On the anniversary of the tragic event, FOX reported that the Caldwell County District Attorney and the Senior Counsel for the Texas Attorney General's Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit will meet to discuss the case next month.

Investigators are still accepting any information that could lead to locating Landry. If you have any information that could be of use, contact Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeff Ferry at (512) 398-6777 ext. 4504 or Jeff.Ferry@co.caldwell.tx.us.

___________

Perhaps Jason's family should push for the FBI to get involved with this suspicious missing person case.

In another suspicious, student death investigation, also with no evidence of foul play, the FBI just announced up to a $10K reward for public cooperation and leads from Jelani Day's contacts on his case. I trust Jason's case and family are worthy of this same opportunity. MOO

The reward announced Monday is part of a nationwide, coordinated, multi-platform social media campaign from the Jelani Day Joint Task Force (JDJTF). The goal is to help identify new leads in the Day investigation. This comes in addition to the forensic, analytical, and technological investigative techniques already utilized.

FBI offers award up to $10,000 for information regarding death of Jelani Day

Actually, I recall Jason's mother stating the temps were cold the evening he crashed/disappeared and reports indicate the temps did drop to the mid 30's F.

His mother said she’s worried about her son because temperatures are getting so cold at night right now in the region.

Indeed, it was in the immediate aftermath of the freeze and power going out in Texas.
……

While I have no doubt that it was cold that night a year ago, just a correction that the great freeze and power outage in Texas happened 2 months LATER, in February 2021.

I stand corrected. I don't know why I thought there was snow on the ground when Jason disappeared.

It was unusually cold for Texas, though.

One year gone: A timeline leading up to the anniversary of the disappearance of Jason Landry

I wanted to note from the linked article:

Kent spoke with podcast host Tyler Feller to give an update on the case nearly a year later. In addition to sharing his heartache over fear of his youngest son’s safety, Kent shared a few new details.

According to Kent, only one photo was taken of the wrecked car that evening and it was found on Landry’s phone.
So that was Kent's phone correct. It wasn't Jason's phone otherwise that would indicate that Jason had presence of mind when he took the photo of the crash site. I will look at this video later but are you referring to father's phone or Jason's?

That's an error in reporting. I watched the video and what Jason's dad actually said is it was a volunteer firefighter who came upon the scene and he took a photo of the car. The police did not even bother to, so that's the only photo of the car at the scene.

I've cued up the video at the right part (starts around 9:58):

I'm having a hard time with this since I understood that it was believed his phone was lost until Kent found it wedged between the seat and console. It doesn't follow that Jason would get out of the vehicle, take a photo of his wreckage, wedge the phone in the car, while taking all other items with him??

Thank you @jash for seeking out the YT. The idea of Jason taking a photo of his crash bothered me all evening!

They did a massive search in October and not being far from Luling either and having been passing through the area after taking family to the airport; I decided to check out Salt Flat Road for myself. When I pulled off to gather some information on the case, I learned that the search was going to be that very morning. The search then seemed to be really official and solely search and rescue volunteers. I’m not so sure that the general public could’ve helped then. Plus while being out there, I took a look at the brush and I’m convinced he succumbed to the elements and we’ve just yet to find him in the brush.

I understand the invasion of privacy. I really do get it. But BB is watching no matter how much tin foil someone wears. Letting them ping a perimeter around the area he went missing wont change anything. They are only looking for information related to Jason and his disappearance. Only LE will see the information as well or those involved in the investigation. No one is being put on blast for being in the area bc they are having an affair or they were picking mushrooms for a fun trip. Whatever it is...there is a young man missing. For a year. Let's get this guy home to his family. Are they even asking people in the area if they are ok with it or are they just flat out refusing to do the geofencing?

I think they can't do it for the same reason they can't go into everyone's house in Luling looking to see if he is in their basement. It's an invasion of privacy and is only allowed if there is evidence of a crime. Violation of the fourth amendment of the constitution.

I understand the concerns about invasion of privacy also, but I don't understand how a geofence identifying those driving through the area is more an invasion of privacy than, say, if someone along there had a ring camera that captured license plates. Or even if there were publicly owned cameras, as the one Jason had gone through minutes before failing to make the right hand turn. I don't know how Geofencing getting identities of cars passing through the area is more invasive than what they already have in so many places, but just not down that quiet dirt road. The principle is the same. If you're driving on the road, expect your identity to be knowable.

THANK YOU!! They aren’t asking for everyone’s social. It’s simple. You were either in that area at that time of night or you weren’t. They don’t care about the other ish. They are trying to find someone’s family member. If you have things to hide…well sucks for you but no one cares.

Not the same thing but again..I get it. People are paranoid for reasons only they can explain. This isn’t about them though. If it was their family member that was missing would they be all “MY RIGHTS”?

While none of us here, unfortunately, nor any of Jason's family knows what happened that fateful evening in Luling, I do not think feral hogs are to blame.

Yes, indeed, feral hogs are savages with a keen sense of smell but a feral pig didn't take Jason's hat and lay it in that road nor any of his other belongings that were found hundreds of feet further south on Salt Flat Road.

As a mother, I would be crushed, possibly beyond repair, if this occurred to my child and because no one can prove an actual crime was committed then the geofence warrant cannot be pursued. That's harsh reality. It's cruel. I believe it's unfair.

Do what needs to be done. If it doesn’t pan out then that is unfortunate but at least you can rule that out. Let’s do everything we can to find Jason and bring him home. Jason’s life is in danger or he is possibly dead. Eff peoples privacy. Find him!!!

That is something that has to be decided by the courts. Disclaimer - I am not a lawyer and this info might be really old, as well. But the courts have made a distinction between LE physically following/trailing a suspect (allowed) and putting a bug on their car (not allowed).

Congress has decided the power of warrant-less searches is granted only for foreign intelligence related operations (tracking terrorists and major criminals), which again, has a process set out in another court (FISA).

Can't they just get judge's signature all hush hush, they don't have to share that detail with a soul. If they know it wont be admissible I am sure they can find something else that is - if there is some proof of ppl in the area with Jason....those anonymous tip lines can really get things going wink wink nod nod

UGH-- a year later and still no Jason.
Just popping in for updates.

I think they need to do everything possible to locate him, regardless.

If it were my child out there, missing, I could give a crap about illicit people hiding something they shouldn't be doing..I dont care...I just want my child found. !!!! And I would be pressuring LE and SAR to do that.

I get there are legal aspects, etc..but I would still be pressuring them to do everything possible.

JMO

Let's suppose a geofence warrant is issued and LE finds some previously unknown person who was there, maybe driving down the road and had stopped along it that night. Let's suppose it was you. Maybe you changed a flat tire and left moments before Jason came along. LE gets a warrant, seizes your car, searches your house, finds your son's drug stash, and hauls your whole family off to jail. So much for your civil liberties.

I'm all for finding Jason but I also respect people's reasonable rights to privacy. Tele-communications metadata has become a gray area. The current legal standard is there has to be evidence of a crime to request it. Sometimes not knowing what happened to someone like Jason may be the price paid for living in a free society and not in a police state. MOO
