off but the UID was skeletal remains so I have seen them off plenty of times.

Thanks - this used to be my specialty before all the matches were made by genealogy DNA. (which I am glad that so many UID's are getting their names back. So many of my "pet cases" have been solved over the last 3 years that I would never think would be solved. A lot of them were never reported missing. :(

She was only 4'0- that's tiny. But maybe Sheryl was transient for some time and had a growth spurt.

I am not buying she was only 4'0. Sorry. I think it could be a misprint. I have been doing this for a long time an have seen misprints and reporting of heights wrong many times, so I am taking someone saying a 12 years old being 4 foot tall with a grain of salt.
